THEY KEEP GETTING IT WRONG!
1) Dot was not a demon. In the books she was a mundane adopted by a warlock and taught of the shadow world, who was then possessed by a demon in order to get the mortal cup. She was also not a friend of Jocelyns, she was a neighbour who she gifted the tarot card deck and who had no idea that was where the mortal cup is. In the show she was a warlock who was friends with Jocelyn and helped hide the mortal cup and Clary. Very different, but not the difference mojo points out.
2) The mortal cup is the same in both, in both most of those who drink from the mortal cup will die since most are not worthy, but some are worthy and survive drinking from the cup and become shadowhunters. In the show however it was not mentioned that most of the time only children could ascend as they were less likely to die.

Even if they're completely different, I absolutely love them both. (I'm only on book 3 right now) but the show is still my absolute favorite show. Though I gotta say something that should be on this list is Max's death. I didn't care much for his character since he didn't have that big of a role in the books or the show, but I was still blindsided by his death. I'd watched the show religiously since it first aired, and followed every new episode. Only recently did I get around to reading the books, and I was shocked that he was killed.
Though I understand why they didn't kill him in the show. TV doesn't seem keen on showing kids dying, and I've really only seen it happen on The Walking Dead lmao

I always enjoy YA books but I tried to love MI books and I just didnt. I do plan on giving them a second run because while I didnt love them they were far from being as awful as when I tried to read the vampire diary books.
The show aging the characters up was the right decision. Clary in the book was annoying but show clary was also kind of annoying at first as well. The show had all the pieces to be so much better but being on Freeform hurt it i think. I would have loved more focus with Luke and Jocelyn along with the other characters.

The fact that they don't need to name an angel when they use seraph blades, the fact that they don't need to draw new runes when they already have the one, the fact that in the book Dot isn't a warlock. In the books, Inquisitor Herondale isn't killed by Jace and she doesn't know that he is Herondale until the end, the fact that Alec actually goes to Camille to try and see if she can take away Magnus's immortality, the fact that Simon eventually becomes a mundane again and a shadow hunter. BLACKTHORNS. THE ENDARKENED

Actually, Caterina is blue, but she is using a glamour to appear normal. When Lilith disrupted the magic at Magnus's apartment in season 3, his cat eyes showed, and so did her blue skin. She makes herself appear normal because she works at a hospital, and she cant have mundanes seeing her blue skin. I dont know why Ragnor does not have green skin. He may also be hiding it to keep suspicion from arousing, but if that is the case, why not hide his horns too? But yeah, Caterina does have blue skin.

Freaking hell. Madame Dorothea wasn't evil. She was the human adopted daughter of a witch. And in the middle of the first book, was killed and possessed by a demon.
And the mortal cup can be used to turn humans into Shadowhunters, but when they aren't children, it's very possible that they don't survive it. That's all. Lol.
Also. Please don't say you're comparing books and tv show, when you're really comparing movie and tv show. Cause the Movie is nothing like the books. Thanks.

I really didn't mind the changes to Luke i thought it was really cool and I looooove Isaiah Mustafa he did so well. My problem was they really messed up the ending and strayed waaay to far from the original plot. Who cares about Katarina and Ragnor's colors like that doesn't matter, what I didn't like was how much they changed with Sebastian Clary and Jace's dynamics. I had hope for the show after the first season and second but they really messed up with the third: /

Ok Im sorry but how are they saying Simon became a vampire and also the girl who plays Maureen looks more like Mia and still would have made sense. I have obviously not watched the show but I have read the book series 3 times over and this kinda hurts I watched this video to see if the show would be worth watching. Did the director and screenwriter not even skim the books. I thought the movie was bad but this hurts me

okay, one thing i want to say about lydia branwell is, even if shes not in the books, her name comes from them, and its referenced. at some point, someone says that lydia and clary are cousins. theyre not, but they do share some blood, as henry branwell married charlotte fairchild. theyre the fairchild part of the lineage and lydia probably descends from henrys family, maybe his sibling or cousin

So heres my issue I just found out that Izzy and Clary ask each other to be parabati, BUT if they are 18 then they cant because that ruin is the only man made ruin and does not work on shadow hunters in adulthood and has to be established by age 18. So while giving the age range a boost with actors also messed with something canonically important in both books and TV show.

They just made a tv show for high school teenagers, with very goodlooking people but that's all. They didn't respect anything of the whole world of the shadowhunters and that's a shame because many people grew old reading all the books. I'm sorry but Alec's eyes color is super important to notice, especially when you read the Infernal Devices.

I can name sooooo many more differences, like how the TID characters or TDA characters never appeared. Like how Ragnor Fell isnt actually dead, and how Alec and Maryse has blue eyes, Izzy and Robert has green eyes. I can say a lot more. Most importantly, there's more malec in the books because Cassandra Clare is writing a whole series for them

I could never imagine Alec from the book rushing into a marriage with a woman. Like, EVER!
In the book, Alec is this anime-style shy introvert emo boy who has a crush on Jace and spits venom at Clary. In the series, they made him into this hunky stud, downright outshining Jace, who was supposed to be the alpha. They totally missed the mark.

I think the biggest change in the tv show is Jace. The actor, even though hes not that bad, looks nothing like the Jace in the books. You guys said the age of the main characters and youre right, it was a good change. But Jace. the actor in the movie (Jamie Campbell Bower) looks way more like Jace. The TV show shouldve brought him.

One of the smaller but important changes which pissed me off was that in the Tv show Clary kills Valentine, while in the books it's Raziel. I know Clary changes the rune on the summoning circle for her to be the one who is Raziel bound, but it was also Heavenly Punishment for the one who thinks he is the most holy man.

also lydia branwell would never have existed. charlotte was forced to reclaim her maiden name fairchild because henrys family didnt like that she was the first female consul and matthews last name is fairchild. so all his kids would bear his last name and the branwell name dies with henry. lydia branwell wouldnt exist

the biggest problem i have with the show is the complete change on the characters, especially alec. hes one of my favorite characters, and the show just completely flattened his character arc. jace is too serious, clary is too whiny, magnus is also too serious and just has the wrong vibe, and just ugh

i have a question: If you consider the books and the show completely different things, when you read the books do you have your own versions of the characters (eg. when reading an Alec scene do you imagine matthew dadario moving or do you see someone you have created)?

Also the fact that there's not supposed to be any mundane technology in Institutes. And yet there's an ENTIRE high-tech room in the tv show version of the Institute? There's so many issues I have with how much the show changed honestly I can't even BEGIN to list them

I wanted to like the show but I think they diverted so much, killing off Jocelyn was like the last draw for me so I never watched past that. I still wished the first movie had been more successful so we could have had a closer adaptation to the rest of the books.

Why is Clary loosing her virginity to SIMON not to Jace didnt get into the list? That was the second thing that pissed me off (first was Jocelyn's death, and when i heard spilers about the ending, i didnt even watch the last episode. This was way too much.

No it is not true that a mortal will die if they drink from the mortal cup. There is a chance they could die yes, but if they train well they have a higher chance of survival and will become a shadowhunter. Simon literally becomes a shadowhunter lol.

Sorry but i think i'm the only one that thinks they made the movie and tv show so poorly. The books are so amazing i expected movie series as big as twilight or even bigger. they've killed the storyline for me with the movie and tv show.

I watched the series and couldn't stop myself from continuing it only for Malec. I am yet to read the books. And the comment section is scaring me. Can anyone tell me, should I read the books if I am a legit Malec addict? I am scared!

Wrong about the Mortal Cup. In the show it was clearly stated that the cup will turn mortals to shadowhunters but not everyone survives the process. In the video it sounds like that every mortal who drinks will die.
