Helga is the most tragic character in Nickelodeon history. Neglected by her parents. Her mom is clearly a drunk. Dad can't even seem to remember her name despite actually caring about his kids even though he plays favorites with them. They barely notice when she's gone. I dont blame her for being angry and her feelings are constantly bottled up and the only outlets are through physical expression A. K. A violence or it comes in the form of unhealthy obsession where her bottled up emotions run wild and take the form of love seeking the approval of the one person who ever acknowledged her. Her sister loves her to death but she. She seems more concerned with her own happiness and is more of a child than Helga. As such is their relationship since she can't be depended on all the time for big sister things.

It's pretty ironic, when I was little I hated things like the Rugrats and Tarzan because it showed kids who had dead parents or were separated from their parents/abandoned. When I was about 6, my dad developed a rare autoimmune disease (he was diagnosed when I was probably around 8 though, towards the end he spent a lot of time in the hospital and my mom stayed with him, so we were with my great grandmom a lot and didn't get to see our parents a lot, then he died two months before I turned 10. My youngest sister was only 4. It's just ironic how the very thing I feared most when I was little was exactly what happened to me. I had no way of knowing what would happen, yet I never took my parents for granted and I would cry myself to sleep if I so much as forgot to give them a hug and kiss goodnight.

At least 3-4 of these subjects made me think of uncle Iroh at the end of this video. He went to war and so did his son. And his son did not make it. Hence why he sings Leaves from the vine when visiting his son's grave. It dealt with the subjects of war and losing a child. Meanwhile, his relationship with Zuko reminds me of how his father treats him. It's funny how his (Zukos) own father felt betrayed (in a way, abandoned) by Zuko for disagreeing in the smallest of ways, yet HE'S the one who truly abandoned Zuko. And in his place, his sister became the Golden child as she's vicious like their father. TLA and Korra were amazing shows. I STILL tear up when I hear the song leaves from the vine. Iroh deserved so much better. He's the uncle we all wish was ours.

The episode of Chuckie loosing his pet bug has forever stuck with me. Partly cause I can relate due to having lost many pets growing up and even now. Heck Im certain that episode aired after the family cat Bobo who I was very close to (he once protected me from getting attacked by another cat we had, he wasnt just a pet to me, he was basically my hero) had to be put to sleep. I still miss him and that episode usually reminds me of him, the closeness we had and how I reacted like Chuckie upon finding out he was gone. The other reason the episode sticks with me is due to the voice acting from Chuckies va. She did a superb job as it feels so real. Its like Im watching an actual kid breaking down in front of me and not an animated one doing it.

While, yes, the animated shows that tackled serious topics were important, I think the Magic Johnson segment was ever more so. We saw raw emotion and hurt in that little girl. At the end of the day, we can brush off the other shows as those topics happen to fictional characters and know those characters didn't live in fear or hurt but this was happening to a very real person. This wasn't acting out a skit. Someone real ridiculed that little one for something she had no control of and Magic telling her both of them were just normal people hit harder than any animated show can. I wanted to reach through the screen and hug her and Magic.

I seriously forgot that Ginger actually almost died in the later seasons of As Told By Ginger. She broke up with Darren and she thought the pain she felt over the next few weeks was because of that. In truth she was slowly dying from appendicitis. It got so heavy that I actually turned off the episode on the second rewatch of the series just like I did the first time. Thank god that her new step father was a doctor. He preformed the surgery that saved her life himself.

I don't know if I would count the Ren and Stimpy example because John Kricfalusi admitted thst he did that episode to make fun of the use of pathos and how it can kill comedy. In fact, I don't know if you can use Ren and Stimpy as an example of anything, except for the fact that sometimes the best art comes from the most mentally unstable people.

The episode of Hey Arnold with Helga seeing the therapist really got to me. I could relate because I am the youngest, and often felt invisible, growing up. My parents weren't neglectful, but my dad was an abusive alcoholic. There is also quite an age difference too. My sister is 13 years older, and my brother is 11 years older.

I haven't watched As Told By Ginger (I should probably find reruns, because it sounds like a great show with a lot of depth, but that episode sounds similar to an episode of Daria, where the protagonist writes a poem about a girl with an eating disorder, which leads to concerns that she has issues with body image.

I remembered all the times on Hey Arnold when Helga's parents were neglectful of her and were more interested in her older sister Olga. Favoritism at it's finest. It made so much sense why she turned out the way she did. Out of all the animated parents I've seen in my life, Helga's parents are far worse.

As a kid, I didnt understand the Rugrats episode with Chuckys mom. I just thought his parents were divorced because mine were when I watched it. (I was like 8 and I never experienced death, so yeah, I was clueless)
As an adult though I have a hard time getting through it without sobbing

My mom was adopted and her parents, not perfect of course, still love her like their own, and they have their own. She's okay with it now but there was a long time she struggled with it. Her bio family tree starts with her and ends with her kids.

I forgot about As Told By Ginger it was a show ahead of it's time. Hey Arnold addressed real world events flawlessly as well. So glad we 90's kids had these good shows grow up on. The Rugrats episode about Chuckie's mom always brings emotions.

I still cry every time the episode of Rugrats where Chaz talks to Chuckie about his deceased mom. Especially cause I just lost my real foster mom a day before New Years Eve last year and I've really been dealing with a lot emotionally since

Avatar: the Last Airbender did a lot of serious real-world issues. True, they were all triggered by the war the show was about, but it also included loss, environmental damage, lost pets, PTSD, and a bunch of other stuff

That little girl Idea Broadbent crying over her diagnosis of HIV is just heartbreaking! I wish there was a way to find out if she was still alive or how she's doing. I want to give her the biggest hug.

U gotta admit, Hefer wasn't the brightest not to figure it out, but that just makes it the shock upsetting it was. Especially considering his blood family never wanted him at all

Angelica was a terrible brat to Chuckie during the Mother's day episode, but I'm glad that didn't stop him and Chaz from remembering his mom together. I felt so bad for Chuckie.

I think that a Nickelodeon show should also portrayal people who are deaf and people who have autism. I think it's important that they include those subjects.

It's crazy how back in the day when shows did this it was progressive. But now when shows try to do this again people get mad and hate on it calling it woke

You didn't even have to play the whole episode of that Rugrats special to get me full-on crying. I think it's a little too close to home for me.

To this day, the Chuckie episode of Rugrats is still one of the most beautiful, honest, and powerful pieces of television media I've ever seen.

When I was younger I only got to see cable shows sporadically, and one of the As Told by Ginger episodes I did see was And She Was Gone.
