Unboxing and setting up this 80s retro oddity on LGR! The Intermatrix Mac Phone is an early peripheral for the original Apple Mac computer from 1984. For $200 back then you got a telephone to stick on the side of your system, a dialer program. and that's about it! It's become a rather rare collectible, so let's install and test this one 40 years later. Become an LGR YouTube member to see videos early and more! Man. that really brings me back to those days. got started with Apple in 1991 or 1992 with a Performa 400 (upgrading from a C64 we got around 1988. Was one of the first of my class in I believe 1995/96 to get a Modem thanks to my Dad. A Supra 28. 8 which was top of the line of what was available in our area at that time. It had a super handy Fax Solution (SupraFax - Worked perfectly together with Symantec GreatWorks or ClarisWorks) that was very easy to use and also a phone dialer. As I had no Microphone, I used one end of my wired earbuds (did you know that one of them also worked as a Microphone) and while it was pretty sht quality, one could have a conversation that way.
Around 2000, I got a used Performa 5500/275 (the cool black one) which aside from those functionalities (now with a whopping 56k modem) also had a built in TV & Radio Tuner. Super cool and I loved how my friends jaws regularly dropped to the floor and how it shut them right up about how PC was better than Mac. Back in those days, if a PC could play back video without too many issues, it was a win for most people.

You've got a copy of that floppy Don't copy that floppy! lol
I'm not sure, but that endless boot-loop might not be power related. Try holding CMDOptionShiftDelete while turning it on, it depends on the model/firmware of that Mac _(Maybe it was CMDOptionShiftSpace, lol)_
Yeah those older Mac systems were very customizable. I combined OS7 and made it work with the OS8 finder so I could run OS 8 software on the OS7 system. These days, with all those admin password nonsense every operating system has, not so much. Do you know how you made a bootable floppy on the Mac, you took your system folder and copied it to a floppy or new harddisk. Done, instantly bootable.

LGR I am an old school phone engineer, and I love your vids, if u can ever grab a used PBX
A must for working dialtone, for BBS emulation, PC to PC, and demos like this but not dependent on Bluetooth codec issues.
The following is my best products for lab, playing MSRP that dont hurt the bank.
Grandstream UCM 6104 (SIP/VOIP) - 100. 00 - 150. 00
or SOHO-PBX SP-208 (Pure Analog office PBX) 75. 00
I have even played with US army field phones using the GS-HT802 (45. 00) to make calls across the room and across the internet)

I never had this BUT in the 1990's I did use Megaphone with my GV internal modem and with a Geoport adapter with the internal speakers and plain talk mic. It was decent telephony SW and it did leave much to be desired for audio quality but it worked. I do have an Apple Videophone system I have never used, I believe it had similar telephony software but was the great grandparent of todays facetime and Zoom.

We still have lan-lines in California. Fax me. The Gov. and Hospitals and Education still use fax machines. Microsoft Windows Dial pad for the Mac. WinFax. Windows had allot of Calendar scheduling programs with built-in Dailers too. All you needed was a sound card and modem on your PC.

There's something rather charming about the mismatched hardware colors. The ash white Mac, the brightly colored cable, slightly yellowed phone and X-Link adapter being black. It's somehow both charming and causes my OCD klaxons to blare at the same time.

With all the hoops that phone has to go through the voice message sounds good enough for a prank. Know anyone old enough to have lived through the 80's leave voice mail Night Call, Collect from the 1990's warning about the future to the past 1980's.

I would imagine that in normal usage the phone’s pass through RJ-11 jack would be connected to a modem and then the wall jack, so you have both connected to the Mac and can make calls or use the modem on the same land line at your desk.

Please tell me you've played the hacking part of Enter The Matrix. I keep telling people it's better than the actual game but nobody seems to care because the game itself has been memed to death by AVGN clones.

but guys, seriously, im over 40. and got stuck thinking on this generations of kids 5-6 years old, they may never saw a land line phone Currently i dont know nobody who has that, what can be the sense.

The way the Mac SE looks like a cyclops talking on the phone with that attached is the cutest. I didn't expect the plastic shades match up so well, that actually looks pretty good.

Speaking about floppy disks. I still remember that one time I pk-zipped a 100mb game into 70 floppy disks. I spent 2-3 hours at my friend's home to unzip them. CRC error at disk 69.

1: 30 I love how those 3d printed Duke busts keep cropping up everywhere in LGR stuff recently, like they replicate on their own and are infesting Clint's house.

Cool device. It would be a shame if Apple went whole hog and released their own line of cellular phones in an effort to destroy human interaction and experience
reply

At least it did more than Apple's $1000 monitor stand. But this is even more proof that Apple users will pay good money for anything Apple. Except actual apples.

I think there's an alternate universe somewhere out there where Apple went all-in on this concept, got burned, and then never tried anything phone-related again.

Mac Phone
Mac Bottom
Mac Station
Mac Charlie
Mac Tilt
And not once did they think we could make the computer bigger and introduce
THE BIG MAC.

Cool phone adapter could use that on an Italian marble and gold phone I have that has a creepy weird ring. It is 4 pin square but I do have that adapter.

It sort of looks like the Macintosh is holding a phone to its ear. And especially in this scene 10: 44 the floppy disk along with it could look like a cigarette
