So, Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch can be in the Avengers - but Wolverine can't? Today on Issue At Hand, Susana dives deep into the world of film licensing! (Spoiler alert: it's HELLA complicated)

I'm now something of a regular comics reader, but when I first wanted to get started, the store was super complicated. Thousands of back issues sitting in rows, larger volumes organized by hero or heroine and by publisher, and some kind of understood knowledge that the back row was the New Stuff.
Then what do I get? Will Captain America #14 make sense to me? How do I catch up? Why are there 5 different Batmans? How do I know when the next issue of a thing I like is coming?
This is all stuff I figured out once I felt comfortable asking the folks at the store and spent time coming back over time. And I'm sure you're familiar with this problem, but boy oh boy are those some barriers to getting into comics. Obviously digital can be easier, but I wanted to help my local place?

Thank you, Susana! These videos are so fun and informative! As for things I would like to know more about - your video explaining the DC multiverse was great, and we've learned more about some of the other reboots, but I'm still pretty confused about some of it. Also you talked about Marvel (and how everything is canon) but I know there are some big events there that I don't really understand - I think one called M day? idk. In any case keep up the great work and thank you! I hope E3 and all the rest go well for you: ) (time to talk about Black Panther soon)

You are doing such good work!
I'm very much looking forward to next season (which starts soon.
Possible topics:
Comic book distribution.
How to prep for comic cons (large and small.
Death (and re-birth) in comics (or, why there's really no such things as a meaningful death in super-hero comics.
Alan Moore.
The importance of Watchmen (and how it impacts DC Rebirth.

a barrier for me and reading comics is that i always feel like im playing catch up. i tend to find a new comic or new character that i fall in love with only to find out that the comic is on issue 50 0r 100 and i get kind of discouraged and overwhelmed and won't read or end up waiting for the collections and falling even further behind in the story.

Who owns the rights to the characters in the Marvel Netflix series? Daredevil, Jessica Jones, etc. - they seem to reference that they take place in the same world as the events of the The Avengers Assemble movie, but without ever actually saying that, or mentioning the events of any of the other Marvel movies, so I was confused.

I thought the title of the video would be more fitting if you talked more about Iron Man having continued interest in the boy after civil war and their previous connections in the comics. I felt you barely touched upon the question. There's tons of videos about the rights and whatnot we know it's a shared universe.

I'm not a huge comic fan, but Issue at Hand is definitely one of Polygon's most underappreciated titles. When it's on something that interests me (the history of comics, superhero movies, etc, it's honestly quite informative and captivating. Here's looking forward to season 2!

Question for potential future episode: I've always been hesitant to jump into various comic franchises because of a fear that I have simply missed too much. Is this dumb? Could you tackle the relevance / irrelevance of diving into a franchise from its beginning?

I've heard that, as a result of this licensing quagmire, several Marvel characters have gotten comics origins where they're Totally Not A Mutant, Guys. I know Squirrel Girl did this, at least somewhat in jest. I'd have loved to see more on this as well!

Glad to see this discussed. I love the Marvel comics, but the movies and TV series are becoming less appealing to me. Would love to see a more detailed discussion of the Inhumans due it's increasing popularity in the comics and the new series coming this fall.

Polygon! These videos are so good. I would love to see an issue at hand on slice of life comics, like the simpsons and Archie and the new Hannah Barbra comics! I don't know anything about them but always look at them when I'm at madness comics

It sounds like Spider-man: Homecoming served basically the same purpose as the Roger Corman Fantastic Four, existing as a sort of copyright anchor unless or until the IP holders can do something -real- with the property.

I'd love to see Susana and the guy who does Comics Explained do a show/podcast together. Making the convoluted universes of comics palatable is a rare skill, and I think they'd make quite the dynamic duo.

my dad bought into the comic collectable craze in the 80's and we have a lot of shitty batman toys. I'd love to see a video related to comic book merchandise if you can find an interesting hook

thanks for this video susana! issue at hand is always so informative, and as an outsider to the whole superhero genre and universe, it helps to shed a lot of light on the oddities of them.

I wanna know how you relate abstract personifications like Eternity and Galactus to possibly telling a story with any kind of narrative cohesion (haha narrative cohesion in a comic book)

He's in the movie because they suck and can't make a good Marvel movie without always adding a freaking Avengers character. The Tobey Maguire franchise can never be beat.
reply

It's a good thing nobody asked these questions during essentially every silver age Marvel release, because all the heroes were in other heroes' comics all the time.

How does comic book publishing work in the industry? I'm familiar with indie works and self publishing deals but not bigger places like marvel, DC, image or Dark horse.
reply

Love these videos as someone who doesn't really know anything about the superhero universe but appreciates it. Keep up the wonderful work y'all!

Topic for future video, how to help your friends get into comics. I've tried, but bringing them to a comic book store is way too intimidating.
reply

Aww, I'm going to miss this show while it's on break. It's one of my favourite Polygon series.
Keep up the great work!

I love this series so much! I don't know much about comics but it's cool to see it compared to the big screen versions

Is Amalgam on the table for discussion at some point? As well as the Marvel vs DC campaign going into it?

-Have a great summer- is good, all your sign-offs should be in the -yearbook signature message- genre.
