Not even a cameo by Gina could save this slow paced video short. Boring even by indie film standards. Not sure why so many up voted this film. while script was awful and pacing SLOW, the only good things about this short:
The good: Good camera work, good angles, good audio balancing and soundtrack, overall excellent production values.
But you can polish this copper and dress it up nice as you can, but it has an awful script and bad storyline so it will always remain just copper and not gold.

From my own experiences and reading the comments it is clear that this does not happen this way in reality. Also if you remove the supernatural elements. Of course it is fiction and wishful thinking maybe, but it is that wishful thinking, all those have often, when they are faced with such a person. They want so desperately to change the situation that they do/try everything possible.
The film is excellent and touching. Well done!

Unfortunately, it's never that easy! Not even close! You cannot make the monster disappear with power of love, especially by an external intervention! It takes a huge amount of time, dedication and internal motivation to start the long and sometimes never-ending process of recovery. Of course, the support from family will be very helpful but rarely enough to kick start or sustain the process.
Nonetheless, good movie!

The monster/demon isn't alcohol as much as it is generational trauma and unchecked mental instability. Alcohol and other substances are methods to self-medicate that can lead to harming yourself and those nearest to you. Seeking professional assistance to gain compassion, understanding and control of your mental health is the moral of this film. Watching this heavy hearted while thinking of my mom and her mom(my grandmother.

Knowing several alcoholics (not a parent however) I understand this so well. It is like there is someone else there, some kind of monster. Those monsters are real, more real than you can ever imagine. This film gives so much strength to those who have seen this level of suffering, and so much hope for those who suffer. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this film!

Well written and directed. However I do wish the roots of the monster would have been more fantasy driven than reality driven. It's a sad fantasy and burden to put upon children of the addicted or the abusive. When the parent doesn't respond to the child's plea of love, the burden of failure shifts to the child for not being good enough to save the parent.

Indeed, when hunting monsters we must be very careful not to become one. Internal demons are the most difficult ones to dispel. And a science fiction story within a science fiction story with Gina Torres from Firefly as a bonus! A definite Doctor Who vibe there throughout the entire movie. Very well acted, very enjoyable. The Alcodemon was really frightening too.

And the moral of the story is to face your demons with courage and love the true self within in order to Free yourself from the false beliefs about yourself and from their illusory power over your life. love will set you free. Metaphorically, I perceived the mother and the daughter as being one.

This was made by talented filmmakers. The use of lighting and color. The use of showing not telling. The filmography. Subtle little things. Well done.
The story was lacking. The monster should have been a normal abusive parent with a parallel to the sci fi story

Trying to paint the black mom is a monster I don’t know maybe that’s a reason for something don’t feel right about white creators constantly trying to write about the blacks experience that they have nothing or any experience on

the body language of the actors feel natural and not forced which is uncommon among younger actors. I felt like I was looking at real life people I could encounter in my day to day life. fkelajflekwa This made me cry

This reminds me of a story called Michael Doesn't Hate His Mother by Marie Vibbert that appeared in LIghtspeed Magazine. It was about two children living with a mother battling mental illness.

This movie was sweet, funny, smart, beautiful, thrilling and desperately sad all at once. Really great work of art and it resonates very deeply with many people including myself!

Incredibly well done, such a compelling story but wrapped into a fantasy sci-fi vehicle. One of the better shorts ever presented by DUST, and I've seen a lot of them.

Love is the magic of life. It is capable of dispelling the demons but it sometimes takes one willing to try again and not giving up on the first try.

That was a genius way to show us the struggles of kids with addicted parents, great that it have a good ending, thank you for this short movie!

Awe. My 'mom's monster didn't dispel until she was on her literal deathbed in hospice. By then I'd given up & she was alone as she passed.

Great story and yes it is a monster. I just got out of detox and rehab 2 weeks ago. 46 days sober now. that monster nearly killed me!
reply

Damn. If only it was this easy, if only telling the addict I love you the right way, at the right time was the answer. poor kid.

Just wanted to see the Mom burst into flames and then brother visiting his sister at a Pysch Ward in a straight jacket.

Superb heartfelt storyline enveloping the audience with the viseral power of love vanquishing self destruction

Gotta say; best short I’ve seen here yet to date. Compelled by the characters from beginning to end. Loved it!

Well done! Great acting all around! They really brought the characters to life and made It totally believable to me.

This is what happens when Mom's drive the Fathers out of the home except the Monster Mothers don't disappear!
reply

A little sentimental for me, but I'm a black-souled old sinner. I can see it would have an audience.

Victory over child abuse is a fiction! Do NOT accept this BS message. Children need to be protected.

A young girl's vivid imagination serves as an escape, a coping mechanism for dealing with a stark Reality.
reply

Nicely done.
Well written, directed, acted, and very good production values, even the credits.

Even Gina Torres couldn't save that nonsense. And why it was called sci-fi I will never know.
reply

Yes. yes and thrice yes. This is bloody brilliant and now I want a Dispel series!

God damn that gland in the brain that makes us dependent of something! (More or less)

So beautiful. Adults, even into their 60's and 70's recall the monster times.

This gave me the same vibe as the story from Tales from the Hood. I liked it.
