An overview of the game Ladder by Yahoo Software, played on a Kaypro 4/83 vintage portable computer. Ladder Java Port Also, many thanks to TZ and Dave, the developers of the game, for the following: there is a cheat code for Ladder which was used by us to test the levels. On the command line, you can type one or more of the following to enter into cheat mode: PRO LEVEL n PRO MEN n PRO SCORE n For example: ladder pro level 3 pro men 10 would start you on level 3 with 10 lives

I kad a Kaypro computer. Ladder was easy to master, once you find the cheat: If you stand on top of the character that Der rocks come out of, and you jump up each time one comes out, you can rack up so many extra Lads that you can power through every level. Eventually there is a level that's impossible to win. There simply isn't enough time, even if you play perfectly. At that point, I lost all interest in it. But until then, I found it to be a very enjoyable game.

There are also a ton of CP/M emulators out there. One of my favorite is RunCPM, since it can use loose files (and so doesn't require disk image files) Another is Altair32, which is a complete Altair 8800 emulator that runs on Windows. There are also some hardware Altair clones that run on microcontrollers: Altairduino and Altair Clone. The Altairduino is probably the most fun you can have with an Altair (and so CPM) without, you know, actually owning an Altair. :)

Peggy had a Kaypro for a long time on King of the Hill, then on the episode about the year 2000, she got a new computer (iMac G3) because her kaypro wasn't y2k compliant. One of the characters on that episode claimed that she worked at Dell and told Peggy that it wasn't y1k compliant and her watch has more memory. I thought it was funny lol.

2: 40 You repeat all the levels before moving onto a 'new' level. So like 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2 etc. This (or CatChum) was the first video game I ever played, as we got a Kaypro II when I was about 3 or 4. My next (and first graphical) video game experiences were on the Odyssey2, I think Pick Axe Pete or Smithereens.

I was 12 years old when my dad got a Kaypro10 for his business, and I junked out on this game time and time again.
I actually learned to use the debugger tool, DDT, to hack this game and enable my own cheat mode by adding walkways where the jumps were difficult and walls to keep the bad-guys from running into me. :)

i wouldnt mind seeing some reviews on say an -oric atmos- or a -dragon 32/64- or -Amstrad cpc464- BBC B and Acorn electrons are fun if you want the definitive game of Elite, and if you can get a Sharp x68000 (basically a capcom arcade reference machine in pc format- and review that then im in Lazy heaven

Nice memories, I remember one of my first programs was Ladder wriiten in FORTH for internal memory of the monitor of MS DOS station, was quite a chaos of code, but it worked. I used paper prints made on RSX11 where I 've seen it first as the data files for levels etc.

Yeah, this is why I got banned from that library that had these machines.
That beep sounds like what happens if you type ASCII 0007 into DOS, Hold ALT and press 007 on the numeric pad on a dos machine and you will know what I am on about.

did you do a video for catchum too? that is the other kaypro game I remember. Actually I don't remember anything about it except for the bad pun in the instructions that says to remember -there's more than one way to skin a cat, chum-

Wow, great video! That computer looks like the most powerful computer ever designed. You could run a laundromat with that thing. But seriously, this is a cool video, I love seeing the ASCII-only graphics! Thanks for making this!
