Duke Nukem 1+2 Remastered 30 Years Later! Evercade Collection Review

It's December! And while that usually means Christmas LGR things, these two Duke Nukem Evercade Collection cartridges were just released and there was no way I was gonna miss out on covering remasters of some of my favorite games. Especially since I got to be involved in their creation, just a little bit at least!

I'm glad they put in actual effort and made proper remasters and ports, but I don't understand who this product is aimed at. The first two Duke Nukem games were never released on anything other than PC and Mac, who gets nostalgic from playing them with a NES style controller? And why put in the effort of porting the console exclusives to Linux just to make them console exclusives again?
They didn't want to make another emulator box that will inevitably end up on a landfill once it fails but from a practical point of view it's essentially the same thing, even if they do end up getting ported to PC. ported BACK to PC, I mean.

Got an evercade last year and like it a lot. Have to be honest, kinda forgot I had it for most of this year, but picked it up again recently and its really special. If you're looking for more to play I recomend a lot of the inide carts. Morphcat has one of my favorite games on it, Micro Mages, the indie collections while mixed in quality are both very interesting at the least and the duel carts are also often a good pick up. I'm also partial to the first Piko home console collection for its imports of obscure but interesting games.

So many happy memories playing Duke Nukem over the years. I first played it on shareware from the demo disc included with _Computer Shopper_ magazine in 1996 then got the full game later. Duke Nukem 1 & 2 were included along with several Apogee/3D Realms demos and I played them almost as extensively as the full game.
I'm glad to see the original platformers get a proper remake and it's really good that you have a contributor credit.

i remember playing Duke 3d over my 56k modem with my best friend who lived across the freeway. it was just a 2 player deathmatch, but i figured out that you could type in /r or /p (i forget which) after duke3d. exe and if you pressed the corresponding button you could see what the other player was seeing as switch back at your leisure. it took him about 10 games before he realized i was cheating LMFAO

I get the licencing issue with the PC version, but the Saturn version played better and kept a smoother framerate than the PlayStation one. Why not licence that? Duke 3D is the marquee title of any Duke Nukem compilation, that's the one people are going to want to play the most. Putting all that effort into the DOS games and the spin-offs then half-assing the main event feels like a very weird move.

The changed soda cans kind of ruin the whole experience and the added music really wasn t needed. If you approach these red bouncing balls you need to get the timing right (using the sound) to walk underneath them and music would probably make that way more challenging. Hopefully now the engine is available for the first game, some new episodes can be made.

Yeah, no. This exclusive is just so they can sell more consoles. 99% of people interested in this aren't going to buy an Evercade to play these, if they don't already have one.
I own a ton of consoles; but, am of the mindset that, if there isn't a PC version of it, it's almost certainly not worth the exclusivity elsewhere to actually sit down and play it.

Platform exclusivity on this collection sucks, big time. I can't stand handhelds and these versions being stuck on one niche one hurts my Duke loving soul.
Also I have to say, not fan of the shafting of Bobby Prince. We all know this is Randy's doing (he tried to shaft Bobby with the previous D3D release but was handed a lawsuit for it.

Man, that first Duke game takes me back. I used to play that on my grandfather's PC that ran on an OS called GEOS. Typing in DUKE1. EXE, then spending hours just wandering around the levels shooting stuff was always a good time. This game, along with Commander Keen, Cosmos, and Captain Comic were some of my earliest PC gaming memories

Cheers for the review, Clint! This was a really fun and exciting musical project to be a part of, especially with Lee Jackson's blessing to reimagine his DN3D music using AdLib synthesis.
Here's hoping that Bobby Prince's iconic music gets saved from licensing hell eventually.
Keep kickin' ass and chewing bubblegum!

I love the evercade ecosystem. I have about 40ish carts, the original handheld, the VS and the EXP. So many super rare and obscure games on relatively cheap carts. I'm amazed by the care and love Blaze have for them. There is a new budget version for about 60 euros of the handheld, totally recommend!

I'm just glad Steam didn't pull anything like Sony recently did and still gives access to delisted releases. I didn't play Duke 1 or 2 until after playing 3D, but I think at the time it was shareware or something. Not too many people were interested at the time in earlier games when 3D was all the rage.

I got my Atomic Edition last week. Duke Nukem 3D is kind of hard to play on a controller without an analog stick. The Duke Nukem 1+2 as well as Duke Nukem Land of Babes is fantastic though. I also got Goodboy Galaxy which right now seems to be an Evercade and GBA exclusive.
reply

LGR fantastic video as always - love to see these games getting some love. Technical note: if you aren't already aware, the video chapter for Land of the Babes is titled Duke Nukem: Zero Hour by mistake. Not that I don't wish Zero Hour was included here!

Duke Nuken 3d was the first game (along with command and conquer & warcraft) I remember playing multiplayer, back when you had to play over the phone by calling your friend. It is also my first experience with mods/extra content, getting new maps etc.

I just got my Evercade Atomic the other day. That's pretty cool you were involved with the Duke 1/2 re-release. Was it your idea to have the ability to switch to the original Duke 1/2 port with the select button? I thought that feature was awesome.
reply

I knew they fixed it but they apologize for the ai art on the beta cover art I saw ppl where mad because they where adamant it wasn't so because they weren't aware including blocking ppl and some said they changed it because ppl noticed

Very nice, I've been curious about the Evercade for a while so if I decide to get it I'd consider picking up this collection. I've played the 1st game when I was little and I definitely played That Time to Kill demo way more than I should!

Back in the day, I had elevated access to Apogee's BBS, sisters BF proving his worth. Dev and beta builds of everything they did, unfortunately long gone. Doing a much better job these days in terms of data preservation.
