I recently discovered Bob Fossie and Gwen Verdon, learned they were married at one time, through UTUBE, Saw Damn Yankees when I was a kid. Didn't remember the actors much. All That Jazz, was about Bob Fossie. I do remember Gwen Verdon, from TV and Cocoon Movies 1990s. But wow, The You Got The Pain. Dance number with Gwen V and Bob F. WOW, He was a cutie, Gwen was Darling, in Damn Yankees movie. You Got The Pain dance number is fantastic. It's like me and my shadow, Bob Fossie with Gwen as his shadow. Gwen Verdon, and Bob as her Shadow, that's how insinc their dancing was together. I watch this number every day. It's so great. I loved Gwen as Lola, what a Siren she was in that dance number. Never realized what a fantastic dancer she was. I always liked her. 7 Brides For 7 Brothers dance is another favorite. I watch it every day too. Loved the movie, actors, actresses, the dances. Barn Dance, my favorite. wonderful, I'm a Lonesome Pole Cat number, Wow. Back in the 40s 50s early 60s lots of great musicals, dancers, dance numbers. I've got a whole list of great Musicals, and Dance numbers. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell, great dancers also from The Barn Dance, from 7 Brides, Leslie Caron, French ballet dancer, just so many wonderful movies, White Christmas, Vera Ellen, the names right now are endless. I miss alot of those Wonderful old Musicals, that goodness, for DVDs I have bought alot my favorite old wonderful Musicals.

I think it's a presentational mistake to keep cutting away from the song/dance numbers you're talking about to show us other songs/scenes from the same movie. When you've got a great number to show us, just show it, uninterrupted, from start to finish. Few of them in the classic era are longer than three minutes or so.
On the other hand, I'm very happy to see that you agree with me in ranking The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing so highly. It seems so effortless, probably because Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen seem so made for each other.
These aren't exactly underrated, but some of my other favorite dance numbers in classic movies are: As a solo: Take Me To Broadway (Bobby Van in Small Town Girl. For a couple: Dancing In the Dark (Astaire and Charisse in The Bandwagon. For a small group (six or fewer): From This Moment On (Rall, Miller, Fosse, Haney, Van, and Coyne in Kiss Me Kate. And you've already shown my favorite big-group number, The Barn Raising in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers--or, at least, some of it! ; ) Thank you!

The scene from White Christmas, Romance Happens while you dance is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Some of the best dancing is in the whole movie! But this one is one if the best. I knew Danny Kaye could dance (Tap, but not to this degree, He holds his own with consummate skill proving how extremely talented he was. Not just a comedian, and funny faces, but a serious showman. Some of the best tap choreography i have ever seen are in this movie not only this scene with Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen, but Vera-Ellens duet tap where she does the nerve-tap, running her foot along the floor, tapping her toes, extremely hard to do! That whole routine Amazing! And she barely out of breath. White Christmas has some of the best dance routines of the genre'. I tried to model myself by watching and watching as I tapped for 22 years of my life, starting at age 3. The best of the best is White Christmas!

Sorry to come off like a pedant but in the 1961 film version of West Side Story, the Cool dance number takes place AFTER the rumble. In the original play it did take place before the fight and it was about the gang getting ready for the fight. But in the film version they decided it was more dramatically logical to place that song after the fight when the gang members are trying to calm down so they wont give themselves away to the police. This change was so effective that many subsequent play versions adopted it. Right now theres no telling where Spielberg will place the song. He has said hes going to do something closer to the original play version, but we wont know for sure until December

Yul Brynner was dealing with lung cancer when filming The King and I, and still pushed to do these dance numbers, especially that scene in particular, repeatedly until it was done perfectly. Each time taking a moment to breathe from an oxygen tank, then getting back up and doing it again.
That should at least garner the waltz they did in a better spot in my opinion for the sheer grace, precision, and work that man put into his performance while literally gasping for air each time they cut for that scene. Truly, he was a remarkable and amazing performer of that time. May he rest peacefully and in greatness still.

Oklahoma was choreographed by the great Agnes DeMille. Her dances redefine choreography on Broadway and any theater geek of any age will know these dances and DeMille!
West Side Story was choreographed by another dance great genius of the theater and ballet Jerome Robbins. You dont know the world famous production number Cool that seems to your lack of knowledge on dance in general

Singing In The Rain has an amazing dance routine by Donald OConnor in the Make Them Laugh number its freakin incredible! Another never mentioned dance number that is underestimated is Jerry Lewis in Cinderfella its really outstanding! I heard after the staircase part he actually was rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. The man could do it all! Jerry Lewis was a super talent!

This explanation of West Side Stories Cool dance number is TOATLLY wrong! Cool is the aftermath of the Jets/Sharks fight. The Jets want revenge. Ice is trying to keep the guys in line, he knows the cops are going to questioning the guys about what happened, and he wants them to not go out and seek revenge. It's about handling the pressure of the fight, that ended in tragedy.

While it doesn't count(Musical from 1980, I'd like to still recommend Dancing from Xanadu. The number is phenomenal for choreography depicting a fantasy vision of two different eras of dance clubs(the 1930's and the 1980's) and how they come together in the end. The film bombed, but has developed into a cult classic over time. and was Gene Kelly's last film.

None of these numbers are underrated. Even if you've chosen to remove half the footage from them. Classics, most of them, with the painful exceptions of Grease and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. What's the point of a post like this when you cut the dances? My guess would be that you're the only one watching who doesn't know these are mostly classics. Right?

I usually have more than a few quibbles with your choices, but not this time. The only two I would have I won't say 'cuz I've never seen the movies, so I'll take your word for it untilI I can see them. Seems like there should be one from The Band Wagon, but I can't make up my mind which one.

The scene from West Side Story is after the big confrontation when the two leaders of the gangs are killed. This is another member of the Gang I don't remember his name in the movie but his real name is Tucker Smith I think we could keep them from taking revenge of any kind

Perhaps the Nicholas brothers scene isn't underrated but under seen since it's a non-MGM black musical. I think anyone who sees it for the first time is astounded. Also, I just watched another Ms Mojo video about the top tap scenes that included this number.

The Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye characters were not struggling to get their production company off the ground. It was amazingly successful. The plot is that they went on winter break and discovered that their WW2 leader was having issues adapting to civilian life.

Cool takes place AFTER the rumble where both Bernardo & Riff are killed, not as a prelude to it. They want to be cool to avoid detection by the police not to prep themselves for the rumble.
Sloppy research. Makes one wonder if anyone actually watched the film

I'm happy to see that Doll on a Music Box made it into the honorable mentions, but for me, the dance scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (or otherwise) that does it for me is Me Ol' Bam-Boo. That is one of my favorite dance scenes ever put to film.

The Cool number from West Side Story was done After Riff and Bernardo were killed and the Jets were all wound up and needed to cool down. The Nicholas brothers dance routines should have been number one or two at least. They were fantastic.

I was pleased to see the barn-raising dance from Seven Brides in there. But there should be some mention of just about any dance number from Kiss Me Kate, as well as the pub scene from The Happiest Millionaire.

The BEST dance sequence in the history of the movies was absolutely, positively Fred Astaire & Eleanor Powell's dazzling, amazing Begin the Beguine number in Broadway Melody of 1940. No other dancers come close.

Ya'll named literally the best dance in White Christmas, how can that be underrated? And Make Em Laugh could never be considered underrated. Both of these films are far from underrated in anyway.

I don't understand how Cool can be underrated! It's a great piece of choreography. It's still better than the recent one. And Bob Fosse's Sweet Charity piece? Really?

In White Christmas, Crosby and Kaye don't struggle to launch their production company. They are already well-established during the story's main events.
