Why do live service games get so much hate?
video description
Can also hunt everything else at that level for a chance, but without guarunteed drops and a risk of the prey being able to fight back.
Your rant could simply be: microtransactions sux. but cosmetic types are great. Useless in regards to gameplay, but the ammount of people are willing to spend on cosmetics is how many games stay solvent
And expansions are awesome if theyre done right (witcher 3, i doubt anyone can complain about getting expansions) also not a live service exclusive thing

I really hate how dependent games(really everything) have become to the internet. I m aware of the good internet has done like fixing glitches and story DLC but it s also make these game studios lazy. Anytime a game that says requires internet connection I lose complete interest and ignore it. I like to have a story and characters to follow and to have an end goal. These type of games also tend to be really grindy and I find grinding to be super boring and waste of my time. I just want to play the game not get stopped to do the same thing over and over in order to experience something new or progress. Not to mention you can t rely on the story to be supported the whole way through just look at Halo Infinite I m not sure if that s going to be getting any more story updates to finish the story any time soon if at all due to so many people in charge of that stuff being laid off. I honestly hate when a live service does well I k ow they have their fans and theirs an audience for them it s not for me but I really don t want these types to exists anything that requires internet I just see as a problem and I hate how complacent people have become to not owning things and then being shocked when what they bought digitally is no longer available. To me MMO s and Live Service games are the worst games as they will eventually just not exist in the long run and I do like to return to things that I happen to like or love which is why I don t bother with these type of games cause I know at some point I won t be able too.

One thing you've overlooked is that sports garbage comes in copy/paste yearly releases. So it would be, expansions, microtransactions and then yearly copy/paste releases.
My finger is firmly pointed at Fifa on this one. I hate that game with a burning passion! That garbage could have just been a single game, but come with new yearly content added to it to reflect any new changes. Could one imagine that grift FUT just lasting so much longer than one whole year before becoming completely redundant. But no, a whole new game because, money.
But to add to this also, one thing that REALLY pisses me off about yearly copy/paste releases. I like to look backwards a lot, playing retro consoles (PS2, Wii. etc. When I get in the mood for the console but not really know what I want to play. I'll usually go to the Metacritic A-Z list for a particular retro console. But one thing about that list THAT I HATE, is that list is COMPLETELY glutted with repeated sports garbage year on year. It just makes it take longer to find something good to play to scratch that retro itch. I would bet my life savings not single person is ever going Oh, I'm going to play Fifa 2002 on the PS2. Geez, that is my favorite game! . That game is extremely dead.

Warframe for me, is the best example of a decent live service game. It is free so you don't waste any money if you don't like it, and you don't have that initial sunk cost fallacy feeling of having to commit to it (until dozens of hours later. It also has free content updates which aren't just cosmetics or things to buy in the store. They are also cinematic quests, new gameplay mechanics, new game modes and new open worlds. All free that everyone can access. It also doesn't have lootboxes and you can actually earn the special currency in game through trading with other players, though it is quite a hassle. That means that 99. 99% of the stuff in game are available for free if you have the time. I spent 600 hours completing all quests and getting a bunch of warframes and weapons before I even spent a penny on it. And I only spent money because I thought they deserved it. Not because I sorely needed to buy this or that.
It is very grindy though, as expected from a live service game. But at least it has a lot of different game modes, game mechanics and characters (warframes) with unique abilities that it doesn't get boring quick.

It's also worth pointing out how there's just too damn many of them. There can only be so many games requiring people's constant attention as we've only so many hours in the week. And when everybody wants to try to tap into that service model it's just doomed from the start if you don't have anything more substantial than what's already occupying that space. And very few ever do. They don't find overnight success so they just get shuttered, and it's like what do you publishers expect? Especially when you're competing with games that already have dedicated bases like FFXIV, WoW, Destiny, Warframe, etc. You have to do something that makes us want to play your game more than theirs. Or, y'know, the easy solution: just stop milling out Live Service games and we can enjoy them at our leisure like wr used to instead of having to treat games we PAID for like a friggin JOB.

the time commitment is my biggest gripe bc i be having to work and shit and by the time i get done working i have to shower and eat and do other miscellaneous shit. so i end up having 1 or 2 free hours a day to play. would love to play for more like 4 or 5 hours but that s just life sadly.
i wanna be able to come home to a game i don t have to worry ab going through drastic changes or new content being pushed in. i have been so appreciative of good single player games as i ve gotten older. the gamers ultimately decide if live service games are a thing. we need to make them not worth the money investments for devs. we need to avoid all of them, show them that that s clearly not what we want. then they ll have to change their plans and give us what we want if they want to remain in business.

I just have too may live service games I play. And FoMo sucks. Fo76, gta, apex, nms, and I started warframe. I wish they d all differently spread out their content. I m trying to finish the apex battle pass. The Fo76 battle pass. Gta drip feeds content and now has cars that you can only buy for a week then disappear from the game s shops. And nms has expeditions that give unique rewards for completing them with their timeframe. Things I ve missed so far were a giant rideable worm and the Normandy from mass effect 2. I don t mind it so much till I have another non live service game I want to play. Then I have to do my chores for the day, and then play the game I want.

I tend to avoid live service games as a whole. A person I used to play games with invited me to play Warframe, I installed it, joined him, had no fkn clue what I was doing, and wound up uninstalling it for a few years, randomly got the itch to try it again, and oh boy did I get hooked, I think I sunk 300 hours in, in the course of about 3 months. That game though led me into a pretty heavy depression which is another reason I avoid live service games now, though specifically Warframe I'm just more mindful of how much I'm playing. It provides such a serious dopamine hit that it makes me feel legitimately burned out after an extended play session.

If having an engaging game for prolonged time and high replayability value is the reason for live service games, then there's a lot of single player games which has lot of replay value even after game completion. games like skyrim, fallout 4 and GTA5 which are going strong even after 10 years with only for base game purchase. with the modding scene in these games we can find new things to do even today. This clearly invalidates the need for live service games which are just fueled by greed and nothing else. Then there's new breed of roguelikes games which has unlimited replay value with again with a single game purchase.

The funniest thing is that no one ever talks about the most consumer friendly live service game ever made. MINECRAFT. This game has never cost even 30 dollars, and every single content patch has been free for over a decade. I don't play minecraft anymore because of some of the decisions made towards Gameplay more recently, but it's still the most in depth live service game because the devs make money through cons and merch, not the game itself. And yes, I'm aware of cosmetics and custom maps, but these don't give you any inherent advantage, and bring in much less money than the other stuff.

Don't compare western & eastern LS just cause they both come under games.
Eastern Dev's have a different design philosophy and different audience who mostly play one game due to their schedule so if u don't really under how regulations and backbone of eastern LS work, bloody don't speak on it.
Western LS have a major problem cause they are asking for full price upfront and give worse QoL for the buck. Its unregulated and built around FOMO & competitiveness to monetize the games since for some reason PvP in any fking form / bloody endgame is always the main focus of western games.

I played Anthem on Xbox pc pass for around 20 hours. I thought everything about the game was amazing until I realized what it should ve been like and the lack of players. It was still fun to fly and mess around but that s why I only played for 20 hours. Glad I didn t buy it.
Additionally I m boycotting Ubisoft and EA until they get rid of their ridiculous game launchers that are trash. Just let me play directly from steam without needing the EA app open. I guess that s what a live service company does though lol

I agree with both sides here. There are lots of live service games that just don't interest me, however there are a few that I do play. I enjoy games where I can play for a short amount of time and get satisfaction out of it and then stop, where as with some longer single player games, it could vary how long I'd have to play just to get to a good stopping point. I still enjoy them, though, because they do end, whether it's a satisfying end or not. It really comes down to what you want to spend your time on.

crazy how i could agree then look at all the games i been mainly playing For years, and there all Live Service Games (Rainbow 6 Seige, No Mans Sky, Fall Out 76, Riders Republic, Sea Of Thieves, Roller Championship, DC Universe Online, And Im Currently Waiting For Skate 4 to Come Out. so i think i might be the type of guy they make these games for SMH Srry Guys. i did grow up as my favorite game being OG RuneScape Back In 01-02 so i guess live service games never bothered me because of that.
