Cult, Roanoke and Apocalypse are easily the worst 3. The former is way to heavy to the point of being political propaganda. Roanoke and Apocalypses have way too much going on and are just too out there and too many factions and almost too many twists and turns. The series does best when its on one location for like 95% of the time and is focused on a small group of characters that can really build the tension rather than being long and drawn out and convoluted.
The alien plot in double feature must have been because they couldn't find or do something else because my lord was it awful, took me weeks to watch those few episodes I just couldn't bring myself to watch more than one every couple days it was that bad it really hurt my willingness to watch the show at all

Murder House is nostalgic but it didnt age well, Asylum is by far the best cinematically and story wise, I absolutely adored Freakshow but somewhere within it is where AHSs pacing got a tad off. Ironically one of my least favorites Roanoke is the scariest, and Cult is an underrated gem in my opinion! But the rest are just somewhat likable or just really bad Red Tide started out so convincing and turned into a dumpster fire. and the other story in Double Feature was so bad during the first episode I couldnt sit through it. I was let so down after that and I never gave AHS a chance again. Anything new that is.
Edit: Oh yeah and I completely forgot that STORIES was a thing. We wont talk about that.

My personal top 6:
1. Asylum - the plot (and the well written closure to all story arcs) and the acting from Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe
2. Coven - girl power! .and Jessica frickin' Lange
3. Hotel - amazing backstories. Lady Gaga was the perfect cast for Countess
4. Freak Show - my heart broke for Pepper but also. cuz Jessica Lange
5. Murder House - it started it all
6. Apocalypse - cuz I love the witches and they're back
I couldn't care less for the other seasons. I think Sarah Paulson's already burnt out after Hotel. I added Apocalypse because I know Coven is her personal fave and I myself love her playing the kind-hearted Cordelia.

6. Cult (Turns boring in the 6th episode but is the first not to use ghosts.
7. Apocalypse (Coven witches are a highlight but the script is terrible and most characters aside from Cordelia, Madison, Myrtle or Mallory are not well developed.
8. Roanoke (I don't know the point of this season. Murderhouse-esque. Not good.

Double Feauture was so terrible, it's okay it's ranked at last place. My top 3 are Murder House, Freak Show and Coven. Freak Show should be ranked higher, the story was so complex and well put together, Jessica was just amazing as Elsa. Asylum on the other hand never got under my skin, I don't see why people love it so much. It's not even in my top 5 or 6.

So far asylum and freak show are my favorite then coven murder house was good as well Ive been trying to watch hotel Ive seen mixed reviews Im still in the first episode and it hasnt gotten me into it yet but idk if to keep watching or watch another one its just I hate Jessica Lange isnt in the later seasons and her acting is just so good

5) Apocalypse- serviceable - Mediocre- Anticlimatic.
Everything else is - garbage, agenda driven nonsense with poor writing, poor pacing, lack of personality and world building.

Asylum is peak AHS. I thought the characters in Freak Show were brilliant, and lets not forget Sarah Paulson playing the conjoined twin sisters. Massive shout out to the VFX team for that one! Double Feature wasn't so bad, I especially enjoyed the second half of the season.

Good to see 8 ranked better than it usually is. It sealed the first 3 seasons. Which were also the best. Especially 2 and 3. Followed by 1984, which was fun, then probably roanoke. Others all had good qualities but started to lose me half way through.

After Jessica Lange and all the greats left, I stopped watching, season 5 or 6 was my last to watch and apocolypse, but with the new season and the kardashians ruining that as well, I will definitely not be watching any new releases of the show

Coven was one of the best up until the horrible and contrived last few episodes that ruined everything that was setup. Apocalypse also had a strong setup and fell flat at the end but not as bad as Coven. All the other endings were better.

Sorry, can't take this top seriously when Hotel is put below Cult and Freak Show below Roanoke and Apocalypse. The latter is one of the most poorly written and only holds up because of the fan service.

Everyone loves Asylum but I think its overrated too much going on. The aliens was too over the top for me Coven is my fav seasons & I think Roanoke was the scariest & a true American horror story.

1984 will always be my personal favorite season. Im just a sucker for all things 80s. the music, 80s slashers references, the fashion. Its all done very well in that season

I think Coven is easily the best, its more balanced than a lot of the other seasons and I think its a necessary reprieve from constant doom and gloom with its good humour

Freak show had so much potential if only they didn't kill of twisty so early, it just became boring after he died. Asylum is definitely the best season!
