An iconic 90's PC game that stands the test of time, Duke3D is one of my all-time favorites. Approaching the game's 20th birthday, it's time to talk about the original release, the Atomic Edition, and more! Hail to the balls of come get some damn I'm good steel, baby!

i was 6 years old when i played my first Nuke Dukem game it was Duke nukem time to kill on the ps1 i loved the shit out of that game and played 2player with my dad in it too. i couldnt understand english and the game was hard as dukes balls of steel so it was alot of trial and error but damn i still think its the best one i love 3D but time to kill it just above that in my heart and the octobrains were absolutely terrifying to me. i never got to complete the game but i also didnt have a memory card cus the only we had was my dads and he didnt want to risk me deleting anything on it so i had to borrow the ps1 and never turn it off to progress but my mom came in every early morning and wake me up and shut the ps1 down. i absolutely HAD to git gud at any game i played to progress and do it faster and faster. imagine playing GTA on ps1 and duke nukem and other games and no way to save lol. I NEED STEAM TO PULL THE FINGERS OUTTA THEIR ASSES AND GET TIME TO KILL ON STEAM

. well, to answer your closing question, what I'm waiting for is a way to get a copy of the original game. It doesn't seem to be available for sale anymore.
There's some kinda -updated rerelease- over on places like Steam, but as far as I can tell it hasn't reviewed at all well with anyone who knows the difference.
Doesn't seem to support mods either, which is a big part of the draw for me when coming to these sorts of older games.
And I'm not willing to settle for a -worse- version of something which used to be good.
Would like to play it someday, and if somebody does know of a way to find the original game, without going Ebay or its ilk, I'll be all over it like it was my own territory. Until then, though, I've kinda given up on ever finding it myself. :(
So in the meantime, it's not really a fair question, is it?

I love the review. Much of the nostalgia, and as you - it opened up the door to programming with the level editor.
The zeitgeist of the time, to sit behind a PC without internet (or going to the library to download 1, 44Mb of content to read or watch at home) and anyone that had a little curiousity, poking around and trying to open literally any file on the disks. It really gave something to play with and see instant result, sparking programming aspirations and fascination.

Loved playing this on the LAN in the computer labs at school. It was less competitive and more just raw fun. LIke you didn't even care who was winning. Just using the freeze ray or shrink gun on friends was hilarious over and over again. Or getting a jet pack and pipe bombs and dropping them on people down below. It's sad that so many games since take themselves so seriously. I think the last game that was as raw fun as Duke 3D was Saints Row IV.

Duke3d is a really great game, and back in the day, it was a real breath of fresh air compared to Doom and Quake. It was unique in that it didn't take itself seriously - a First Person Shooter with a sense of humour - who would believe it could work? It had great gameplay and was filled with jokes and references to popular culture and Science Fiction. -Blood- which used the same engine, was also good.

I think Mexico was one of the countries it was banned from because I could never find it around here, only Doom (and Doom was pretty difficult to find, only pirated versions were available. Duke Nukem Forever attracted me with all the hype, but then it turned out to be a dissapointment back then so I didn't know what to think. I might give it a try since the game is so cheap on Steam nowadays.

Also, I'd love to see a new Duke Nukem game parodying action movies and shows from the 2010s (and I guess 20s, with loud bass booms, classical music playing during action scenes, monsters that were somehow created because of climate change and a Chris Pratt cameo in every level. I think that if done right, it would genuinely feel like Duke if he was created today.

A Switch port was just released for the 20th Anniversary, and I am happy to say that it's freaking fantastic! They absolutely nailed it and included everything they possibly could, and it just looks and plays superbly! And best of all, it's on sale currently on the EShop for only 5 bucks! Probably the easiest 5 bucks I've ever spent on the Switch.

I Hope You Can Appreciate This Comment Or You'll Think That I'm Just Another Viewer Who's Lost His Mind But Then You Don't Reply To My Comments So, Who Cares, Right! In 1996, I Sold My Honda CB-400F So I Could Buy A 486-DX 100Mhz Just So I Could Play Duke Nukem 3D & Yes, If I Could Go Back In Time I Wouldn't Have Sold It For ANY Reason! C'est La Vie. ..

Quake is the reason i could never get into Duke Nukem 3D. Quake came out in the same year and wiped the floor with every FPS game at the time. The next year Quake 2 did the same with its competition, then, in 1998, Half-Life revolutionized the enemy AI, the level design in the FPS genre. so for me, Duke Nukem 3D was always outdated, even back in 96.
