The Fungus by Harry Adam Knight Read by Graeme Malcolm This book first published in 1985 Audio originally issued by NLS on cassette in 1990 Fungi are running rampant in London because of a lab experiment gone awry. Jane Wilson had been trying to create a new source of protein to help end world hunger. Instead her experiment is resulting in the death of all living creatures in England. Can three people from fungus-free Ireland find Jane and her lab notes and stop the spread of this terrible plague, or will they succumb also According to my research this book was written by John Brosnan & Leroy Kettle; Harry Adam Knight was a pseudonym that John Brosnan used. This book was also published again as Death Spore 1990

The horror bits are pretty good n gross, but damn are these characters terrible. Not only are they poorly written, the ways in which they’re actually given personalities makes them truly loathsome. What this author doesn’t understand is if readers don’t give a flying fk about the characters and there’s no particularly interesting narrative arc other than fungus is gross and spreading, it’s not really worth writing. This could’ve been alright. But it’s pretty low stakes when you kinda hope they all die sooner rather than later.

Okay, Maybe it's just me but what good would a bactericide OR antibiotics do for ANYONE infected by fungi ESPECIALLY a genetically engineered one that somehow used viral enzymes to do that engineering The author should have consulted an actual bioscientist, a mycologist and/or a virologist to plug the galaxy sized holes in the science of this book. Basic BUT competent high school biology woud be enough. DAMN.

God, the characters in this book are such creeps. Imagine being on a mission to save the world as we know it along with your own children and getting all worked up over a sociopath boning some random chick you just met and decided to leer over. Imagine listening to them screwing in the back of your army-flavoured tour bus ON PURPOSE. Pathetic.
These guys are hardly any less disgusting than the mushrooms.

good story but wilson, turns on them because hes a dangerous cowardly cuck. The author promotes upperclass coward showing the working class, whos the best and justifying it. one moment wilson is useless then next hes showing those working class whos the better man. ruins the book in the later half of the book

If you liked this, you might like these books by John Halkin called Squelch, Slither, and Slime.
It reminded me a bit of them, sort of similar pulp horror feel.
The 3 are all stand-alone books and not in a shared universe despite the similar names, so you can start with any of them.

The more victims came along, the more I decided I didn’t like this book. I could just imagine the nightmares I would have if I continue to listen! This books was giving me the creeps. Good luck to whoever finishes it, because I couldn’t.
Good book. It just weirded me out!

Wilson is such an F’ing schmuckA truly loathsome character. Useless, worse, a liability. The story was well mapped out, but the characters are just childish, one dimensional, and unbelievable. Hard to believe that Wilson could be an author, given how corny he is.

A very surprisingly good read! I consider myself an expert on doomsday books and movies and this is a very good one, once you get past the start. If you like this, try One Second After and the rest of that series.

Thanks for uploading all these books! Gives me something to listen to while I’m working/doing housework
I appreciate the work it takes to pop these up and enjoy the fact I can listen to them for free!

Holy crap, this book is awesome! I wish they wrote books like this these days! Thank you so much for posting this!
The author also wrote stories for the weekly British SciFi fantasy comic, 2000AD.

Romantic comedy with mushrooms. There were many opportunities to make this a great book but it seems rushed and lazy. Thanks for uploading it. Kept me busy for a couple of days.

This is great. When I was a kid in the 80s I used to sneak a read from my parents trashy horror novels. This has a real James Herbert vibe. Thanks for the upload.

I love how in Reagan Thatcher era Miss Thatcher was more hated than Reagan if they were the same Obviously Reagan hated Womens Liberation and Hippies.

I wonder if this was the inspiration for The last of us games I just watched the show and this popped up on my for you

This reminds me of
the girl with all the gifts,
With the fungus spreading everywhere and infecting everyone

reply

This plot is so similar to Neil Marshal’s Doomsday. I wonder if he was inspired. Friggin amazing book though
reply

Amazing, as one whom once studied mycology it’s great he can correctly pronounce fungi. Very rare to do so.
reply

That was a heavenly listen. Know I will listen to that at least 3 more times before I succumb to the fungus.
reply

Great story, but what the hell is the crack with the backwards-German crap going on in the background!
reply

Why is there background noise, ya that background noise killed this for me, good story but ya, ruined
reply

With all the random talking in the background it's like getting 2 stories in one what a steal
reply

Scientist attempt unconventional solutiom to food production. Accidentally summons Zuggtmoy.
reply

Not complaining but does anyone else hear other people talking in the background
reply

boy the narrator can sure do a mean Michael Caine impersonation! He did a very good job
reply

Really enjoyed this but there's a strange echo/voice in the background to the recording
reply

Listened to the first few chapters, fell asleep and woke up from an awful nightmare: )
reply

I am slightly enjoying this book so far. Not a bad job. Notwithstanding the re scene
reply

Im 38 minutes in and love all of these stories about assholes getting the fungus
reply

reply
