HOW THE HELL IS THE PHANTOM NOT ON THIS LIST! How is Evan Hansen the hardest male lead? I know its vocally demanding, but to play the role as the Phantom, you need to know opera! My family friend goes to one of the best colleges in the US for Opera! I know that the Phantom is not in the show a whole lot, but heres so things that is hard about it.
Phantom:
1. Singing Opera
2. Running around the stage to get places from places
3. Costume changes!
4. THE MAKEUP FOR IT! They have to put prosthetics on the actor to make his face deformed
5. A lot of yelling and screaming
6. It's like number 2 but doing all these tricks on the stage like with the pyrotechnic effects
7. VOCALLY DEMANDING!
Now Evan Hansen:
1. Vocally Demanding
2. Acting has to be dramatic
3. The cast? No it's not that bad
PHANOM IS HARDER! THANK YOU!

Not any mention of Hunchback of Notre Dame's Quasimodo? Well, it's not that hard when you're only taking the American version into account, but the original German run was incredibly challenging, requiring a range from a Bb2 to a C5, as well as incredible dynamic control on that high C, as you wear required to start quiet before crescendoing to a massive belt.

I'm gonna partially defend this
I think Evan Hansen is probably the hardest role on this list from an acting/emotional standpoint, as playing a role like that 8x a week could easily break someone. However, I wouldn't say it's number 1 for singing. It's definitely a demanding role vocally, but there are harder roles out there.

D isnt that good for anyone except me so to anger all people inhales FREEZE UR BRAIN SHATTER UR SKULL FIGHT PAIN WITH MORE PAIN FORGET WHO YOU ARE UNBURDEN UR LOAD FORGET IN SIX WEEKS YOULL BE BACK ON THE ROAD WHEN THE VOICE IN UR HEAD SAYS UR BETTER OF DEAD DONT OPEN A VEIN, there done

I have some of your Broadway stocks incorrect George Shron was not the original Sweeney Todd it was Len Ciru Yeah my spelling city correct there are many people live and die flashlight babysit else so anything incorrect is Charlie I do appreciate that you highlight Broadway musicals however

I think that Bobby Strong from Urinetown is a very underrated character. The vocals are very demanding (He has to hit two C5s in one song) and his personality is much deeper than people realize. Not sure if he should be in the top ten, but at least an honorable mention.

I think Jake Kelly from Newsies should have been on the list, considering that it's often referred to the male version of Elphaba. All of the actors that played him have mentioned that playing Jack throughout even a single performance is like running a marathon.

I can do a pretty good impression of Daveed Diggs Thomas and Lafayette role. It took me a few months to get the voices down but strange enough I'm a female. I don't think it's impossible to do for a female but it just surprised me that I could it.

Dear Evan Hansenyou also have to be able to sing while you are crying, your nose is running and mucus is sliding down the back of your throat. Thatsa feat. Good #1 pick. Some of the other picks are okay but wheres Phantom?
reply

Jean Valjean should clearly be #1. Evan Hansen doesnt even come close to the flexibility and intensity that Valjean does. Also I think Quasimodo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame Should be second on the list after Valjean.

Am I the only one who wants to see Ryan McCartan(he played Hans in Frozen) play Jekyll/Hyde? He's very VERY young, but I feel like he could one day be the youngest actor to play Jekyll/Hyde professionally.

Judas Iscariot & Billy Elliot should be in Top 5 easily. And granted the role has no singing, but in my personal history: Eddie in Movin' Out (the John Selya part) was off the scale in impressive/demanding roles.

When it comes to hard male roles, I think Beetlejuice and Angel (Rent) just require such unique voices. Also, Hadestown, imo, was casted fantastically, and both Orpheus and Hades require really odd ranges.
reply

Why did you do such an amazing job women on Broadway, that I loved so I came here next, only to be so be disappointed. Taking back my subscript and follow when it's going to be seen and felt by you.
reply

I'd be curious to know why Billy Elliot isn't on this list. Or at least an honorable mention. It would be a tough role for an adult. For a child it's mind boggling.
reply

Hedwig needs to be higher. The person in that role has to _singlehandedly_ carry the show for the whole performance, with no breaks in between!
reply

I think Frankie Valli from jersey boys because of the huge vocal range and secondly Joe Casey from Our house because of all the costume changes
reply

The phantom form phantom at the opera should be on this list. The fact that the role isnt even an honorable mention makes me cringe.
reply

Me: Watches video
Video: ends
Me: wHeRe iS tHe PhAnTom
Also me: Throws iPad across the room cuz phantom not in the vid

reply

Im surprised Elder Price isnt on here. I find him super vocally demanding. And the acting needs to be spot on too.
reply

Honestly Im glad that Donny Novitski was on it even just in honourable mentions because bandstand is SO UNDERRATED
reply

i feel like inventing rap should give the major general from the pirates of penzance an intro nod or a 1 off exclusion
reply

Aaahhhhemmm, I believe you left out the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera. Therefore, this list is inaccurate.
reply

What about Clyde Barrow? His singing parts are insane! He's one of my favourite male characters in musicals
reply

I think Angel from Rent should be on here because of the combination of singing, dancing, and drumming
reply

I heard that the Phantom's character is somewhat easy because some of his parts were tracked.
