My sister (now 37) has Tetralogy of Fallot. Back in the early '80s it took three open-heart surgeries to correct by the time she was 5 yrs old. My mother still speaks fondly of the nurses that helped them along the way.
But even then, they said a lot of ToF kids appeared sickly and/or didn't live to be 18. We've sure come a long way over the past few decades.

Its a team sport
As a nurse, Ive noticed that every great Doctor has always said that, in some form. Truly, the whole peri-operative experience would not be possible without the vital work of each and every team member, including the cleaning, maintenance, and dietary staff. We cant do it without each other.

I'm a biology teacher and that explanation was simplified in a way that made it completely wrong. The lung does not clean blood. I understand the need of making things simpler but this was not a necessary change.
Great depiction of the other topics and very heart-warming conclusion though: )

They end up having a completely normal life
Unfortunately that's not true. They invariably end up needing additional procedures during the remainder of their lives, and depending on number of factors, may suffer from a higher mortality.

I have tetralogy of fallot! 2 open-heart surgeries so far, 1 hopefully closed surgery in the next 5 or 6 years. Its a pretty rare defect as far as I know, so its interesting to see people talking about it on TV.

THIS is a huge reason for not giving birth home. My mother is a doctor and I know from her about babies who arrived too late to the hospital. I know it sounds cool, but please, don't do it.

There is a hierarchy in the medical profession and rightfully so. You can spot a good surgeon by their surroundings and the way they behave, as their reputation is unprecedented.

I actually forgot this man is from my country, Turkey. I'm proud and also upset that this guy achieved so much but we (Turks) were not there to support him.

So are you saying that if she (the nurse) was not there, you would have failed? that is what it sounds like to me. literally what you said.

My son has hypoplastic left hear syndrome and the heart surgeon and nurses were amazing. I thank God for these people every day.
