The only survivor of the ill-fated ISA mission is now stranded on Mars. Having been designated a bio-hazard by Earth, any hope of returning home is all but gone. She is alone, isolated, and abandoned. That is, until another human shows up in the main colony airlock. However, he's barely alive and soon dies without regaining consciousness. More disturbing though, a DNA test identifies him as a colonist who has already died, several years earlier impossible as that may be. Nevertheless, there is only one place he could have come from, the mine on the far side of the Jezero crater Colony Two. An outpost they had presumed was long dead. But if he survived, maybe there are others still alive She now has no choice but to attempt the dangerous journey across the crater to investigate. Because if she doesn’t find some answers soon, her only future is to die alone on Mars

I've been horrified since book one being that I had already noticed a book 2 available and understood the possible implications but 1hr and 20 minutes into this book has me so horrified I'm not sure my curiosity will continue to win out to keep me listening to what I consider my worst nightmare scenario so far. I am a scientifically curious person by nature and a huge self learner of science and many other topics and I don't doubt for a second there are those who would and possibly could do something like this if given the chance. The so called Alpha's are monsters going against the nature of individualism and desire for free choice. They are worse than Communism or Kings. Like all Tyrants they do not want the experimental clones with the ability to also give birth because they are afraid of the newer human race being better than them and usurping their rule over the place and turning them into the Beta's, part of them knows it. They have a chance to start a society of mutual respect, gratitude, and peace but this is what they do.

I found these a week ago and have taken to using them as my current go to sleep books a week each should see me past xmas.
not because they are boring but because the narrator hits the spot to settle my ptsd addled brain down and allows me to focus on the plot for an hour as my cortexes disconnect from each other without too much confusion. so thank you in a good way.
they are also short enough that they don't leave me confused when I wake up 6 hours on.
a good plot well narrated which is rare with a female narrator as they usually can't do a male voice - sorry ladies but its true. nicol managed enough inflexion to make it work. great voice for late night radio in antonio bay.

Ugh, why did it take Jen so horribly wrong to figure out Boateng was a clone She's a Dr. of biology, for god's sake! The clone theory was the first thing that came to my mind right after they found out that Boateng should be dead.
Also, how are 35km enough to kill somebody of dehydration That's a distance you can walk in a day on Earth. Sure, on Mars you'd be hampered by an EVA suit, but you also have 1/3 of the gravity, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Unless, of course, you have already been dehydrated when you started your walk.

The problem with bioreactors is that cells cannot grab resources unless the molecules are right next to them. Oxygen and nutrients are often mixed with the waste products by cells and the hardest part with bioreactors is to separate the waste from the nutrients so the cells grow at maximum speed. Scaling up is impossible like a cake, the bigger the volume, the harder it is for the center of the mass to get what is needed. A cake becomes uncooked while the cells at the center stop growing or start starving to death.

Great story and concept. Thank you for a highly entertaining listen. I am eager to begin listening to Colony Three.
While Colony 2 did answer lingering questions from the first book, (which was satisfying) on the whole, and with all due respect, I thought C2 could be a bit predictable at times, and was somewhat repetitive to the events from Colony One.
Nevertheless the saga continues!

Just stopping long enough to say I love the way you write. Such an awesome flowing style that gives me all the description I need to visualize everything in my head while keeping a fast pace that keeps me glued. Such a joy to read. You've had me on the edge of my seat so many times and I love it! Also Jan is quite the badass. Love her character.

I never liked sci-fi. until now! Purely by accident I stumbled on this series, man I'm so glad I did! I finished colony one and colony two. Loving the story line and characters I am very excited to know the story continues. Well written and the best narrative you could have picked. Excellent! Thank you! Best fan ever. Salute

I enjoyed this much more than the first book. I will refrain from further criticism. The story, the writing and the characters are evolving. I heartily applaud your putting this on line for free and feel it is probably churlish of me to say anything more than, Thank you. I look forward to the next episode.

While the plot and narrative was entertaining the many factual science etc errors were a nuisance.
For one thing ICE engines require oxygen while Mars has only a very thin atmosphere of CO2 and some nitrogen. perhaps change the vehicles to electric with fuel cells

1: 00: 00 the doctor running Colony2 and what he's done is creeping me out immensely. Right now I'm so creeped out I'd rather be alone in Colony1 with the robot. How can so many comments be here without a discussion of the content of these books.

To both Gerald and Nicol: I started listening to One to help fall asleep, but it kept me so engrossed that I listened to it all! So, here’s to another sleepless night, diving into Two! Thank you for making this available on YT. Great work!

anyone else get annoyed when he called aries the greek god of mars didn’t do much research on that at all. aries is the greek god of war and mars is the roman interpretation of him, and they named the planet after him

Well conceived and thoroughly enjoyable books. I’ve enjoyed these well developed novels. This series should be made into a series of movies. They would be as good(as long as Hollywood follows the books closely)
reply

The concept of humans as a potential biohazard is relevant post-2019; either extraordinarily prescient or a SciFi author reacting to real world reality. In either case, the imagination of the author triumphs.

Finally I find an error there is no internal heat on Mars. That huge volcano is believed to have blown out its inner core millions if not billions of years ago. So no thermal energy source is possible

This is a great story.
Colony 2 is a perfect example of how planned economic systems always lead to oppression discontent and tyrannical authorities.
Just like Earth today.

I just finished Colony One. OMG, it’s amazing! I am going read all the Colony books!
One question - have you been asked to create a movie yet I think it would be just amazing.

Used to be a prodigious reader but now partially blind in one eye so it’s tiring. I greatly appreciate this series. Up there with Asimov (IMHO) with better character development. Thanks

(Hasn't Jan ever heard about Dolly the sheep, and the Italian and Asian human coining efforts/claims I bet Paolio would know (I'm remembering his name wrong, sorry, Paolio, RIP) )

I hope Gizmo is gonna keep an eye on Keidan and not make the same mistake as with Annes. When someone acts suspicious, you don’t let them just run around without supervision.

Seriously, this woman sabotaged the vehicle and then brought them the part they needed and didn't even bother to bring a grenade or rail gun with her. Give me a break.

Loved these books, they just keep getting better can't wait to listen to book 3. The author has done a brilliant job and the narrator was great aswell. thanks

The first 3 minutes with the spearfishing statistics made me laugh. She was mad she got 1 fish, when her record is 2 well ok then.

Thank you Mr Kilby, brilliant stories.
Nicole is a fabulous narrator.
Am I the only 1 who's favourite character is Gizmo

reply

At the risk of sounding 'Ist' not usually keen on lady narrators but will make a note of this ones name very good

Thank you sir for this opportunity to stretch our minds and imagination
So thankful to your generosity!

Really excellent, series. The plot, the characters and narration are all exceptional.
Exciting and engaging.

Actually, I'd have opted to remain on Mars - in the scenario presented - but for totally different reasons.

Many thanks, I have the books, but it's great to hear them whilst I am walking the dog.
