A Star Is Born should be WAY higher. And sorry, but this version was way more powerful with better chemistry than the original.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie was NOT good. At all. It was such a trope laden cringe fest.
In The Heights would've been WAY MORE acclaimed had it not dropped in the middle of the pandemic.
Pitch Perfect is gold!
There is a reason everyone forgets about Sing Street BTW.

reply

I don't consider Pitch Perfect a musical. no story is told through song, it's just a movie with performances in it, but they're all diegetic. Also no love for Into The Woods? I thought it was actually pretty good! :) my number one is tick tick boom though. No offense to West Side Story but there was nothing groundbreaking about it other than a great cast - TTB however hit me in my soul.
reply

I love Pitch Perfect and A Star Is Born, but I wouldn't call them musicals. They're movies, and they have characters performing music as part of the story, but the songs are existing _in the universe of the movie, _ and they're just being performed in-universe rather than used to tell the story. Sorry to fans who disagree, but that's kind of a key aspect of musicals.

A great list. The only 2 I disagree with are
The Last Five Years should have made the list. JJ and Anna are fantastic together. Though I am in the minority that falls more on Jamies side than Cathys.
I am very anti The Greatest Showman and that has nothing to do with the story, but everything to do with Jackman.

reply

The Greatest Showman and Pitch Perfect were the ones that took me by pleasant surprise the most. I usually dont find circus acts or acapella appealing. But I thought I check them out for the soundtracks. I didnt expect to get fully blown away by either movie though. So Im still glad years later I did.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for ranking Sing Street so high on your list! Not only one of my favourite movie musicals, but one of my favourite movies, full stop. Here is hoping the musical that was scheduled to open on Broadway in 2020, still has legs.
reply

the greatest showman should be higher and the rocketman soundtrack is a masterpiece even Elton being a cultural treasure and a timeless icon, Taron really did an amazing job and i enjoy more the songs from the movie than the originals & he should sing more
reply

A Star Is Born was absolutely phenomenal! Both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga totally nailed their roles! I can't believe that this movie won only one Oscar and lost to an average inaccurate biopic about a legendary band!
reply

Thank you for including the very underated Sing Street!
I love this movie and I really hope more people will give it a chance!
I listened to Drive it like you stole it for weeks after I saw it

reply

I can't believe The greatest showman is the last one in the list. Some people complain because of the story to the real P. T. Barnum but the movie and the musical part is a complete masterpiece
reply

Taron Edgerton was robbed of the Oscar for Rocketman! It was unfortunate that it was released a year after Bohemian Rhapsody hence there was no hype for it. It was better than Bohemian Rhapsody.
reply

The wonderful Sing Street was the very first movie I thought of when I saw the title of this video, but I figured it didn't stand a chance of making this list. Yet there it is at #2! Well done!
reply

Really? Still a first for the director. From his work, hes done dramas, adventures and action. I couldnt believe it when I saw the trailer but after seeing the movie, it was very well done
reply

I'm in love with Tick, Tick Boom! It's a masterpiece of storytelling, directing, and cinematography. And such a great cast! That and Greatest Showman are my two favorites from this list.
reply

Janet Gaynor (1937, Judy Garland (1954, Barbra Streisand (1976) and Lady Gaga (2018)
17 Years for the 1954 version
22 Years for the 1976 version
42 Years for the 2018 version

reply

Andrew Garfield should have won on Oscar for Tick Tick Boom. He became Jonathan Larsen, just watch any video of the real Jonathan and you can see how closely her portrayed him.
reply

dominican-american I absolutely adore in the heights and has a huge place in my heart and makes me feel so proud of where I'm from can't wait to be back on the island soon
reply

Correction: In Everybody's Taking About Jamie, the lead character isn't struggling to come out (He's already out, but trying to fulfill his dream of becoming a drag queen.
reply

Anna and the apocalypse was an awesome horror musical. Still love soldier of War.
The last five years was beautiful. Love Anna. Still hurting is my fav

reply

I just watched LaLa Land again last night. Absolutely immersive, transporting experience. You feel like you are those two people. And the music is. chef's kiss!
reply

Unfortunately I didnt have popcorn when I saw Sing, Kubo & The Two Strings, A Star Is Born (2018) and Mary Poppins Returns in a certain movie theater
reply

A Star is Born and La La Land were WAY too low. La La Land almost won best picture and there's supposed to be 6 movies that are better?
reply

How are the original Mama Mia not on this list, and The Greatest Showman number ten? Both of them are strong candidates for nicer one.
reply

I cant believe you put that thing The Heights or whatever above A Star Is Born and above La La Land. La La Land should be number one.
reply

This has to be the worst ranking list Ive ever seen Greatest Showman #10! Mamma Mia Here We Go Again honorable mention. Crazy
reply

Good selection, make a top of the best children movies of the 2010s: Hugo (2011, The Muppets (2011, Paddington (2014)
reply

Rocketman isn't a biopic. Elton John and Taron Egerton have both stated that it is fantasy movie inspired by his life.
reply

I would have put Greatest Showman much higher, but youll get no argument from me about where you put West Side Story!
reply

Theres also a great japanese movie about love of musical, and is a musical! really good if you can find it.
