Even though I like James Cordon, they really should stop casting him in movie musicals. Hes not funny on film, which is weird because I think hes funny in his show. Its kind of like theres a time and place for his type of funny, and its not in musicals. Thats just my opinion.
Les Mis and Phantom, both should have been done with ONLY musical theater actors. For example, Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom or Valjean. Sierra Boggess as Christine or Fantine. Ill take Norm Lewis and Hugh Panero in any role, they are both wonderful. Ugh so many others wouldve been great for these movie roles, Id name them all if I had the time lol. Samantha Barks was the only one in the Les Mis movie whos vocals were incredible (again my opinion. She also played Eponine in the 25th anniversary concert for Les Miserables as well as other musicals on broadway, so her casting made sense. Hugh Jackman kind of botched the role of Valjean by over acting in some scenes. Its weird to say that someone can over act, but the closeups, and the vocal choices he made with the pacing of the orchestra during Valjeans soliloquy was just odd. It felt forced and over-acted. Idk how else to describe it. Hes a great actor, dont get me wrong. Just not for a musical movie. I wouldve liked to see Hadley Fraser in a better role than the guard in Les Mis as well. Hes amazing and deserved more screen time and a leading role. Cats the movie absolutely needed Elaine Paige, along with a million other changes - the cast being one of them! Everyone in that movie needs to be recast. The storytelling also. I couldve done without the added jokes. They werent funny, it was just awkward.
These big movie studios like to cast big name actors as a way to sell the movie, but a lesser known cast, lesser known meaning known by mostly broadway/west end fans, would have been way better in these cases. It wouldve brought these beautiful musicals like The Phantom of the Opera (my personal favorite) to a bigger, more mainstream audience! It would have given opportunity and more recognition to the amazingly talented actors who already exist in musical theaters. Many of which who are so humble and kind and so INSANELY talented - the best singers Ive personally ever heard both Live and on record. Big movie production companies need to start casting them!

Wow, did you ever leave out a plethora of bad movie musicals we need remade. I guess you only know a couple of movies by R&H and L&L, but their work was butchered. R&H: Redo the godawful South Pacific with its blurry hues ruining the movie. Brigadoon was doomed by a studio counting pennies (it should have been filmed on location in Scotland and not entirely in a studio. On the Town, hacked to death because Frank Sinatra thought Leonard Bernstein's music was too classy for him to sing. Pal Joey, because Sinatra didn't like the idea of playing a heel (though it didn't hurt Gene Kelly's career when he created the role on Broadway. Guys and Dolls, because Sinatra and Brando were totally miscast. (Notice Sinatra screwed up a lot of musicals? He sure did. Not a fan) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forumlosing half the score meant losing some great Sondheim material, which is NEVER smart! On a Clear Day You Can See Forever because it is just a lousy movie and Barbra is horribly miscast. Hello, Dolly! because again Barbra is horribly miscast. The Fantasticks because the longest-running musical of all time deserves a much better movie than this disaster. Man of La Mancha because it should have a cast who can actually sing the score. Gypsy because, well, Roz. JC Superstar because it's an idiotic idea for a film of the original material. Camelotwhat a disaster of a movie (just try watching it now. I know people love it, but I think the movie version of Fiddler on the Roof lost ALL the charm, humor, and pathos of the original show.
Tell us, MsMojo, have you watched ANY movies from before you were born? I really have to wonder about your credentials in choosing here.

miss casting celebrities for name recognition, on The Phantom of the Opera? I get there were some popular actors in the movie, but Emmy, Gerard, and Patrick (the leads) were mostly unknown at that point. I won't deny that the movie does have some hiccups, but it gets an unfair rap, I think the pros outweigh the cons. I was first introduced to the Phantom from the movie and have completely fallen in love with the show and the music, just from the movie. They did a good job bringing the characters and the spirit of the show to the big screen. Gerard Butler doesn't have the most flawless voice, but it's raw, emotional and he brought all the right stuff to the Phantom!

I personally really liked the movie of Dear Evan Hansen even though I can see the problems a lot of people have with it. I know the story will turn most people off and Ben Platt was admittedly too old to still be playing a high schooler, but I thought he gave a solid performance and didn't deserve a Razzie nomination or any of the cyberbullying he got because of its failure. Sure it may not have had the same impact as the stage show but not every adaptation will hit like its source material. I think a lot of the people who didn't like it didn't see the big picture about it. Not everyone may see that, but I like it for what it is.

I would totally remake A Little Night Music cause Elizabeth Taylor was definitely miscast! If I were making it I would cast Marion Cotillard as Desiree Armfeldt! I also totally agree with you on Oklahoma! remaking it for a contemporary audience! A lot of these (except for Rent and Cats) I would do live TV versions! A musical that is not on your list, that I would love to see remade for film is Camelot! Also in terms of EVITA, even though Madonna's voice wasn't theatrical, I have to give her some credit, because she did look a little bit like the real Eva Peron!

Absolutely no way to My Fair Lady. Its a classic, and needs nothing new about it. If we dont want it to disappear from the world, then show it to the next generation! You dont need to remake it for a new audience! Show the new audience a classic movie instead of remaking it!
And if we want to talk about butchering accents, Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins takes the cake, far worse than Audreys. Completely and 100% disagree!
Its a perfect movie. Do not touch. You wouldnt touch Sound of Music, so dont touch this.

I HATED the movie of Phantom of the Opera. Gerard Butler was the Angel of Mucous! He cannot sing. I thought Minnie Driver would be good but her accent was all over the globe and she failed at lip syncing. They had to lower the end of the title song for Emmy Russom because she couldn't hit the E above High C. Otherwise her voice was just average but she was too young and made the Phantom and Raoul look like child molesters. Just redo it with actual singers who are age appropriate!

I have yet to check out the Cats movie, but I would love to see The Phantom of the Opera with an actual trained singer as the title character, and a Les Mis remake with pretty singing versus what the movie did.
I tried watching the remake of The Music Man but couldn't make it past Goodnight My Someone. I'd like to see a better take on that, too.
The movie version of Sweeney Todd was my introduction to the story, but I wouldn't mind seeing another take on it.

The only thing I wish was different about The Phantom of the Opera movie was Gerard Butler. I think Antonio Banderas should have played him instead with a mixture of Lon Chaney, Ramin Karimloo and Michael Crawford. Then we would've had the perfect Phantom for the perfect movie! I also think Antonio Banderas should've played Guido in Nine! Another movie musical I'm disappointed it wasn't included even in the honorable mentions let alone this list!

It always strikes me as funny when you want to recast movie musicals that are stacked with Broadway stars, including the ones that made the show a smash on the stage in original or present casts. Phantom has some of these and classically trained movie stars as does Les Miz, Oklahoma, Sweeney Todd, My Fair Lady and Rent (among others. I usually love your lists but needless to say that this one hit a really sour note with me.

I think my top 2 faves shoe be remade. Rocky Picture Horror Show and Little Shop of Horrors. For Little Shop of Horrors, I pictured almost the whole cast. the lady singer in the beginning can be one of the teenage girls (Michelle Weeks. Seymour = Justin Biber, Audrey = Zendaya, Audrey ll = Cedric the Entertainer, Mr Mushnik = Nathan Lane, Orin aka Doctor = I'm stuck there but this here the cast would be great.

All except for Cats and maybe Phantom are excellent movie musicals (though, yes, Russell Crow was hopeless in Les Mis. The medium of film is a radically different beast than live stage performance - movies, on the whole, will NEVER translate the stage experience effectively so need to be seen for their own merits. As such, with the exception of Cats (definitely) and Phantom (maybe, this list was a bit pointless.

10. Funny you should mention that, Mojo. Because prior to the film we got, several other attempts were scrapped. This includes an animated musical that Steven Spielberg was producing. Heck, I feel like the film could've worked as an animated Disney movie. Given Disney's successes with musicals in recent years what with Frozen, Moana and Encanto, I feel like they have the material they need for a hit.

I thought Phantom and Les Mis were wonderful. I havent seen Dear Evan Hansen on stage, but the movie touched me. I actually think Cats was as good as the show could possibly be on screen. I think its just meant for the stage.
Please redo Man of La Mancha and Camelot. Those songs were meant to be sung by powerhouse vocalists - not speak-singing!

I agreed pretty much with all except for the Phantom. I thought the movie definitely did the musical justice. It captured the magic and emotion. Yes, a trained opera singer may have been able to belt out MOTN better, but Butler's acting was nuanced and delicate, which made it more subtle which is better on the screen vs a stage production

Three words: Rock. Of. Ages. That movie was garbage. Making Stacee Jaxx sympathetic was the wrong move, but the worst part was that they completely changed the antagonist just so that they could shoehorn Catherine Zeta Jones into the movie. Franz is the best part of the stage show, and he was nowhere to be found. Please remake this properly.

I came here looking for the offended Gerard Butler fans who think his Phantom was phabulous and wasn't disappointed. The poor man can't sing his way out of a wet paper bag, and considering the age Emmy Rossum was, it was borderline pedo-bait. I think most fans of the movie haven't seen the real deal in person or they'd understand.

How about 1969s Hello, Dolly remade with Bette Midler as Dolly! Also 1974s Mame remade Starring Cher an Auntie Mame! As well as 1962s Gypsy remade Starring Barbara Streisand as Mama Rose and Lady Gaga as Gypsy Rose Lee! Streisand is already 80 y/o let's give it to her soon before it's too late!

Sweeney doesn't really need a remake at this point.
I think the proper description for movies based on musicals is not remake but another adaptation.
For example while the recent West Side Story does count as a remake of the original it also counts as another adaptation of the stage show.

I wouldnt mind a Wiz remake or Oklahoma. But I have a bit of Rent fatigue after seeing more than two versions over the course of two years. I still havent seen Tick Tick Boom. Another classic musical that should be remade is Hello Dolly. This time, a gorgeous widow aged triple threat as Dolly.

The biggest problem with Les Miserables is that the cast was singing live during filming. While that's appropriate for stage productions, filming has a lot more going on - more crew, more noise, more stopping and starting, more everything. The live singing was a gimmick that didn't work.

OMG I loved the movie Phantom of the Opera. Watched it at least 100 times. This is a true classic. I think you really missed this one. You should make a public retraction! Should have never made this list. BTW Emily Rossum is FANTASTIC. I think you truly missed on this one!

Yes to Dear Evan Hansen
When I heard that they were doing a film I was excited but seeing the final product it's trash.
Stephen Chobsky, Marc Platt and Ben Platt ruined what made me love about the musical.
Michael Lee Brown would have been a better Evan.

Hell no to remaking little shop off horrors. The two cuts we got of little shop of horrors depending on what you prefer the tone of the film to be our perfect for both sides. The cast was perfect sadly 2 of them have been dead for quite a while now.

I have seen several stage productions of Phantom and still like the movie version just as much. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, why not bring some other great musicals to the screen like Wicked, Kinky Boots, Book of Mormon, Aida, etc.
