Steel Beach [1/2] by John Varley Read by L. J. Ganser This book was first published in 1992 Audio originally issued by NLS on cassette in 1994 Good story with a good narrator. This is one of those books I wish other people I knew would read so I could talk about it with them. It's not perfect but there are lots of interesting ideas in this novel. Life on Luna in the twenty-third century exists in a perfectly controlled climate and is governed by the Central Computer. People often live for three centuries, can be cured of any disease, and even change their gender or other features with painless surgery. So why are so many people, especially news reporter Hildy Johnson, suffering from depression Part 2 here

this one is gooood. gave it a little listen and found myself 4hrs deep, lol.
narrator captures the snarky sarcasm and thinly veiled disapproval (disgust) of the main character perfectly.
Vance's treatment of cc/ the AI is in itself worth the price of admission.

Unfortunately another great story from the past has not aged well. So many of my favorites from long ago have shared this fate. Ah well.
