Clive Barker is so insanely talented and honestly this will sound strange but reading him as a kid in the 80s it was the first time I encountered main characters who were gay not some caricatured supporting character. Im from South Boston which was an extremely conservative Irish Catholic neighborhood back then. I'm straight but reading Clive Barker helped me get rid of lingering homophobia. It was the matter of fact ness of his gay protagonists, not trying to make a point, it made a 12 year old me recognize the absurdity of homophobia.
