It's a great film, but what's the true story behind Ma Rainey's Black Bottom? In this video, we look over her life. What did YOU think of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom?

Viola Davis MADE this film! She was the heart and soul of this film!
Awesome tribute, but. THIS 'NARRATOR VOICE' IS URKSOME! Her voice and mispronounciations are ethnicity insensitive. WHY was this GENERIC VOICE chosen for THIS piece! MA RAINEY was an historic African American pioneer. The sound of this choice was not right at all, for this piece! That's what I said, and I'm sticking to it!

Here's a fun fact, the first narrator for this movie, at 0: 13 in this video, Glynn Turman, was the first actor cast to be Han Solo by George Lucas for Star Wars. But, 20th Century Fox Executives, in 1976 did not want a black lead. So, George Lucas was forced to recast the role of Han Solo.

One glaring mistake in Glynn Turman's introduction. Paramount Records was NOT in Chicago. It was in Port Washington, Wisconsin and produced about 25% of all race records during this period. The play can be forgiven for taking liberties, a documentary cannot.

Why in the name of all that is holy was it necessary to make Viola Davis look like a hot greasy mess with eye makeup running down her face like shed been in a prizefight or crying uncontrollably for three days straight? Completely uncalled for.

Oh yall gonna hate me. Sorry. I didn't see Ma Rainy. I saw Viola Davis playing dress up. the praise comes from the desperation of the studios to award people of color. I couldn't even get through the horrible performance
reply

I think the play is largely male-oriented and focused more on the character played by Chadwick Boseman than on Ma Rainey. His character was more fleshed out and there wasnt much about who Ma Rainey really was or her story.
