I completely agree with no. 1 but at the same time I'd have loved Edith and Micheal to have a place by their side as well! they were so much in love and tried so hard to give it a place in the world. He actually changed Edith and set her life in a direction that got her where she landed ultimately. That couple is so realistic and still relatable. The fact that he says with pain that he loved Maud but now she can't even recognise her, with the hope alongside that Edith will be there to bring him some light on intellectual level is something different among all these couples. Mathew was the heart of the show, hands down. I would though, would have LOVED to see these two amazing (honest, loving, layered and brilliant) men side by side for longer in the show. That would have been a treat!

I think best and worst are one and the same. they might not have been a romantic couple, but they were a pair all the same, Thomas and O'Brien. Those two ran the show the first season or two. When O'Brien left, I think the character of Thomas was short-changed by the writers who just made him completely ugly and mean. They didn't give him the depth that character had the potential for. and they took him straight from mean to miserable, both incarnations too shallow for Robert-James Collier's true talent as an actor to show through. I don't think the writers understood their own character. they created him and then didn't know what to do with him, so they just used his storylines to be shocking and never allowed for character development. Anybody else get that idea too?

Am I the only one who doesnt understand the hype around Matthew and Mary? They were a terrible couple. Their relationship felt forced and contrite. I never got any real sense that they loved each other. They didnt bring out the best in each other, and in fact seemed to make each other worse. Even Marys mourning period over Matthew felt like grandstanding. I feel this relationship is heavily romanticized because of Matthews tragic death.
Personally I feel that Marys relationship with Henry was _leagues_ better. Henry didnt put up with her crap and Mary genuinely began to change into a better person because of Henry. _I_ certainly found Mary to be more tolerable when she fell in love with Henry.

Cora and Robert are absolutely the best couple, simply because they have been married for so long and their marriage still works. It doesn't always have to be romantic. The main thing is that you get along with each other in everyday life in the long run. And Shrimpy and Susan should have been on the worst couple list as an opposite to Cora and Robert, instead of Edna and Branson, who never were a couple. It wasn't more than fling with them

I really disliked Mary in the beginning, but Matthew helped bring out her softer side, and soon I grew to understand and even like her character. I started to like her less when Matthew was gone though. The fact that she was continually rude to Edith without provocation didn't help. She definitely deserved to be happy, but I just wish Mary and Edith's relationship could have grown a bit more.

Matthew and Mary are meant for each other, the creator should not somehow killed Matthew. This is the only love story I could not forget in my lifetime. Both acted perfectly as a couple or loveteam. They portrayed so well that you want the story not to end. It is so addictive and hold you to the end. The second husband Henry is no good. Not really attractive pair. Why him?

John and Anna are cute but I felt like they basically wrote the same story for them twice, with them both going to jail and fighting to prove each others innocence. Also I always thought the mr green story line would have been more interesting with Thomas. However Thomas is my fave so I am also glad it didnt happen.

Tom Branson and Edna Braithwaite were never a couple. A drunken one night stand entirely orchestrated by Edna to trap Tom did not make them a couple. Therefore, they don't belong on this list. Daisy and William were more of a couple than those two were. So were Tom and the teacher (I was glad to see her go.

As the most of here wrote Rose's parents should be on the worst list. I would take out Edith & Sir Anthony for it. Tho the end was really bad they were a much better couple before. My favorites are Carson & Mrs Hughes. Loved them so much. The Bates and Mary & Matthew would share the second place.

Mr. and Mrs. Carson were the best thing that happened to Downton Abbey (as a character in and of itself. They were like mother and father to the entire household. This quiet force, the foundation for the life of family and staff. The core of all the rest of them. Beautiful couple.

Mary/Matthew, Tom/Sybil, Anna/John Bates, Robert/Cora, Carson/Hughes, Bertie/Edith: I loved them all. I also liked Dickie and Isobel (I wish I could see them marry. Why not mention Michael Gregson/Edith? I was so sad that he died. I wish Violet could find a nice companion.

i hate how sybil & tom come together. i feel he is so toxic in his early years. he is so full of himself and purposely try to tore her apart from her family. i dont see how romantic people see them because they clearly are NOT

Mrs. Hues and Mr. Carson are a weired couple. You don't believe their love for one another. Edith and Herbert should have been the first. They are the best and sweetest couples of them all.

Mary as Elizabeth Bennet? Absolutely not! I like the couple but she did turn him down when he wasn't the heir and that moves them way below Sybil and Tom and Anna and Bates for me.

I agree that Lady Mary and Richard Carlisle were a terrible couple, but the fact that he still kept her secret after they parted suggests that he really did care about her.

Don't agree with Mary and what's his name being in 2nd best couple. Mary and Mathew #1, yes. But Mary with the race car driver. that should have been on the worst list.

Really people are undecided about Henry Talbot? The guy was as interesting as dry paint in a wall, he and Mary should have been put in the worst category.

The worst was at the end when they kick Carson out and give his jog to thomas! They all had had happy endings and barrow was finally out of the house!

Edna was such a predator. Couldn't stand her. So glad Mrs. Hughs put her in her place, also it was the icing on the cake when Thomas told her off too.

Am I the only one who didn't care about Matthew and Mary? I love both characters separately, but I didn't care about them as a couple.

I was so satisfied when Matthew smacked the hell out of Richard after what he said to Mary. He deserved it, and it showed how Matthew cared.

I'm sorry, but what's with that pronunciation of Vera? She basically butchered it, and its not like a name we have not heard before.

I think Bates and Anna were by far the best, even if the writers seemed intent on butchering their relationship every season
