two things. one, this is really interesting, Simone! I remember shit like this from the early 90s; hearing the news reports actually gave me, like, flashbacks to the sheer amount of VIDEO GAMES ARE VIOLENT AND WILL HURT YOUR KIDS that used to go down when I was a kid. Which I mean isn't a great memory, but it's interesting! And two; I had forgotten about petz for roughly twenty YEARS omg, that is a weird-ass blast from the past that I didn't even realize I remembered. Thanks.

Petz could cause serious emotional distress and have disturbing images, if you worked at it. Remember how you could edit animals with different software? Like, make them taller, different colors, stuff like that? I took the opportunity, at age 7, to make ghoulish nightmare hounds that looked like black holes cut out of the world with legs longer than a grown man. Ahh, childhood memories.

petz will never fade from my memory. the fact that there's still a fanbase for at least 3/4/5 decades later is pretty wild. you have to do some seriously bizarre internet archaeology with wayback machines to try and get specific breedz files nowadays (unless one of the few still active people managed to save and reupload something you want elsewhere)

Great video! I've always loved how campy Night Trap is in comparison to how it horrified politicians so much that it helped bring in age ratings on games.
Also I almost didn't recognise Simone's voice because it wasn't screaming or madly laughing. I think I watch too much Awful Squad.

Great video! I had no idea the new Petz games were related to the old desktop ones!
I remember watching a news story as a kid in the 80s asking if Zelda II was too violent. And an article in I think Nintendo Power calling Contra the most violent game ever made. Simpler times.

I remember playing petz. It was basically the first computer game I ever played. I forgot about it's existence until right now. It was cute and cuddly, but I'm pretty sure you could like. hit and throw the animals with your mouse.

Please make more videos like these! I would love to see more history or cause to effect video reports like this! Maybe even have rotating commentators! All members of Polygon's video crew have excellent listenable voices!

There's more to the story than this - Petz's interface was inspired by Night Trap too. Its interactivity and room-switching GUI both came from Night Trap. It's basically Night Trap, but adorable.

HA! I'd like to see the faces of all those people who denounced Night Trap now. Y'know, with games like Until Dawn and Outlast who are much, much more violent.

I love this sort of (for lack of a better word) historical/educational thing. I wouldn't mind more videos in this vein that are between 5 and 10 minutes long. : )

really liked this video, it makes me wonder if they found a kid who was actually emotionally scarred from night trap or if they were just talking big game

Late to the party, but I would also love to see more of these short, documentary-type videos, especially if they also come with a companion article!

This is really good.
More mini docs and video essays, please. It's a great format and this is a well produced little nugget of the form.

Seeing footage of Petz awoke some weird forgotten memories. I totally played that on my Grandpa's computer when I was like 5 years old.
