At 3: 11, you turned on the light in front of you, then you said this is what daylight looks like. but why? You opened the shades of the window behind you, which is really a 5500K Fill light, right? Then at 3: 40 you said you changed the light from 5500K to 3200K. I thought you said it was 5500K, and that's what you set your white balance to at 3: 11. Then at 3: 29 you set white balance back to 3200K. Then you said you changed your light to tungsten as well too, but that's the same light - just adjusted a little higher. But you really mean you changed that light from 5500K to 3200K? MY GOD it's hard to follow this video. Can you explain this in a more clear and logical way, like do this, then this, then this?

Thanks this is cool. The last 3 though are incremental change, I mean. Cinematography is not about beautification or idealism, it's ALWAYS about scene motivation and character motivation. (unless you work on a soapy that is meant to represent idealism. A lot of people think lighting ALWAYS needs to be like this. Roger Deakins said himself, it's not about following the cookie-cutter setups, it's about achieving your imagination. You imagine the light on your subject and/or background, and try to build that, wheather you only use a key and practicals, or a fill and rim or just a rim.

I think this technique was good when you couldn't adjust the brightness power of the lights. Bouncing it off then diffusing to get the right amount you want instead of having the right LED and tweaking that. Using older methods with today's tech will just make it more time consuming but definitely nice content to watch just misinforming people on the better methods if this is the only method they take for lighting forever.

Great video! Thanks for sharing this knowledge. I have a question and would appreciate your response. Does the spot light always have to be on the right side of the subject? I prefer the left profile on my face and hence wanted to know if I should use the spot light on my left when filming a video of myself or should I still stick to keeping it on the right?

In terms of self tape auditions, do you recommend using a grid on the softboxes? Also, I've seen so much info out there that it seems everyone does something different. I plan on getting a softboxes that I'll place diagonally on me as well as a pop up background. Do you recommend any other lights like a back light?

2: 18 I'm having trouble understanding how that scene is with all the lights off. Looks like a ton of window light. What are the camera settings at 2: 18? Also, How are the CTO Gels placed within the softbox? Can these gels get hot and become a fire hazard or anything?

Great video! The biggest challenge with creating beautiful lighting is not the equipment. It's all about how many Grips/Electricians you can afford to move it around. The best lights in the world are no good if you are not able to get them off the truck in time: )

I can't tell where your lights are with the arrows you're using. At 2: 56, where is that light? outside the window? at her feet? in front of her? and if so, what's the difference in the position of the previous light, at 2: 53?

I just miss the motivation to chose for one or the other lighting setup. I mean in making a film you tell a story and you want to create moods and emotions. So can you explain when to use these lighting technics?

I was pretty aware of everything until the softbox and then I wondered why there was still so much video left. Because of the really cool stuff that came afterwards! Awesome!

Light is an important element in a photo shoot or video shoot. It changes a person look from old to young, poor skin to flawless skin. This is a good tutorial for us.

Very nice. :) Anyway to make the industrial lights look softer? I'd like to carry that big lamp shade soft box thing everywhere I go otherwise.

I wanna set up a semi-permanent little studio area in our house, and now I wanna use cove lighting. My wife's gonna think I've lost my shit.

when you were sitting at your desk plugging story blocks, what Lens were you using? I'm curious on the focal length? as well as exact lens.
