These are the Disney moments that shaped our childhood. For this list, well be looking at the most memorable and impactful scenes from the studios animated films that influenced us as kids. Our countdown includes The Lion King, Mulan, Pocahontas, and more! Which Disney moment shaped YOUR childhood?
Date: 2023-11-21

As a Gen X-er I feel a little left out by most of these choices. Make no mistake, I love the Disney Renaissance films, but I saw them as a young adult. My childhood was shaped by other moments, back when Disney still periodically released its classic animated features to films. A few:
The transformation of the Queen into the Witch (Snow White)
The stepsisters' ripping Cinderella's ball gown to shreds, and the fairy godmother materializing at her side to comfort her (Cinderella)
Baby Mine and Pink Elephants on Parade (Dumbo)
Bambi and Thumper on ice (Bambi)
I've Got No Strings (Pinocchio)
I'm glad some good moment from the pre-Renaissance films made it into the Honorable Mentions; I agree with all of these.

Top 3 (In my opinion):
1. Reflection
2. A whole new world
3. Mufasa's death
These were the three moments on this list I remembered watching as a kid and inspired from them. While Mufasa's death may not be as influential as others, it tells the truth of reality where we all have to face and as you grow older, you understand the message more. The other two are inspirational because it shapes up your future from your childhood, however, reflection is more impactful than a whole new world because it reflects us, literally, and tells us how we look to ourselves, and I can relate to this because my life has been a challenge (I mean sad but true.

Those moments DEFINITLEY shaped our childhood, more stayed with me forever: The Mufasa's death tears me apart every time I see and anyone cries, well show how would our reaction be if our parents die when we were children and without knowing what is the death. Also Let it go (the most magic song for me, I sang it a lot as child, Hakuna Matata (the most catchy and funny song, when Mulan climbed the column that no one could in I'll make a man of you, Almost there from Tiana, Spaghetti dinner from Lady and Tramp, Ballrom waltz from Beauty and Beast, and I see the light from Tangled

I laughed joyfully during the waterfall scene in The Emperors New Groove, teared up in Mulans Reflection (because I can relate to Mulans struggles to fit into societal norms while trying to express herself, Beauty and the Beasts ballroom scene sung by the wonderful late Angela Lansbury, Mufasas Death in the Lion King and sang my heart out Part of the World in the Little Mermaid and Jasmines part in A Whole New World in Aladdin. Disney is still a huge part of my life and Im so thankful for its magic to put a smile on my face.

and what about the Wild Thornberry Movie where Eliza went to the boarding school hugging her dad goodbye and the song played There could never be a father Love his daughter more than I love you
I know they're from Nickelodeon but they should be on this list as well

So many of these Disney moments have me in tears nowadays, cannot watch Beauty and the Beast without crying, who didnt feel the impact of Mufasas death, Little Mermaid will always be my fav and strangely relatable, cried when Esmeralda helped Quasimodo and when he realised she liked Pheobas, I get why Mulan did what she did and her reasons are definitely relatable, Aladdin will always be memorable for the late Robin Williams for me.

One of my defining moments is found in The Rescuers, when the mice are asking Rufus the cat what happened to Penny and why she left the orphanage. Rufus respondence is Oh, she wouldn't get in with that crazy lady! During that whole scene my Mom would say, This is why you don't talk to strangers. Did you listen? It has stuck with me all these years later.
reply

Classic Disney in Honorable Mentions? NOPE! Your precious childhood would not have been shaped by the Disney Renaissance had it not been for the paths that the Classic Disney animators forged before them. Or did your parents not buy you the VHS/DVDs of the Classics?
reply

Mine has to be Lady & The Tramp. It was the 1st Disney movie I saw on VHS that my parents rented from the movie store. Then they bought me my own VHS copy after they bought the 1st VCR we had. Owning my own copy of a Disney movie was a big deal when I was a kid.

Good list! I wouldve added the surge of inspiration and motivation we felt when Mulan cut her hair and took up her fathers armor, as well as Ill Make a Man Out of You.
But yes, Mufasas death made me cry and Colors of the Wind opened my mind.

reply

I wish I could go back in time in the 90s and watch people react to The Lion King in the theaters for the first time. The animated movie is a masterpeice. The music, the characters, and the story is perfect. Hans Zimmer is so good
reply

Other than Mufasas death, these moments are all songs. I was fully expecting a list of MOMENTS.
You could have done it using almost all the same examples, but just changed what you focused on for each number. But whatever

reply

Bambi's mom dies. That should be on this list. Also, the spaghetti kiss from Lady and the Tramp should be higher on the list. For most of us, that moment defines our first idea of what we think true love looks like.
reply

The honorable mentions SHOULD'VE been in here and this could've been a top 15 instead, also they all defined my childhood except for The nightmare before Christmas I don't really care about it.
reply

Lady and the trampoline, my mom would sing la la Lu to me as a baby and I also watched that movie religiously as a kid and Bella note will be played at my wedding that has been made clear

To be completely honest, Ariel singing the reprise of Part of your world, with the waves crashing behind her, and she rises up on the rock in The Little Mermaid shaped my childhood!
reply

As an adult I can definitely relate now to I won't say I'm in love. It's one of my all time favorite songs from Disney. Just like Meg, I'm still hoping to find Mr. Right someday.
reply

Baby be mine and youll be in my heart always stuck with me cause my mom sung em as lullabies when I was a baby. Dumbo(original) and Tarzan forever will make me feel at home
reply

I used to dance in high school and one of my favorite routines was part of your world. The dance was very emotional and I always felt a connection to that song anyway.
reply

Making a list like this without including Bambi's mom's death is objectively wrong. No other animated scene in history has affected to many kids in such a strong way.
reply

The parent trap fencing scene and mias makeover in the princess diaries. sorry its not animated
I didnt watch hunchback and lady and the tramp until recently

reply

Lady and the Tramp is a sweet movie I actually dressed up as Jasmine and my boyfriend was Raja and his parents said to me I guess its a whole new world for you
reply

A Whole New World is my fave Aladdin song but I love one Step Ahead, too. That is my Favorite Disney Hercules song. Bella Notte shaped my Childhood. :-): -(
reply

I was expecting one of the musical sequences in The Lion King (i. e. Circle of Life, I Just Cant Wait To Be King, or Hakuna Matata) to be on the list!
reply

Hakuna Matata was another childhood defining moment. It taught us to put our concerns and troubled past behind. Hence the definition no worries.
