Must-Watch Sci-Fi Movies With Bad Rotten Tomatoes Scores Samuel: I like Jupiter Ascending as a science fiction spectacle and an exercise in world (universe) building. But it IS terribly flawed. However, I don't think it's flaws lie in doing too much. There are two very simple things that, in hind sight, could have been changed and the film would have been MUCH better. 1) Casting Mila and Channing were mistakes. If almost ANYONE else had been the leads, JA would have been a far better movie. I understand that they were the it people at that time for whatever reason, but Mila has NEVER been what you could consider a good actress. She's pretty. and that's always been about it. The best film she's been in to date was The Book of Eli and I'm willing to bet nobody remembers her being there. And Channing is just. Channing. His comedic timing is fairly good, but he's not a good dramatic/action lead. Like Kunis, he's good looking and he can dance but that's always been about it outside of comedy. 2) Having the hero save a helpless damsel captured by the enemy has become a very tired and outdated trope in Hollywood. And not only did they do it once in JA. they did it THREE TIMES! Mila's character character description could have literally been damsel in distress. She didn't even attempt to fight these situations until the final confrontation. She walked almost willingly into evil men's hands. THREE TIMES! It was bad writing. Especially coming from two people who should have known better than most; men who themselves wished to become women. You'd think that they'd want to do better by the female demographic. If these two things had been different, Jupiter Ascending would have been a very different film and I believe that it would have been much better received.
And while it's an unpopular opinion. I actually really enjoyed Eddie Redmayne's evil, slimy portrayal. Whisper voice and all.

Speed Racer was terrible. I don't think I even got through 30 minutes of it before I just had to turn it off. It made zero sense, and the cartoon like action just didn't work.
Masters of the Universe was also not really worth watching, and that's coming from 10 year old me, who was a fan of the cartoon, the movie just didn't make sense in a He-Man tie in movie.
Most of the rest of the movies on this list are worth watching though.

. I have Howard the Duck, but I will never watch it. Ever. However. I did enjoy The Last Action Hero, Jupiter Ascending was a fun way to lose a few hours and. even though I've never seen it, the rest of my family loves Speed Racer. I think you've just got to watch movies for yourself, and not listen to critics or ratings. Well. except for maybe in the case of the 2014 Fantastic Four movie - that was a pile of shite.

Some of these movies are funny to watch, entertaining or nice. but a funny/nice/entertaining movie is not necessarily a must-watch, no.
I usually don't pay attention at all to critic web pages (their scores may change over time. a sign of their scores' subjective nature. I'd rather watch individual reviewers (the more informal, the better, and still have my very own opinion about a movie.

Looper and Rotten Tomatoes. Both sites have some horrible reviews. Event Horizon was amazing, Last Action Hero was hilarious. He-Man actually had great effects for an movie from 87' with a young Rob Mcneill (ST's Tom Paris, Courtney Cox and Frank played Skeletor pretty good. Howard the Duck had Leah Thompson, and she was a cutie through and through.

The trouble with RT is aggregates mostly on US version and reviews, so some films which are cut to ribbons to get a rating get low numbers. But on the rest of the world you get a better film. Feardotcom is the perfect example the US version to get an R major plot points were cut, the UK version gets an 18 rating uncut and is an awesome film.

I love Howard the duck, but it kinda feels like a made for tv movie. Like it wants to be a longer, but it's constrained for time. I honestly think if the movie was a little bit longer and they either played up the seriousness or played up the comedy it would be a real classic. Instead they try to do both and it doesn't do either well.

I have a major beef with Speed Racer. Not gonna give it the time of day. They passed over the opportunity to remake Logan's Run (being true to the book this time. I (and many others) have been waiting DECADES for it! It's been passed from studio to studio for years. Someone is missing out on a sure-fire hit - IF they do it right.

Speed Rac-
NOPE! I'm going to have to stop you right there. Speed Racer was terrible. When it hit Netflix on streaming my family tried giving it a watch, but it was so Glob awful that we couldn't even finish the darn thing. Every terrible thing people say about it is well deserved. Hands down.

Movie reviewers now give high scores to movies like Star Wars and comic book movies because they're afraid of the fan backlash, and they want to keep getting invited to media events. There's only one way to explain why TLJ still has a 91% RT score. That movie is worse than The Room.
