Starfield - before you buy

Starfield - Before You Buy FatManChew909: I didn't love the Fallout games because they were bug free. I loved Fallout because I saw the potential and the entertainment value was enough to overlook the flaws. Same with Cyberpunk. I saw enough where I stuck around and now it's a much better game. I'm hoping Starfield becomes better and we don't get the Fallout 76 Todd Howard meets that one CEO who oversaw the space game that lied about every feature.

I always appreciate a gameranx before you buy video. Truth be told, this was about my expectations for the game, and truth be told, I'm happy about it. Its a new IP, so I'm sure Bethesda has a lot in store for it. I'm just glad that they were fairly upfront about a lot of things. I'm sure a bunch of people will be upset over the quality of the game, and while its understandable to be frustrated, this just goes to show that Bethesda hasn't given up on creativitiy. Hopefully at some point they'll get off the Creation Engine to something much more modern to improve the overall quality of their games. That being said, I'm still looking forward to loading this game up for the first time on September 6th.

My biggest worry is performance. I've seen gameplay from people that seem to be running it near 100FPS with few drops, and I've seen other's running it at what looks like a constant 20FPS. If my PC can't handle it for whatever reason, then it's an automatic no from me till it can. Wish more people were talking about their specs and relative performance. Looking at this footage, It looks like the performance is unplayable by my standards. The 30FPS with the drops literally makes me feel physically sick. I just couldn't do it. I'll probably pick it up on gamepass once it officially releases so it's not the end of the world if I can't run it.

My major problem is with the marketing. There are a lot of us who have a soft spot for Bethesda games. All they had to do was to sell it as one. All of us know mods are what actually make the games better. For me freedom, creativity. etc all would have been exciting enough, but nah, its going to be the NEXT-gen of the next-gen game, with life altering gameplay and what not. We have tested it many times to reduce the no. of bugs as possible is better than least buggy Bethesda game (it gives the impression that it will have almost no bugs. but actually its going to have only 98 bugs compared to the 100 in other Bethesda games.

I want the game but I dunno doesnt seem like I WANT to play it. Also getting really tired of preorder head start for games. Especially when they are not flawless, here is a toaster you can buy it for 40 dollars and get it next week and have a 20% chance to burn your house down or you can pay 60 dollars and get it right now with a 28% chance to burn your house down!
Dunno seems like a run of the mill game and I can wait for it to be on sale. Which sucks because im not actually playing anything now, im reading 19 different i revived 10 years ago when people became players manga and they are more interesting.

I get the impression that open world games are not your thing. For example, all the 'stuff' you complained about regarding the ships and the planets are exactly what I expected and wanted. Exploring for hours is cool. Obviously everyone is different, but this game is about that as well. I already see myself playing way more than 100 hours. Buying this game to only play through the storyline without exploring and building is a waste of money, IMO.
With all that said, I appreciate this video. There were a lot of good info presented. Thank you.

I was secretely hoping to hear that the game was a BIT more in touch with the hype and bringing a bit more excitement, polish, and new flavours as a new IP, but I feel like this exactly what I was expecting.
I feel like the comments on the pacing and process of exploration are the most daming for me.
EDIT: Still fairly excited to jump in myself and start playing, but not nearly as bummed that I've gotta work today and tomorrow.

no seamless travel, flying up into space is a cut-scene and not seamless, when you land on a planet in generates a map around your ship that takes 45min to walk to the edge which is a wall, you cant walk around the circumference of the planet like no mans sky, if you want to fly from earth to mars its a loading screen with no flying involved in fact you pick p[laces on the map and just port there, tell me again how much you love this game? lol

i've always thought pre-designed levels are far superior than randomly generated ones, especially when levels are designed with many approaches, making replays feel fresh, as well as just simply being more beautifully crafted. i think starfield would have benefitted greatly from that philosophy as well. having a pre-designed level also makes playtesting much simpler, and bug fixes easier, and adding secrets easier

Im gonna skip this one. I canceled my subscription last month, fully aware this was coming up. I just havent been satisfied with my xbox, and i havent even turned it on for a few months beforehand, and i havent really powered it up since.
Maybe ill come back later, give it a try, but the few reviews ive seen so far give me the mental image of: Same Bethesda Jank, New package.

Cheers Jake, great coverage and really interesting to hear your thoughts especially after the latest FPS podcast Ep where you were discussing if there is still room for 7/10 games which is the score IGN have given Starfield. I wonder if their rating system needs to be re-evaluated if something like Immortals can receive an 8/10 but have less than 300 players overall.

I m a PS5 guy. I was this close to buying an Xbox Series X so I could play this one, but I think now (although I m still interested, I ll wait for holiday sales later this year - the game looks cool, but isn t stellar (groan) enough or new-looking enough for me as a long time Bethesda enthusiast (I hate you Microsoft) to try to land it immediately.

No mentions of how much roleplaying is in the game and how much can your character can differ based on your build. I'm gonna skip this one. I loved Skyrim and still love Morrowind and this just looks like a bigger Fallout 4 in space. The game looks absolutely uninspired to me judging from reviews. I hope TES 6 will look more. interesting.

im really really really really not trying to be a hater, I want good games because the gaming industry has been 90% dry. It just looks so. plain. so much like many other games I've seen and played. with mechanics and play thats watered down from other games. I WANT TO BE WRONG, I'D LOVE A NEW BETHESDA GAME TO PLAY AND ENJOY.

Looks like The outer worlds. Doesn't look like anything I'm interested in. I played through outer worlds and hated it. I did not agree with the fallout new Vegas in space headlines. Maybe I'm alone in this, maybe not. Honestly I don't think they will surpass skyrim or fallout nv/4 anytime soon.

Mods will make this game great. In a few months or a year this will be fantastic. If you're a big fan of Bethesda you'll enjoy it no matter what.
If you're on the fence about this game wait a few months and keep your eye on the mods. Pick it up on sale and it'll be worth it in the long run.

Honestly, the Bethesda Bugs make me excited. I know they're supposed to be ironed out as much as possible, because people are paying; however, the funny bugs (not the game breaking ones) always bring a good laugh. People take GAMES too seriously. live laugh love my guys.

If they don't ditch this engine soon they are going to burn up the thousands of hours of goodwill they've built with gamers. This looks bad, they should feel bad. Fallout 4 didn't even look that great when it launched and this doesn't look much better.
reply

Exactly what I expected, a Bethesda game as simple as that, and that's great! Definitely not generation defining nor GOTY, but still great.
I wouldn't buy an Xbox to play it, but would definitely try it if my friend gets it and lends me his Xbox.

Honestly I'm skipping this. BG3 has my full undivided attention at the moment. By the time I finish everything I want to do in BG3, Stanfield would have some good support in the modding community. That to me is when the game will actually be good.
