A Pair of 1980s Packard Bell PCs: PB 500 & VX88

Unboxing, inspecting, and testing two old Packard Bell PCs from the late 80s that need restoring! I imported these VX88 and PB500 Turbo XT PCs from Canada a while back and they each need some repair and testing. So let's do it! Or, as much as I can in the scope of this video anyway. I was happily surprised how functional one them ended up being, and the other will have to wait for a future restoration. Jason: As much as I love the new tech we have at our fingertips, these videos put a big smile on my face when I can see an old machine I wish I still had. There is really something I miss about the early days of the PC, DOS, batch files, autoexec. bat/config. sys all that stuff. Wish time could stand still at times.

You are correct about the keyboard speed switching on the PB 500. It boots up at 4. 77 MHz, and to switch it into 9. 54 MHz turbo mode you press Ctrl - Alt - Plus (on the numeric keypad. The LED will then change from orange to green. I think originally it would've come with a small program to do the speed change in software, so you could put it in your AUTOEXEC file. Ctrl - Alt - Minus switches it back to slow speed.

Oh, how I love watching these old PC vids. Made me realize how grateful I should be with what I have, aaand regretted myself for not being born at the time experiencing all that myself. Honestly, might not even be able to purchase them anyway, so here I am.
Great vid, Sir.

All your videos are so great, but I really enjoy these kind of vids where you're just talking through the camera with the sounds of the fans and hard drive. Really gives a kind of post garage sale let's see if this old pc works or dude check this out feeling

If you delete lsconfig. sys from the C: \susan directory it removes all restrictions. (it also deletes the 'backup' and 'ability' entries, but you can re add those in the menu. Also if you type the '? ' on the menu you get instructions on how to use the software

Seeing him sitting across the table from us makes me feel like I'm talking to an uncle who really likes computers. And LIKE that uncle who really likes computer I have, at best, a 5% level of understanding but it's fun to listen to anyway

Oh man, Lazy Susan! They used to use that at my school growing up, on the machines that the admin staff used. What a throwback. I'd love to get a copy of that for the DOS PC I plan to build.

I'll always get nostalgic with Packard Bell, as my first PC was one of the multimedia systems of theirs (a 486 SX. It was pretty killer for its time - and I should still have it in storage.

Soon as a I saw that Crystal directory I had a hunch. Lots of shareware titles made it across the border. Crystal, Keen, Jill, and Duke were all good friends of mine in the 90s.
