Why David Lynch's Dune Bombed At The Box Office

An overwhelmingly confusing story? Jarring special effects? Or just a studio too afraid to market it? Here's why David Lynch's Dune became a certified box office bomb. DarkLorde: The theatrical cut of the Dune 1984 was understandably confusing. I mean they cut out whole scenes that made following scenes make sense just because it was considered to be too long. Having seen the extended cut of the movie I have to say that it would have been a bigger success and probably enjoyed far more by everyone.

I saw Dune when I was 17 or so in the late 80's on home video and I didn't understand much of it. I'd never read the books before this either, so I had no expectations. It was confusing and weird. The spacing guide blobs and all that. Now though as an adult, I watch this movie each time I see that its on. I generally am not a fan of Lynch's other works, but this movie I now really enjoy. I needed to mature and expand my horizons in what I read and experienced to be able to get this movie. I think that may also may have been a factor. General audiences didn't get it, and some Dune book readers thought it strayed too far from the novels. It is however, a great movie IMHO.

Lynch's Dune was a masterpieces and just those useless critics and especilly those that call this work often ruin alot of stuff. Since often those people dont go with time and have a strict view how a movie should be. but they are always wrong. since noone can judge a movie or else for ever one!

I realised quite early that it is the production design, costumes, models etc that I enjoy with films(I couldn't care less about the story in Star Wars. Dune has outstanding production design and great costumes on the whole. the affects are not that great but still a visual feast.

I first watched Lynch's Dune in 1984 at a movie theater in London's Leicester Square where it was screened in two parts. Loved it, warts-and-all! Have rewatched it many times.

I loved it. The cast was great. Most of the book's highlight were in it. Some of it could have extended the scenes a bit more for clarity. Overall a great film.

I honestly couldnt get passed the abysmal shield cgi, other then that i was intrigued but the terrible cgi for the full body shield just drove me nuts lol

I tried watching the original Dune. Ohhhh, is the acting horrible. The technologies to make good special effects weren't available at that time.

Dune bombed because it is actually crap - yes, people get all nostalgic and whatnot. But when it boils down to it Dune is a bad film.
