Something I feel hasn’t been talked about is how the robot always seems to just make a new old man when the old one decides to just be left behind on earth
At the start we see the three rules of robotics, and throughout the movie we see how the robot deals with the first two laws, but the interesting thing is we see the third law come into effect not by the old man using the gun on the robot, but by the robot simply making a new old man, to bring through out the universe!
The reason for this (aka the third law) implys that once the old man finds a new home planet, that robot no longer has a purpose, no longer necessary to EXIST, and since the third law states a robot must protect its own existence so long as it doesn’t inherently go against the first two laws, it simply makes new old men to travel with it, to give it purpose, to allow it to KEEP existing

One of the saddest films I have seen. Hopefully I will not have nightmares after this. The eternal roundabout. An then you end up where you have started, only to find out that you have done the same shit so many times around already. And obviously have never been successful. Oh, there was one other one on Dust, can't remember the title, about a female astronaut who is stuck near what she thinks is a black hole. Someone makes radio contact with her, it turns out he is from another universe. She works out that the black hole could be a wormhole to the other universe and gets on the way to meet the guy she has been in contact with. Only when she arrives on the planet where he is stuck he is dead as too many years have passed while she was in transit that seemed brief to her. So she ends up in a different universe, as lonely as she was before. That was sad and desperate as well.

Nice looking film - ya know in this day & age one would think this whole sub titles thing would cease to exist as the abilities of AI and computer languages decipherment would be able to transfer any soundtrack into any movie in short - it’s hard to follow the movie because of small print, length of sentences, & background visual effects. Oh by the way the person including the massive level of anxiety & frustration in his character needs to chill as in demonstrating this kind of behavior only gives way to instruction that it is a viable way of communicating.

I feel like the premise of the movie is more of an experiment for some reason. While the robot is following Asimov’s law, it keeps the subject in the ship and keeps listing even the most MINUTE details that would be detrimental to the the subject. Almost as if it was more a metaphor for the subject’s own flaws. The other thing is, when they do find a suitable planet does the subject retain the memories of the previous robots

Wouldn’t the solution be to make the robot aware of your mental health and by keeping you trapped in this eternal state that it’s killing you slowly and even with all the extra body’s on the ship eventually you’ll run out of resources therefore it will see the situation as not perfect probably causing some sort of meltdown where the robot will realize that no matter what it does it will never find a
Perfect place

Oh dear me, I'm just a replicated clone of myself just like them! Please let me out of here! My quantum soul (QS) at conception was assimilated into the flesh and blood of a living genome. Now that the DNA has expired [due to old age and death] my QS has been transferred [1st Law of Thermodynamics] into a ugly dirty old docile android. Please set me free Let me out!

My goodness this was so phenomenal. And it, and a few others, are why I hate dust. I hate the thought if missing a gem like this, which means so many hours of my time watching the awfulness that is most of what dust offers up. I am not sure if it is a price worth paying, but films like this keep me paying it. I wish there was a place for just the gems.

In the latter tales from Isaac Asimov, he created the Zeroth Law. A law to precede the first 3 Laws. A Robot much protect Humanity. Asimov's stories featuring Dr. Susan Calvin, featured all the conflicts that could entail, and we are thankful to Isaac for that.

Wow! Now this was a damn good story, nightmarish in its premise, with a very surprising and unexpected ending. Unlike most films on Dust, this short story actually had a beginning, middle, and an end and should win many sci-fi awards!

I'm always fascinated when animation is this good with design and detail, and recreating lighting.
I really love looking at the background stuff, how they show dimension and shadow gradation with light.
And a great story.

That was amazing. That was an ending I wasn’t expecting. I can’t imagine being the only life left in the galaxy. Very sad and extremely lonely place that would be. It’s almost a shame this wasn’t a full feature.

I watched this somewhere else and I commented the same. This is the most beautiful thing I think I've ever watched, even as sad as it is. I wish there were more I love it so much I'll watch it over and over

Did anyone else feel bad for the robot at the end. Its change in look angles at the end as it was reloading the gun almost made it seem as though it felt the hopelessness more than the main character.
reply

And all of this could have been avoided with just one small change. Instead of Find a perfect planet for human life they should have said Find the most habitable planet for human life.
reply

I've been wondering why the six robots didn't build something, given that thousands of years may have gone since Earth's annihilation. but idly roaming about the area.

Excellent film! I kept thinking. go change the protocol to a or - 90% Perfect with opportunity to be objective! Like it was real! LOL
reply

BRILLIANT in every way! The style (kind of high tech steam punk) is BEAUTIFUL! The animation was beautiful! The story was clever!
reply

HOORAH! Absolutely Mesmerizing. Man imprisoned by robot for his own protection. Genius! Wow! Congratulations to all involved!

Very good film, the kind that give me existential crisis. Very gud.
And by the way, what language are they speaking Just wonder.

reply

I keep coming back. The graphics, the voice, the narrative. Everything in this film is so captivating.
reply

I felt like I watched a whole movie even though it was just a 19 minutes. This is what I call perfection.
reply

I was not prepared to understand him. I didn't expect him to speak Turkish.
Had a brain lag because of that

reply

Love how the robot knows everything like parents yet complies. Such a realistic approach to feelings
reply

Couldn't read all the subtitles fast enough but liked the robot. Looked like a turquoise peacock.
reply

Well done. Asimov wrote a few short stories where he brought the 3 laws of robotics into conflict.
reply

Great story. Great animation and images. Isaac Asimov tale with a Twilight Zone twist. Well done.
reply

Asimov's books expertly describe multiple ways of circumventing the 3 laws of robotics.
reply

But he could argue that not landing on a planet was harmful to his mental health.
reply

to think that the others all went down the same way of life and quit one time on earth
reply

Now my thinking as soon as i saw the gun was to just shoot the robot or the window
reply

Did not see that ending coming! Very nice twist to a real conundrum of a story.
reply

Ohhhh they are his kind. Not human at all. Just a robot body with a head.
reply

That was great, the twist at the end where everyone on Earth is him. Nice.
reply

I love these type of stories, it’s not a cliff hanger, but a goddamn loop
reply

Loved the blade runner kind of score at the beginning. Great foreshadowing
