You are soooo wrong. Did you make this list just to piss people off? Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark based on a 13th century story by Saxo Grammaticus and Hamlet is a Viking. The only film adaptation even close was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starred Mel Gibson and Helena Bonham Carter. The Merchant of Venice in your Honorable Mention Category was brilliant and deserves recognition in the top 10 as does The Taming of the Shrew starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. In addition how could you leave out the 2006 As you like it I grant that moving it to Japan was a mistake but Branagh's direction and the performances and settings were exquisite. Kevin Kline's performance for me was the best. Personally, My choice for number one is the one you had at number 8. Much ado about Nothing with Branagh, Thompson, Denzel, Keaton, Keanu and House's Wilson( Robert Sean Leonard) with Kate Beckinsale as Hero? That move was AWESOME!

I somehow missed the 1999 Midsummer Night's Dream and the 1971 MacBeth. Would love to watch both if I can find them.
This list is five years old. I wonder if this group turned to the subject again if the results would change. I loved the most recent MacBeth with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. As someone pointed out, that Denzel and Frances are older supports the story. I imagined them as a couple on the fringes of power for many years, finally grabbing their opportunity only to be destroyed.

Some of these make sense, but I totally disagree with both Branagh films. His Henry V rivals Olivier's, but his Hamlet is long, hammy and horrible. A waste of a huge cast and budget. Kline is a legend but not great in this MSN. Bottom requires much less than the leading man to work. I'll post a list soon.
Chimes at Midnight is leaps and bounds the greatest use of Shakespeare on film.

feel like they did Lion King dirty here by not mentioning it during the Hamlet section, which it was based on. Plus even though it's not directly based on it, Titanic should've gotten a special mention because it's love story is strikingly similar to Romeo and Juliet, Leo even starred in Romeo and Juliet

A play or Film should never be set in a time period that occurred after the death of the author. Adaptations that are new creations based on the original are different. West Side story and 10 things I hate about you', for example, even She's the man are excellent.

I think Merchant of Venice and anything from The Hollow Crown should have made the list. Laurence O is good for a single film, but to be regarded more is rubbish.
Also, love that you kept Much Ado. That one is EXCEPTIONAL. I love it light years more that R+J

I actually really enjoyed the 1996 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. When I read shakespeare I hardly ever imagine the characters serious, they're over the top and I felt like that film adaptation gave us that. It was dramatic and wonderful with incredible acting

I respect Anthony Hopkins but this version of Titus is such a trash. It should not be in that list at all. One of the worst adaptations. And 68's Romeo and Juliet should be on the first place, in my opinion. And there is should be USSR's version of Hamlet

If you haven't watched the Bollywood adaptations Maqbool (Macbeth, Omkara (Othello) and Haider (Hamlet, you are really missing out very good cinemas. Maqbool and Haider has Irfan Khan and Shahid Kapoor at their best respectively.

I would have put the Whiting-Hussey R&J higher. Titus Andronicus is a type of blood pay popular with Elizabethan audiences of the day. (Think Friday the 13th) Orson Wells's Macbeth is an over-the-top kitsch riot.

I really liked Hamlet 1996!
Plus Isnt it ironic that both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet worked in a Shakespeares play movies in the same year? Leo in Romeo + Juliet & Kate in Hamlet.

Old Romeo and juliet is way better. Di Caprio version could be awesome but they went over the top with costumes and made it too look like a joke.

Imagine Kate and Leo appeared on different William Shakespeare stories at the same year before they made Titanic. They're so connected.
