We owe these ladies so much. For this list, were taking a look at the women who showed the most agency in their various films, and were truly heroes in their own stories not mere plot devices or love interests. The characters here are all from 80s films, but it doesnt have to be the heroines first appearance in a franchise. Furthermore, only live action heroines will be seen here. Our list includes Wendy Torrance, Dian Fossey, Marion Ravenwood, Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, and more! Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the Top 10 Movie Heroines of the 1980s. 10. Wendy Torrance 9. Dian Fossey 8. Beth Horman 7. Zula 6. Nancy Thompson 5. Tess McGill 4. Marion Ravenwood 3, 2 & 1?

Wendy Torrance is a great female heroine, however the movie adaption never really did her justice and its easy to see why with Kubrick's version and why King hated it so much.
Book Wendy: a strong mother and feminist figure, who carries a deep seeded fear of becoming like her mother. While also threatening a divorce from her husband due to his past alcholism and abuse of their son danny. She's also deeply nurturing of his shining ability.
Film Wendy: A wallflower, a pushover and a crybaby. She's got no backbone and instead of supporting her husband or even so much as being the playful woman she is in the book. She acts like an abuse victim and lets Jack speak to her like utter shit. She has no idea about his ability and even treats him like its attention seeking or he's a problem child.

I think Alice Johnson from, Nightmare on Elm Street, parts 4 and 5 should also be on this list. I absolutely adore her transformation from shy wallflower to a strong, confident woman who kicked Freddie's butt not once, but twice.
And Nancy Thompson deserves to be in the Top 5. She is definitely more iconic and more heroic than Tess from, Working Girl.
My Top 5:
1. Princess Leia
2. Sarah Connor
3. Ellen Ripley
4. Nancy Thompson
5. Alice Johnson

Ellen Ripley should be the winner. She was the first lead badass female in a blockbuster movie and she made bigger impact than any other female from action films. I'd mention Joan Wilder (Romancing the Stone, Anne Lewis (Robocop, Adrian (Rocky series, Sheena (Sheena, Anna (Predator, Elvira (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Vicki Vale (Batman, Lois Lane (Superman series, Princess Vespa (Spaceballs, Elaine Dickinson (Airplane films) too

So for the Top 10 Iconic Movie Heroines of the 90s there was the criteria of the 90s has to be when they started being badass; characters like Sarah Connor span various decades
I guess there's not going to be a Top 10 Iconic Movie Heroines of the 70s then, since Leia and Ripley spanned back to the 70s?
Other than that, great list!

This is what anoys me when people say females are only just getting their due being badasses but there is loads of strong female characters throughout the decades and I find that female characters surrounded my male characters are often stronger as they can all hold their own in a room full of men

Ummm, Pinochet was Constitutionally appointed by the Chile Supreme Court. So it wasn't a coup at all. And in any case, those Marxists deserved to be dropped out of helicopters. Movies about that period of time reflects the ongoing love affair Hollywood has for Communist genocidal maniacs.

The best thing about Ripley is the fact that she proved her heroism not doing anything without any motives like Rey in new Star Wars franchise but doing what she really had to do. She became mother figure fore Newt and she had to do everything what it took to save her.

I was hoping to see Grace Law on this list. Intrepid lawyer helping women immigrate and trying to take down a kidnapping crime boss in her neighborhood. Such a sht disturber her guards have to tie her up as well as put her in a cage.

No one should forget how much Shelley Duvall had to suffer under the direction of Kubrick. He was a brilliant director and his approach might have gotten her to exceed casual acting but at the same time it was just inhumane.
reply

Ripley is the best, the most badass female ever shown on screen. Aliens franchise is geniusly great!
I would have switched 2 and 1 but just my opinion. They just both are really amazing! :)

Good list but I really think Ripley had more of an effect on the characters and the feminist movement in general than Laya did so I really think she should have gotten to top spot

_Honorable Mentions: Helen Slater's: _ 1984 Super Girl, 1985 Billie Jean Davy from The Legend of Billie Jean Mary Stuart Masterson, Watts in 1987 Some Kind of Wonderful

I love this list! I also feel that, rather like the main character from Working Girl, E. L. James lifted a quote directly off that movie into 50 shades darker.
reply

I was gonna complain that Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley didn't get 1st and 2nd but when Leia popped up I was like Ok I can totally live with that lol great job
reply

Princess Leia ahead of Ripley, are you serious there. She is great but come on Ripley is cinema's greatest movie heroine ever not just the 80s.
reply

Very very great list I like it a lot and a lot of fun too can you please do more videos like this one please you did a very great job mis mojo
reply

Sigourney's signature role was meant to be a male role but she made such an impression they changed it from Alan Ripley to Ellen Ripley
reply

Wow. I just realized that Fifty Shades poached Working Girl. I KNEW I'd heard those lines before and said more naturally
reply

So Sigurney Weaver plays two on this list and is the antagonist of a third (although in Working Girl I liked Joan Cusack better)
reply

Yes! I was thinking of Chris Parker, she got Honorable Mention! And Ripley! Should be #1 Will You Listen to me Parker! , SHUT UP!
reply

Damnit. I wanted to criticize y'all for not adding Princess Leia but she was number 1. Sure shut me up. Well played
reply

Karen Silkwood should've made the list somewhere, much more than that character in Working Girl. Just my opinion.
reply

Ms. Mojo. I get it came out in the 70s, but you should make one for the 1970s out of respect for Laurie Strode
reply

I don't know about putting Princess Leia before Ripley & Sarah (Connor. that just doesn't seem right.
