I read the book a few months ago, it was strange not realizing how close I was to all of this while it was all happening.
My best friends older brother was in the group school of the prophets and was named in the book, a girl I knew secretly married Ron but not legally. Some other stuff but I didn't know any of it until a few years later.
My Dad took me to meet Ron and Dan in 1984 about a month before they murdered their sister in law and her baby. I thought I was going to look at a motorcycle which was weird because my Dad hated motorcycles. It's too lengthy to explain but he was in the state mental hospital in Provo and tricked me into taking him to their house.
Ron and Dan started talking all this weird religious stuff to me and I just thought they were both nuts like my Dad.
Which obviously they were!

I can't help but wonder if they even had a list to begin with. I know they were going to see that 1 Bishop or something next and they weren't there or something and that's why they didn't do it. Or maybe it's just when they got there the house was empty. I have no freaking clue but I think they just did it and used the list as an excuse to justify it in their own head. Because she was an individual and didn't fall into the craziness of the family they had to come up with a way to kill her and blame it on God told me so

Why Krakauer's book is described as controversial eludes me.
Everyone with more than 2 brain cells knows about the history and problems with Mormonism.
Even though men are told they're allowed to always tell women what to do, some of those men, when they have female daughters get appalled at the thought of what this will mean for their daughters as they know that there are plenty of really awful men.
Any way of thinking that instructs you to NOT think should make you think very hard.

My husband grew up just down the street from where this horrific crime took place. It was perpetrated by two religious fanatics and every religion has fanatics in it. This show skewed a lot of the religion to paint a picture that people who do not know the religion will take as facts. Get accounts from the people who lived this horrible crime, not someone trying to profit by it.
reply

Extremists from every major religion have a common theme: exercising control on everyone to suit their selfish needs.
Ex: polygamy, reducing/banning access to education & healthcare for women & children, living apart from society in separate communities etc.
Its a tragedy what continues to happen and remain unreported today.

It's a long list. Today we add Michael Haight of Enoch Utah. He's an offspring of Issac Haight, mass murderer and body cavity searcher at Mountain Meadows Massacre. Ervil LaBaron. Warren Jeffs. Kingstons. Lori Daybell. It's part of a disease called Mormonism which incorporates a very special form of polygamy and blood atonement.

After mormons second anointing they are allowed to commit any sin, except she'd innocent blood and no one is innocent so ya its a doctorine they believe so they don't see a problem. Also in the temple they promise to disembowell themselves like they did those poor innocent people in a sacred ritual taken from the masons.

I think the show did an excellent job of showing several perspectives. The reconciling of history and current beliefs resulting to fundamentalism with the brothers, the reconciling of that history resulting in lost faith with Andrew Garfield, and seeing the beauty of devout faith with Brenda until her very end.
reply

Horrifying, agreed. But true? I found few truths in the story. It's clear the Murders were real, and as for failings of faith, it seems so, but overall I can't say I'm convinced that the filmmakers know the contents of person conversations that happened over a hundred years ago any better than you or I.
reply

There are Mormon fundamentalists and they have killed members of rival groups and their own family members. I can think of this case and at least 3 others. The religion was literally pulled out a known con artist's hat, but it's now a billionaire dollar business, so there's lot of (money) to protect.
reply

This screenplay was just a joke and it is obvious that the writer has no clue but people will have no clue. 2 wack jobs done a religion make. They were excommunicated and even the other groups thought they were nuts. So sad for Brenda and Erica but there could have been more deaths.

I have a newfound appreciation and love for Andrew Garfield after watching this series. Honestly, everybody involved did an amazing job. This story is incredibly tragic and I am glad the horrific reality of Mormonism/FLDS has been spotlighted because of the book and series.
reply

I began watching this show as I like the main actor, until the scene with the disturbing sick hanging of a dog. Why would you add this to the film? Can't understand why you found it worthy to deliberately harm any Animal. How disgusting you wankers!
reply

Very Patriarchal thinking. And so ignorant. No, not all FLDS are like this. But too MANY ARE. Odd and Incompetent. And now we have Christian Fundamentalists Following another Pathetic Narcissist. Donald trump. Joseph smith would be JEALOUS
reply

I watched it, but I only went two episode in because I hated the cop with the ditective acting like he was his partner. I only learned the guy who did it, or accused was instant because he said, single Mormons don't enter selastial heaven.
reply

If you liked this, watch The VVitch
It's brutally accurate, has amazing acting, and is heart wrenching. Stephen King has stated that it scared him. It did me too; deeply. These films make religion feel dangerous. IMO

reply

Mormon here, we go by LDS, but our prophet and apostles speak out bluntly about how wrong and wicked it is for men to abuse their priesthood authority by ruling over their families. Its a partnership always
reply

I have lived in Utah all my life and I have always dealt with if you are not mormon you are nothing To me mormons can eat it. Not all, but most are that way. If they want a convert go somewhere else.
reply

Andrew Garfield is outstanding in this role.
Having experienced and seen people struggle with faith, I really appreciate his acting so thoughtfully and believably about such heavy topics.

reply

i tried to finish this serious but as an agnostic person this was pretty hard to watch with such a high focus on the religion aspect when i really just wanted to find out who the murderer was.
reply

movie seemed more about a cop losing his faith. the book was a dissertation on FLDS and these specific murders. I don't remember anything in the book about a cop losing his faith.
reply

Probably some good acting in it, but there is nothing in the scriptures that says that wives must be submissive to their husbands, or nothing that I am aware of in the faith.
reply

I swear, anything too religous for me is culty. I just cant be with these type of people, it makes me insane. Hate to judge but theres a lot of room for it. Its all crazy.
reply

I binged the whole thing in one night it was intriguing look at control of people via religion & how fundamentalism is out of odds with every tenant of every religion.
reply

Take a good look at history and all the horrors that were committed in the name of god and religion. I will just stick to being an atheist, or at best agnostic.
reply

You know, faith is a wonderful thing, but radical religious extremists are to be avoided at all costs. Look at what they're doing in what used to be the U. S.
reply

Why does the media refer to this insanity as fundamental? That would make the fundamentals of math something like two plus four equals Pi.
reply

Ive watched this series twice in four days, cant recommit enough. Ill finish the book tomorrow. Safe to say Im obsessed.
reply

I read this book many years ago. Very informative. Knowing the enemy and how they operate is definitely a protection.
reply

What a f of family of dysfunctional men who couldn't function without their feet on the necks of women and children.
