Bizarre Ways Batman Kept His Identity A Secret Chris: I mean there are the many times Batman had his secret identity found by Dr. Strange (aka Professor Hugo Strange, a villain so obsessed with Batman his goal is to use his identity to ruin Batman's life and then usurp the throne if you will. Strange tricks Bruce Wayne to going to a psychology session (with Strange as the psychiatrist) and tries to kill him. Bruce escapes becomes Batman and ties up Strange (to which the latter claims this proves Bruce Wayne is Batman. Batman ignores him gets into the Batmobile (with Nightwing and Robin watching from a distance) when the Batmobile explodes.
Nightwing is furious at Strange but (surprise, surprise) Bruce is not dead. Except there is one problem, Bruce does not remember anything about Batman, anything, even is shocked when he sees the Batcave under Wayne Manor causing Nightwing and Robin to believe Batman is truly dead. Things go even worse when Bruce Wayne is kidnapped by Hugo Strange (dressed in a Batman costume. The two are caught in order to Stranges lair and are tortured to admit Batman is Bruce Wayne but both agree Bruce Wayne is not Batman.
This infuriates Strange who decides to do a test and has Nightwing and Robin and Bruce in the same room and has his men fire on the count of three. Strange figures Bruce (as Batman) would save his partners. But when his men fire, Nightwing and Robin dodge and take the men out while Bruce hides behind a column. Shocked, Strange in his costume asks if Bruce is Batman to which Bruce replies he believed Strange was Batman. Strange now believes he killed Batman (except in his mind he is Batman, but he killed Batman, except he is Batman, etc) causing Strange to suffer a mental breakdown.
Back in the Batcave, Bruce is getting his wounds treated with Nightwing trying to convince Bruce hes Batman and says one of Bruces quotes on crime. Bruce suddenly in his Batman voice thanks Dick explaining that he had installed a post-hypnotic suggestion in his psyche in order to cause him to have amnesia after he got out of the Batmobile and the Batsuit. The quote was a trigger phrase that Batman was certain Dick would say. He did this knowing not only would it protect his secret identity but defeat Hugo Strange. Dick and Robin comment that this was clever and manipulative and quite scary at some points. Batman responds that Bruce Wayne was merely a shell that none of them had any relationship with and finally says, And frankly, neither do I.

Something I've always wondered, In the 'Knightfall' story, Bane deduces that Bruce Wayne is Batman & he shares this with 'Bird', 'Zombie' & 'Trogg' - his cronies, while they all sit on a rooftop watching Bruce, now if I remember right, Batman defeats each of them in turn, Bird being the last one before he 'fights' Bane & while fighting Bird, Bird mocks him for his boogeyman act' & how he once used to be so full of fear & respect for Batman & now just thinks he's pathetic now he knows his identity but, given that each of these henchmen are alive after their encounters with him & they all KNOW Batman & Bruce are one & the same. why didn't ANY of them tell anyone or try to go public with this info? lol if it was me, I'd be telling everyone in the criminal underworld, the press or anyone else for that matter who would listen! - it's not like Bane forbade any of them to reveal it to anyone else, I mean whoever they told might not believe you sure, but it's worth a try!
Also, after Bane breaks Batmans back & takes him to that rooftop overlooking central Gotham to throw him off - wouldn't a further way of shaming him & ultimately defeating him - without actually killing him, be, to unmask him THEN throw him off the roof? then it wouldn't matter if Alfred & co got there in the ambulance to save him because everyone there would've gotten a pretty good look at the broken & UNMASKED Batman!

Now, you're not fair to Riddler, here. Riddler's main shtick is that HE must prove that HE is more intelligent than Batman. Figuring out Batman's secret just proved that TO Riddler. BUT, if Riddler lets out that he knows, a) Riddler will be target one for all the criminals and b) Ra's al Ghul will find out, and Riddler used the Lazarus Pit without Ra's knowing. The dialogue makes this clear: If Ra's finds out, he will NOT be happy, and Ra's still controls the League of Assassins.
In the end, Riddler's more in danger if the secret gets out than if he keeps it. Batman knows this, and he just gave Riddler a terror attack.
Giving him amnesia later is taking the easy way out. Riddler worked better knowing the secret (and not being able to tell) than returning things to the status quo.

it's pretty worthless to solve a riddle if nobody else knows you done it that's a lie, plenty of people enjoy just reading riddles to figure out the answer just because they think it's fun, no need to share it, and, in fact, it's even better if you know the answer but nobody else does! makes you feel smarter than the others and Riddler is ALL ABOUT him feeling smarter. than the others. The comic is right, Nygma wouldn't let the opportunity of knowing an answer to a riddle nobody else knows, the feeling of mental superiority is far better than any other reward for him.

Personally I think all of Gotham knows who he is, but hey, poor guy's been through a lot so they just go with it to humour him.
But one day he'll save someone who says Thanks Mr Wayne! I mean. Batman! Thanks Batman! And that'll be it for him, he'll go into years of therapy over finding out that everyone knew.

Kal-El keeping his Clark Kent Superman duality separate is easy. A CEO of a multi billion dollar company (probably an international company) moonlighting as a bar themed vigilante is much harder to pull off. Seriously how come nobody has wondered were all those millions disappear too!

The Riddler also figured out Batman's secret identity in Batman Forever.
But thankfully to that mind sucking machine that Edward Nygma (The Riddler) had invented, which also eventually turned him crazy, the secret was safe.

You forgot that he disguises his voice as Batman. This means that Bruce Wayne and Batman don't have the same voice, which can make it a bit harder to connect the dots. So why was that left out? It's kind of important.

Nothing compared to the idiotic ways Superman kept his secret. Once he convinced a reporter that he switched his identity every few days to avoid any investigation. Another time he became a British DJ calling himself Clark the K!
reply

For Riddler forgot to mention that he was dying of cancer and snuck into one of Raas' Lazarus Pits to save himself, and Batman told Riddler he'd basically turn him over to Raas if Riddler ever talked about his identity.
