Leto's Joker is more comicy than Phoenix's, so I think for a more serious movie like this Phoenix is the right choice. But for a more Marvel-Like movie (e. g. Suicide Squad) I think Leto would be the better choice. Also it is never really stated that Phoenix's Joker (Arthur so and so) is THE actual Joker from the Batman movies. So they could very well exist in the same universe.

In the Killing Joke comic which heavily influenced Phoenix's Joker movie, at first there's a fake Joker, a gullible sap in makeup merely being used as a pawn by the real Joker who had already escaped. Leto wouldn't even be good enough to play that fake Joker.

Jared didn't take the role seriously and commit. He was just out to get some screen time and try to take the joker throne for himself, believing he should be the only one to play Joker. Hence the jealousy over Phoenix's role.

Jared Letos joker was utter crap and silly but Joaquin Phoenixs joker is pure genius and shows the torment in a guy that society let's down and simply destroys too. Jared Leto put a smile on that face and be happy!

Im sorry but Letos version of Joker is not nearly as good as with Phoenix. Letos performance was way too over the top. Too much. Wasnt controlled. Like with Phoenix.
