LGR - Prezzie Hunt - PC Game Review

It's December and that means Christmas games on LGR! First up is the freeware classic from Robert Hindle, where you hunt for presents and. that's it! Shadow: This is kind of sad a statement to admit, but I've tried playing this game a few times since the video came out last year and for the life of me I can't consistently climb the first ladder in the game - and if I do somehow manage to get past it, the _second_ ladder in the game stymies me. Doesn't work the traditional -get near it and you can kinda fly- method _Half-Life_ and most subsequent FPS titles use, and trying to use the Use key to latch onto it does nothing. Only thing that _seems_ to work is hitting the ladder with my face at full speed (usually one of the bars on the sides as opposed to dead-center, for some reason, which _sometimes_ gets me the height I need (and usually doesn't) - but hitting the wall also means my horizontal momentum is now zeroed out, so I get the height, but plop back down to the ground immediately. Coming at it at anything less than full speed doesn't work at all.
Actually, the controls in this game feel pretty terrible all-around. Movement is pretty slow in general; your running speed (which only works forward) is more of a leisurely walk, and your walk speeds (all other directions, as well as a separate button for -walk forward- for some reason) are more like tiptoeing. Acceleration for both is very sluggish. For some reason, strafing overrides forward/backward movement. Slopes send you downward marginally faster than you can walk. Heading down slopes also seems to eat your jumping inputs (I can only assume you're -bouncing- down them, so that likely won't work like it should.
I mean, I know the Pie-in-the-Sky Engine was notoriously bad, but with ladders and physics _this_ broken when climbing the former and nailing jumps with the latter is required to progress, I'm wondering if there's not some kind of compatibility issue I'm running into a la _Santa Claus in Trouble_. More frustratingly, I can't seem to find any proposed fixes, and only one other person who seems to have had trouble with the ladders (who posted a YT video somewhere, but had marginally more luck with the first ladder than I did. I guess I should try it on another computer (maybe the Win 98 one sitting on the wall way behind me) just to be certain.

I'm glad you specified that it was a horrible apocalypse and not a warm fuzzy cozy one, I mean if you're gonna have an apocalypse you may as well do it right, right? Also, where's the music from that starts at like 7: 00, I know it but I'm having a total blackout here and it's driving me nuts trying to remember, I wanna say like paper mario or chrono trigger or something?

When I was kid I asked my parents to hide my presents and leave notes with hints as to where they could be. My thought process was, I like finding things that are hidden and they are gonna be good as it is Christmas. I was then tasked with doing the same for my little sister where I'd make it incredibly hard and legend of Zelda themed.

As someone who loves exploration games such as LSD Dream Emulator (Would be a super neat review ) and Yume Nikki, this game is real neat. I love the low quality graphics and the lack of. anything alive. I honestly would love to create something based upon this engine. Perhaps with a linked open world and and objectives!

I can't believe the quality of that split screen effect. Natural light, a moving background of trees, a camera position almost impossible to lock down, its incredible. I know it was only for a thirty second clip, but its still incredible to me to see how seemlessly it stiched together. And six years ago, no less.

I'm usually not in the mood for Christmas or new years these days as we're just getting older with more worries, but something about your videos really brings it back to the days before all those worries and stresses and puts me in a good mindset for the holidays. So thanks for your videos and your style.

This game totally reminds me of all those demos and shareware Mac games I used to get from CDs provided by magazines like MacAddict and whatnot. Loved the holiday special ones, especially one particularly merry Space Invaders clone where you defended your Mac from the evil PC menace! Good times.

Cynical cash-ins don't befit the spirit of the season? Perhaps it's because I'm a cynic, but I'd say that befits the over-commercialized spirit of the over-commercialized season quite well. :P
But ah, who am I to complain? Thanks for making these videos, LGR!

At first I thought this game was going to be about Pretzels. I do love me some giant soft pretzels. and beer. Enough even to go searching for them in a virtual 3D world. Nothing to do with Christmas you say? Clearly you've never been to my house! ;)

I really busted my ass laughing at the intro, I didn't expect Christmas LGR to return, but I guess he is here to stay now. -lol-
As for the game, I won't play it, but I can appreciate honest work from a single guy. He is really really awesome.
