Since not everything is explained I'll make up my own backstory:
each galaxy has a being that is like the soul or the life of its galaxy. There's Andromeda and Milky Way. An ancient civilization that lived both on Mars and the Earth discovered how to get energy out of that being, so they captured and used Milky Way, but something went wrong killing her and causing a big disaster. That's where the Atlantis legend comes from. While that happened on Earth, the Mars side of the advanced civilization used faster than light travel or teleporting technology or whatever to go to the Andromeda galaxy and capture its life being, brought her to Mars, turned her into a cyborg and tried to control her for energy or whatever. She became full of anger and destroyed Mars as revenge.
The few survivors on Earth started civilization from scrath.

Just a tip, Egyptian cuneiform is not an afro -asiatic language. Not much crossover between them. Next time try afro - arabic trade tongues. Not that accurate either, but it'll get you past the Proctors. No actual crossover exists between cuneiform character and Chinese characters (logograms) most chinese characters are phono - semantic compounds with a small number of pictographic or ideographic origin characters.

Hm, I'm not a fan of this overly manly man voice.
Apart from this. Who has put this team together At NASA they make sure the astronauts have good social skills and are getting along well with others. Those people in the story are pretty dickish. Has the knowledge about how to put together well functioning teams not survived WWIII
