The theme of this Top 10: emotionally resonant videos that leave a huge mark. My Honorable Mention recommendation is Untitled by Simple Plan.
I grew up when the consequences of drinking and driving was at the forefront of conversations in school and within families.
The video features a teenage girl driving alone - singing and smiling - when she is hit by a drunk driver. The video also has break-in clips of her family doing normal things: Mom is washing dishes and brother is playing video games. At the moment she is hit by the drunk driver, each of her family members is ripped into different directions - her father even flies through the window.
It is meant to reflect that when a loved one is hurt (or killed) in a car accident, the whole family's normal is impacted and they are never the same again.
I cannot watch that video without crying and it has stayed with me since watching it for the first time.

Peter Gabriel has two great haunting videos that come to mind. One is for his song, Father Son, which as you can imagine from the title, is a song about him and his father, and the video for it has beautiful home footage of the two of them together. The second video is for his song Don't Give Up, where he and his duet partner, Kate Bush, hug each other throughout the whole video due to that song's themes about not giving up in desperate times.

Johnny Cash Hurt is the one. Trent Razner wrote that as a struggling young man. Johnny sang that as a man at the end of his life. They are two different views but the same lyrics. Both hit different. But hands down, Johnny Cash Hurt is the greatest cover song ever. Mazzy Star Into Dust could be on this list, but I don't think they ever made a video for it. If they have, I couldn't find it

what about show me the meaning of being lonely by the backstreet boys, the one that got away by katy perry, confessions of a broken heart by linday lohan, when you're gone by avril lavigne, you raise me up by westlife, lucky by Britney, oh father by madonna, what i've done & breaking the habit by linkin park, cool by gwen stefani, ghost of you by my chemical romance?

Excellent list of haunting music - in a good way. I adore Coldplay - The Scientist. Johnny Cashs cover of Hurt was so intensely beautiful that Trent Reznor said He (Cash) OWNS that song.
Bowies Lazarus is almost too painful for me to watch because he is one of two of my all time musical acts of all time

A schoolmate of mine died on her way to school on morning. A lot of tears were shedding that day, including some of my friends. I played Happier on my phone for them before one of our classes. She felt a bit better after that. She still grieved but was less broken about it, in a good way.

I always thought the video David Fincher directed for Madonnas Oh, Father is pretty haunting and beautiful in a quiet cinematic way. David Fincher was emerging as a music video force before he hit big in feature films and his early collabs with Madonna showed his strong innovative style.

These are the Days of Our Lives by Queen. It also pulls at your heartstrings because in Life of My Life Freddie sings, When I grow older, I will be there at your side, to remind you that I still love you, and the final line he sings is, I still love you.

Good list, but I can think of a few more:
Luca by Suzanne Vega
Jeremy by Pearl Jam
Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon
Burning House by Cam (more for lyrics than visuals.

Monsters by James blunt is a killer to watch but hurt by cash is just a powerful song and the video is beautiful and painful at the same time it's a masterpiece that no one will ever top
reply

Such a well deserved number 1 song! His voice sounds so haunting and you can just hear and feel all of his emotions. The original is amazing but Johnny Cash took it to a whole new level!
reply

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt was even better than the original version, in my opinion. He died not long after recording and filming, introducing him to a whole new generation.

Archive - AXIOM (Music and short movie)
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (Music and short movie)
Stephanie Rainey - Please Don't Go (You can't hold tear from the video)

oh baby by LCD Soundsystem has a music video that is far better acted than most films and has an emotional gut punch at the end that will always bring me to tears.

Show Me the Meaning Of Being Lonely by Backstreet Boys
Music video shows grief and loss. If you know the story behind each scene its even more depressing

The most beautiful video ever made in terms of visual art is Fleetwood Mac's Gypsy. It combines Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It is simply stunning artistically.
reply

Nope, I'll give you Blink, but the rest aren't good at all. Nine Inch Nails did it better and Green Day and Evanescence would've been better fit on the list.
reply

Happier? Seriously? I swear someone can put a dying dog into anything and no matter how truly sad it is, a bunch of people will start wailing like simps
reply

How is Rascal Flatt's What Hurts The Most not on this list?
It is an incredible video depicting the lyrics and the story in such a compelling way

reply

Mine is Delains We are the Others. The way Charlotte Wessels turns an individual tragedy into a universal acceptance hymn is highlyv addictive.

Little Motel by Modest Mouse never fails to make me cry. The lyrics and music video are so chilling, especially as a parent now
reply

I Would've put in the honorable mentions Sleep In The Heat By PUP and In The Main List Cigarettes & Saints By The Wonder Years.
reply

Fun fact: in the music video of the scientist, Chris had to sing the song in reverse for having the right lipsync.
reply

Promise Me by Badflower is probably one of the best music videos I've ever seen. Such an underrated band, imo.

Radiohead - Street Spirit
Interpol - Lights
Pink Floyd - High Hopes
Rammstein - Zeit
spring to mind

I was really hoping that Birds by Imagine Dragons would be on this list. The music video makes me cry.

Too bad you didn't include Queen's who wants to live forever or No one but you (only the good die young.
reply

I disagree with some of them being on there because there's a lot more better songs in there than that.
