were looking at differences in Disney reimaginings that improved upon the source material. Our countdown includes The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and more! Which Disney film do YOU think should be remade?
Date: 2023-11-21

Comments and reviews: 30

My honorable mentions:
Tiger Lily (Peter Pan and Wendy): She's not only a lot more interesting, but both she and Hook show Wendy contrasting differences in growing up and she's almost a maternal figure.
Circus (Dumbo): The adult characters are more developed, one of them relates with Dumbo's struggles, the ringmaster is not evil or unlikable, and the writers actually considered what to do with a flying elephant in a circus.
Narrative (Jungle Book): The beginning, middle, and end have a solid plot
The Prince (Cinderella): HE'S ACTUALLY INTERESTING! He has a personality, learns how to rule, develops some great chemistry with the titular character, oh and he joins the search for the girl who fits the glass slipper rather than stay home and yawn all day
Jasmine (Aladdin): She actually tries to be an effective ruler and doesn't just run away and forget that she hates being a princess.
Father son time (Pinocchio): Geppetto and Pinocchio have a brief montage of being together and not just one night together
Scuttle as a Northern Gannet (The Little Mermaid): As great as it is to see her befriend a seagull, somehow a diving bird makes a bit more sense (though how is Scuttle able to stay 5 minutes underwater and talk)
Developed Romance (The Little Mermaid): Both Eric and Ariel are given equal character development rather than just one character being interesting and the other dull. They shown to have a lot in common and are given more screen time to share their interests and develop a bond.
Any I missed?

A few more mentions:
1. Fixing the lyrics of Arabian Night in Aladdin.
2. The carpet has a good reason to be loyal to Aladdin.
3. Theres an explanation to why the gotta marry a prince law exists in the first place, and why Jasmine wasnt let out of the castle.
4. Mulan defeats the villain by herself, rather than having Mushu do it.
5. What screws Mulan with the matchmaker isnt the so-called lucky cricket. Its a spider that shows up and scares her sister, who has arachnophobia.
6. Mulans skills actually make sense. Shes been training since her childhood. Definitely beats the suddenly, theyre all much stronger twist in the cartoon.
7. The Dumbo film has a villain we love to hate.
8. Dumbos birth is an actual birth, and his big ears make sense (a birth defect due to his mother being constantly abused during her pregnancy.
9. You actually see Jac and Trustys owners.
10. The tramps backstory, to explain why he didnt trust humans.
11. Jim and Darling show Sarah the door for her negligence.
12. Roger suddenly getting rich enough to afford a bigger house actually makes sense. Much more than in the cartoon.

and also if I was making my own remake of
Beauty and the Beast
my way of fixing things would be this instead of erasing people memories of the castle my idea would be to the enchantment would just move the inter castle from one country somewhere far far far away to another country somewhere hidden and the people from the another country didnt know what happened to the castle and later on the castle was forgotten
and the Beasts parents were killed by the enchantment or the Beasts parents werent there at the castle at the time of the curse and they had to build a new one or they end up being broke by then
and the enchantment put a picture of the Beast showing his human self and each year the picture changes showing how he would have looked like if he was a human by then these would be my ideas if I was making a remake of
Beauty and the Beast

My favorite changes/additions to live action disney movie
Peter pan and Wendy- Tink is helpful and kind instead of a jelous brat and tiger lily has a bigger story line. I love the comraderie between wendy, Tink and tiger lily
Beauty and the Beast - belle's backstory about her mom and her passing fits in perfectly as well as the beast storyline/song about his childhood. Wonderful additons that help you understand the characters more
Aladdin- Jasmine becomes Saltan ( i wish this was added in the original ) but im so glad they added in the new one. It was her role to take, not for aladdin to marry into
(And my absoulte favorite addition) - Cinderella - that kit and Ella interact before the ball and have a sincere conversation makes their falling in love makes so much more sense! Cinderella is the best live action that disney has done!

The liveactions at the end did have some good changes: 1As you said, I was truly amazed when I saw to the princesses Cinderella, Aurora and Jazmin becoming in queens now also to lead; and when I saw Dumbo the reamke never I could imagine a best ending than see him and his mother finally free in their habitat; I liked the backstories they gave to Maleficent and Lady Tremaine, that they weren't bad just because they were and that they were once like the princess protagonists until their tragic story happened. I was surprised when Cinderella and the Prince met before the ball and that was also the reason why she wanted to attend to see him again; besides, the kingdoms of Maleficent and Aurora were united by love, but by the love of mother and daughter that they had for each other. Another improvement I would say are some of the new songs added

Alright MsMojo how much Disney paid you to shill the live action remakes or your so delusionally arrogant in think these most of these changes fixed the original Disney films when there weren't such problems in the originals or just ridiculous like the 2014 Maleficent. Now I'll admit some of these changes are really good like the entries of the 2016 Jungle Book and the 2015 Cinderella though not happy with Cinderella just singing when trapped instead of trying to get help like with her mice friends or indifferent to like the diverse casting because that should depend on the actors' acting skills not just for representation. Besides most of Disney films were based on fairy tales, legends or children stories so the only changes should be ones that'll make it easier for anyone to watch while staying true to the original stories.

In the original book of 101 Dalmatians there was a certain justice. Not only did Roger and Anita buy a bigger house, but they bought and renovated Hell Hall, Cruella's country home where she imprisoned the pups! Besides that, we don't KNOW that they didn't buy a bigger house; they just decided to end the story with the dogs coming home. That was fine.
I do take exception to the new ending of Dumbo. In the original, Dumbo and his mother were treated well and taken care of. Since Dumbo enjoyed flying, performing wasn't a bad thing for him. But letting loose two animals who were basically raised in captivity and expecting them to survive out in the wild is actually rather cruel.
Side note: The loss of Mushu was one of the things that I liked BEST about the live-action version of Mulan.

reply

do like that about 101
liked the witch in mulan though the characters outside her were flat.
thought gaston as himself was fine as the ptsd if anything brings up why the enchantress didn't help him instead of letting him die.
didn't need maleficent becoming friends with aurora at the cost of the fairies/king being idiotic but do like the idea of her watching over aurora easing her heart realizing what she did to an innocent.
didn't like the memories being erased(that alongside making them inanimate made the enchantress more of a jerk cursing the servants instead of just the beast even if he hit puberty) as i like the idea more that the prince was so selfish the kingdom forgot him(though is odd the animated version never showed the villagers reaction to their prince returning)

reply

This may be a very unpopular opinion.
But, as much as I find it cool that Cinderella and the Prince meet early in the forest.
I love how they meet in the original way better.
Im just a sucker for love at first sight tropes. Lol
Granted, its love at first sight for Cinderella and the Prince in the remake but still. Lol
The Prince immediately takes liking towards her because other girls are only caring about him but Cinderella is much more interested in the castle around her which makes him see how incredibly humble she is.
He then chooses her and then dances with her seeing much more of how entirely kind she is making him fall in love with her.
I just find that much more romantic. Lol

I'm probably one of few people who loves the live action Mulan film. The many changes were seen with controversy, but many of them make sense. It made more sense to have a phoenix than a dragon guide Mulan. It made more sense for her to be trained by an older general and to fall in love with a fellow soldier. Even the villains are given more depth and are more historically accurate in the 2020 film. I will say that it was unnecessary to remove her grandmother as she's such an underappreciated character, but still, I will defend Mulan to the death
reply

A lot of people may not know this but various versions of Cinderella's story addresses the glass slippers remaining unchanged after the spell's end. There's usually a line in the narration that expresses that the Fairy Godmother left them permanently as a memento of Cinderella's evening with Prince Charming. In fact, the original Disney animated version does subtly address this; the animals notice the slipper still on her foot, drawing her attention to it then leading her to look upward to say thank you, most likely to the Fairy Godmother.
reply

Okay I disagree with.
#19. That was poorly handled, though somewhere there was a good idea trying to get through.
#18 She was a cool character, but she really could have just easily killed off the villain and instead succumbs to his will.
#17 Another good idea lost in a bad execution
#9 Not better than the original. If this was released before or long after Frozen I wouldn't mind as much, but since it literally came a year after Frozen the twist is not as fresh anymore. I do like her character development though.

While the changes in The Jungle Book are certainly different from the 1960s movie they are actually simply true to the source material, Kipling's Jungle Book stories. They even modelled the last shot of Mowgli in the tree with Baloo and Bagheera after the original illustration in the book which ends with Mowgli staying in the jungle. The only really new storyline the the 2016 movie is the background story about Mowgli's father wounding the tiger.
reply

No change to Aladdin was an improvement on the original. Many of the changes they did to Jasmine to make her more contemporary undercut Aladdin's character, including having her inherit the role of Sultan. Aladdin comes off as far less sympathetic by selfishly not granting the Genie his freedom, instead of feeling forced to do so because of his anxiety about assuming the role of Sultan.
reply

I love the animated version better the only live remakes I like was Cinderella. Alice and Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, and Maleficent. Aladdin was ok. My sister saw the live action version of The Little Mermaid and it was a disappointment. She said the actress playing Ariel acted like a 5 year old and couldnt act. She said she had high expectations but was sorely disappointed in it.
reply

Hmmm. Half of these are truly horrible changes, in my opinion, inserting a woke perspective into classic films from different eras. Nothing about the Mulan remake is a good choice, in my opinion. Neither in Beauty and the Beast. They are all shadows of the originals, sucking out all the life out of the animated versions. But I guess that's a matter of taste - or political views.
reply

I feel most of the remakes do a decent job of being their own movie while using the original as a template. The thing I liked most in the Jungle Book remake was Mogli knowing where he stood in the food chain. He knew he had no chance against the tiger. In the original he was acting unafraid as if he was stronger then the tiger even willing to arrogantly fight with just a stick.
reply

My personal favourite change made in the entirety of all live-action remakes is LeFou in Beauty and the Beast. That one line added to The Mob Song, There's a beast running wild, there's no question, but I fear that the wrong monster's released, is personally one of the most outstanding additions to any of the movies. P. S. Disney should stop doing remakes.
reply

don't really find the little mermaid the worst of that case(sleeping beauty/snow whites the worst with it and would rather disney go back to 2d as outside aurora i find the animated heroines much stronger especially cinderella/mulan ) but like with eric being a sailing prince they gave him the same love of exploring giving a cute dynamic with him & ariel.
reply

ABSOLUTELY love the jungle book live action as they did so much with the wolves especially protecting mowgli like a family(felt like the lion king at points which i'd be for seeing simba befriend mowgli. :3) as i loved they added elements from the original books especially mowgli staying in the jungle as he didn't immediately stay at the village.
reply

Many of these updates definitely add more depth to characters and the story itself.
Side note, I'm kind of pleased notiving that the live action Lion King is no where on this list. That was the worse one ever with basically nothing added. But I do love the brief nod to 101 Dalmatians. Many forget that one was one of the first adaptations done.

reply

Ngl I slightly disagree with the last one, especially with what they're doing with the Snow White remake. They're making it sound like it's bad for women to be in love and that we have to be independent. Being in love and having a partner isn't bad and I personally feel that shouldn't be taken away from the stories we grew up with.
reply

My favorite changes are Eric, The Beast and Jasmines song. I loved growing up with Disney but I wondered to myself if characters got their own song and I loved it.
Prince Eric singing about the waters is like music to my ears, The Beasts song about love makes my heart melt and Jasmines song leaves me speechless

reply

I love what they did to all villain. i mean they are more reasonable. I mean just because u are not invited of a birthday party u curse a child, just like maleficent. Instead she have a tragic back story. Or what is the connection of shere khan in jungle book. What is the motivation of lady tremine & many more.

reply

I'd just like to share another change I really liked in the live action Little Mermaid. I loved that they dived into Ursula's backstory more than in the original. She is indeed Triton's sister: 0 I don't remember much else [but I think she really was cursed to look the way she does]
reply

Dont get me wrong, I love Eric from the remake.
But, people are way too harsh towards Eric from the original.
It clearly shows that he has a huge love of exploring the sea and is an awfully sweet guy.
What more does anyone want despite the fact that his parents are gone?

reply

The 101 Dalmatians one was written by someone who has never seen the cartoon apparently. They talk about getting a Dalmatian Plantation and literally sing a song about it. Roger's success with his Cruella song gives them the money to buy a new place and take care of all the dogs.
