oh Played Liero so much on our windows 98 computer when a kid. when getting back into retro games, like 10-11 years ago. and started with dosbox, I was very dissapointed that game would not work very good, atleast at the time I could not get it working. I defintly got more used to dosbox later, but now probably 2-3 years since really messed with it, since gotten real old hardware, and it can run liero perfectly! too bad I don't have anyone to play it with, like my brothers, they not really interested in playing old games on 20+ year old monitor with me, I remember always we would use the lvl editor in liero, and we build like our own fortresses, and shot at each others from it. I really hope I can get someone to play it with me next time I gets some visits) also loved the bear-a-byte. btw Im still waiting for more upgrades videos on that Packard Bell LGR previously tried installing that gpu in.

This version of Liero is amazing, a distant relative and I spent a whole summer vacation playing it, day after day, made special themed maps for it and such, played around with the setting. It's a crazy fun time when you crank up the blood to 500% and the reload time to 0 and spam any weapon just for the fun of it: ) The only problem is that digging in the dirt is not straight forward and can only be done on a keyboard because of the weird controls.

That viewsonic q71 brings back old memories of working at the local grocery store back in high school. Sterk s had a number of windows 98 machines based off of some sort of Dell prebuilt desktop paired with this monitor for all the registers back then. I was amused to watch a cute coworker attempt to play an audio cd on one not realizing that the computer isn t going to pass audio to the beeper of the barcode scanner.

About the Viewsonic that stopped working. A lot of new old stock monitors have problems where the neckboard is contacting a foam pad on the back of the plastic cover. This accumulates moisture and causes corrosion on the RF shielding of the neckboard. If you open the monitor and carefully remove the neckboard then spray the socket to the tube down with some contact cleaner then Deoxit that may alleviate the issue.

Not saying it would have helped with that potato SiS card, but I'll mention this every time I see someone open the 3D driver selection in UT99. Try selecting show all devices and trying OpenGL. I have run UT99 on a lot of machines over the years and never have I found either old or new cards that either perform or look best on Direct3D. It's usually either OpenGL or Software being your best bet.

A non-computer aside but I'm always so envious whenever you show your back yard wilderness. People in my neighborhood keep cutting down shade trees either to make it easier to do renovations on their houses or just because they don't want the hassle of raking leaves. I'm like the only person actually /adding/ trees to his property (though they're barely saplings at the moment.

I'm really hopeful that the work I'm doing with my therapist works, and before the end of 2024 I'll be able get over my social anxiety issues and finally get to a convention. It's been a dream of mine for years to meet some of my favorite creators, and you're definitely #1 on my list. That would be so awesome!

This is still one of the most interesting PC's I've ever seen with such a wholesome backstory for it's existence. this really is the best kind of artisan work to see even if this is probably one of the goofiest PC's to exist
It's also really interesting to see how you prep for an event.

I've got the same motherboard! It's a PCChips/Elpina M717! The Retro Web's page's images were taken by me.
EDIT: By the looks of it, it's not the same motherboard but it is very similar. It shares the internal VGA adapter and USB 1. 1/PS2/Infrared daugherboard

I'm kinda looking forward to playing with Savage in retro games - go a Via EpiaEN1000 board with a c7 - its basically a 1GHz P3 with a savage 3. from 2007 lmao.
Should make a fun itx retro machine, is in a really nice old CM Media Aluminium 'VCR Style' case

Seeing Liero was great. The term liero is a synonym to worm in Finnish. The game was developed by a Finn to be a Worms X Quake mashup in 2D. You should make a video of Finnish influence on PC gaming at some point, it's a LOT bigger than one might expect.

LGR do you know why the P3 was running so slow in software mode before you upgraded? i had a P2 with 350 MHz and i remember getting playable framerates in software mode without any problems. it would be strange if a P3 with 500 MHz would run so slowly.

Dang. So sad about the ViewSonic, absolutely lovely looking thing. Also lost a brand new in box Proview CRT monitor back in 2021 literally after 8 months of usage, the flyback just died for no apparent reason and was pretty much unsalvageable

my friend had Liero on his old DOS PC, no idea how he had it, no Internet access or anything. we were a big fan of Worms though, so this was a good substitute when we were at his house. crazy game. Chiquita Bomb was nuts!

Phil's Computer Lab has some drivers for that C-Media card that may make it work a bit better.
I actually quite like the CMI8738, but I tend to use them in more modern systems, so I haven't messed with the DOS compatibility.

Wish I knew there was good PCI GPUs back around 1999-2000. I had a Compaq Presario 5441 with an AMD K6-2 475MHz CPU, 56MB RAM, and no AGP slot. Was the first PC I had all to myself that my dad bought me when I was 11.

OK CLINT i don't know how you did not notice it but the resolution on unreal tournament was 512x384 which is a low and very bad resolution especially for text, you should have tried change it to 640x480 or 800x600!

32MB. I remember them well and how they seemed so powerful at the time, but they kind of make me laugh today. My desktop gamer has 32GB of internal RAM with room for expansion if desired and 16GB on the GPU itself.

The one thing I think the Bear-A-Byte PC could use, is some kind of custom voice-box. You could wire it into the power system so that whenever the pc is powered on or restarted, you hear a playful, bear-like roar.
