Matthew Broderick and Molly Ringwald were going to star in another John Hughes movie in 1987 called Oil and Vinegar. The plot was about a conservative salesman (Broderick) travelling across the country on the way to his wedding when he picks up a 'rough and tumble' New Wave Rock'n Roll hitchhiker (Ringwald) and the movie would have followed the car ride as the two discussed their lives to each other and their fears for entering into adulthood during the car ride and later in a motel room as they stayed the night.
Apparently the two characters were going to be polar opposites of one another. It sounds like Broderick would have played a character that seemed to have life 'figured out' and had a plan in place for the future (i. e marriage, high paying job, house, kids etc) whereas it seems Molly may have played a more rebellious character who lived life spontaneously and 'in the moment' thereby not having an idea of where her future would be headed. It sounds like the resolution of the movie would have involved a reconciliation between the two approaches of life and both characters realizing that they would benefit from adopting a little of the other character's approach to life.
As I am typing this comment out, it seems to me that Oil and Vinegar may have had a more melancholy and sombre tone than his other films if it had been made.
It is said that it was John Hughes' favourite script that he ever wrote and those few who have read have compared it very much to The Breakfast Club except with two characters instead of five and the premise was more intimate.
Unfortunately the movie was never made due to various seasons. The studio wanted rewrites but Hughes was not interested. After delays, Hughes gave the rights to direct Oil and Vinegar to Howard Deutch (who directed Pretty In Pink and Some Kind Of Wonderful) but Deutch passed on the opportunity because his girlfriend at the time (Lea Thompson) urged him not to overwork himself and also because Deutch wanted to venture out on his own as a filmmaker. Eventually Ringwald and Broderick ran into scheduling conflicts and had to make other films and the movie was never made.
It's a shame because it sounds like it could have been another potential John Hughes classic and it could have possibly rivalled The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off on this list and among his greatest work. I will always wonder what that movie could have been.

Weird science where Anthony Micheal hall gets drunk, beyond classic if there ever was a white dude that could play a black dude in a movie that scene proves he could pull it of not in the way he looks but in personality he was really great in that scene and if it weren't for john hughes we never would have seen how good that kid really was he was definitely underrated as an actor.
Then uncle buck definitely put john candy in a new light he could actually do some acting that wasnt in his type casting. John hughes a master in bringing out the angst of youth through film

I'm a '90's kid' and I adore watching Movies from the 1980's - especially John Hughes's films - his work has inspired me into screen-writing and directing. It's difficult to pick a favourite as they're all uniquely great in their own way - if I had to pick one, it'd have to be She's Having a Baby (1988) - the scene near the end of the film with Kate Bush's 'This Woman's Work' playing in the background - I was in tears, it was so well done.

Wow! This list is an absolute fail. I'm a high school teacher and I can say with absolute certainty that 'The Breakfast Club' has been adored by more students than those whom have ever heard of 'Ferris'. I saw it at the East Sprague Drive-In a couple of times during the summer of 1985 and I have had students talk about it every year since I entered public education in 1989. Additionally, 'Dutch' beats entries ten through six--hands down!

John Hughes - the pioneer of teen comedies/dramas. A man, in his 30s, understood teenage problems & showed them to the world. He introduced us with so many legendary characters & made us laugh. My favourite John Hughes movie? Well it's sort of hard to pick one. I'm stuck between Sixteen candles & the breakfast club.

I can watch Ferris Bueller's Day off anytime, any day, no matter how I am feeling. Every time the parade scene comes on, I can't help but smile and feel happy. I still love this movie after 30 years. John Hughes made some classics, but Ferris Bueller will always be in my heart as a masterpiece.

Some of his family comedies are kinda cartoonish when it comes to dealing with physics. Especially since other films after Home Alone had the villains being subjected to fatal injuries that are played straight out of a Chuck Jones cartoonish.

Agree with the top 2 for sure, but SKoW is a better movie than PiP. The latter is a love triangle where both options are terrible. SKoW reverses that and both options are great, making Keith's choice and decision much more meaningful.

Please get John Hughes a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! He deserves it. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have The Fault In Our Stars or Riverdale or 13 Reasons Why.

I'd have loved it if John Hughes made more movies like his teen movies or Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I feel Home Alone and Dutch caused him to lose that streak.

She's Having A Baby doesn't get enough credit as a mature John Hughes comedy on men and women in a marriage. I personally would replace Uncle Buck with this one.

When I told my mother that John Hughes passed, we were both very sad. My mom has passed now, too, but I will always remember so many of these great movies.

It is not possible to rate many of Hughes' films, just way too good. Many of them should be officially listed as national treasures.

I have never understood the appeal of the brat pack teen movies that seem to define John Hughes career but women over 50 seem to enjoy them.

How could you not include 101 Dalmatians on this list? You could've had it as an honorable mention and I would've been fine with that
