I hate that she wouldn't have been able to do. stuff. It's patently untrue. MARY POPPINS was finished shooting before MY FAIR LAY even began. And MY FAIR LADY was finished shooting before a single frame of THE SOUND OF MUSIC was shot, so she could have done all three. What she would have had to give up, however, was the title role in THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY, which was shooting at the same time as MY FAIR LADY. That role would have been terrific for Audrey Hepburn. It would have deprived us of the non-musical Julie giving a very deft tragicomic performance and she would have missed out on a very key professional relationship with her co-star James Garner.

Pamela P. L. Travers (aka Helen Goff) was a living nightmare, according to lyricist and composers Richard and Robert Sherman; her miserable attitude was severely toned down for Saving Mr. Banks.
My mom always told me that Walt Disney did the voice for the umbrella.
A bunch of men dressed in drag were the prospective nannies lined up outside the Banks home.

Speaking as someone who was 6 years in 1964 when that movie was new i can tell you that Dick Van Dyke's accent made no difference to me at all! It was a children's movie and I've spoken with people who were children in the UK when the film first came out and they agreed - kids aren't critical of accents - it's the magic. And Mary Poppins HAD IT!

Another few things I heard about this movie is that Julie Andrews didn't take the film at first because it was too similar to The Sound of Music (a movie she did prior I think) and Angela Lansbury was considered for the role of Mary Poppins too I think. Even think even Audrey Hepburn was considered for Mary Poppins.

Travers eventually warmed up to the movie after seeing it again in the 1980s. She even signed off for a musical as long as it had no involvement with the film or used American actors. After Travers' death Disney was able to get involved and began workshopping in the early 2000s.

You know what's funny? I am from India and am watching this video about a British character while doing my History work, writing about India in 1870's to 1947. :-) Mary Poppins is amazing though. I love her She's practically perfect in every way

dick can't dance the julie almost didnn't take on the role wow that's just wow grew up with this movie but dick's dancing sure looked like he could but someone else doing the nanny without andrews most shocking right there
reply

I'm surprised there even is a sequel after what happened between Disney and Travers. I would have figured that Travers filed some sort of suit that would have banned any other Disney representations of her work.
reply

both are wonderfull films and im glad it didn't ruin the first films magic I enjoy the first classic more but it was well done very colorful and Emily Blunt was great and of course Dick van dyck was amazing
reply

Wow. l. David Tomlinson (Mr. Banks, cameo as Umbrella) did other characters, ytoo. can you imagine that (or that the sequel with L. M. Miranda and Emily Blunt and the three new kids is now nearly htree years old

Fun fact(I saw online): As you said the author of the book hated the movie so much that she banned them from making any type of sequal to it. they waited for her to die so they can make Mary Poppins Returns

Watch the original version and make your judgment. That laughing and floating scene only on the original was so contagiously amusing to many viewers and certainly good lasting healthy effect when I laugh too.
reply

Love the original Mary. Poppins, Julie Andrews was flawless, from acting to singing interacting with the puppets she made them look real! I love her speaking voice from being sweet to stern, I just love her
reply

Even though I liked the old movie, especially the music and the dancing penguins scene, I found Marry Poppins fairly arrogant or snooty as a character. She always just rubbed me the wrong way.
reply

I'm looking forward to seeing the remake or sequel but there will never be anything better than the beautiful and talented Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. No disrespect intended to the new cast.
reply

Honestly, Audrey was perfect for My Fair Lady as was Julie for Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and all her glorious films and recordings. Your gifts are much appreciated.
reply

Mary is not a witch or time traveler. She is some sort of guardian angel. She sings about the saints and apostles smiling down on caring humans. That explains it.
reply

Only a few words: It's practically perfect in every way, in fact, it's so practically perfect, that you could call it supercalifradgilisticexpialidocious.
reply

Has anyone ever read Mary Poppins? She's actually really really horrible. She's the perfect example of a narcissist played as being something fanciful.
reply

According to Saving Mr. Banks, Travers didn't hate the movie itself but she hated the idea of the movie and all the things Disney was suggesting.
reply

Anybody seen MARY POPPINS RETURNS or the Broadway music(I'

Why if left out one interesting fact. Apparently Julie Andrews like this sweater one hell of a lot. And that to almost cost her the role.
reply

One of my favorite scenes was when Burt drew scenes on the sidewalk and then they traveled through it for an unexpected great advefure.
reply

I do like what Bert says at the end of the movie Goodbye, Mary Poppins, don't stay away too long, It took her over 50 years to come back
reply

Saw Mary Poppins Returns, and while it was great, there werent any memorable songs in the sequel. Emily Blunt did a great job though.
reply

Tht 1964 modest budget was by today's standards typical Disney IMMENSEBE BUDGET! Just as immense as everything aboutg the magic
reply

Jane and Michael were never told about the surprises that they saw. Their dumbfounded looks and shrieks were real and not staged
