MAKING GAMES in GameMaker Studio 2 with Griffin and Pat
video description
I really enjoy when people in the games media learn about game development because its such a fun and challenging art, and as Griffin said. being able to realize all these game ideas that you inevitably end up with when you work with or play games a lot is massively satisfying.
FWIW I am highly impressed that in his first non-tutorial project Griffin was able to build a number of fairly complex game mechanics and put it together into a working prototype in 40 hours. That says a lot about his ingenuity, and about the power of GameMaker Studio as a platform. Theres no reason to discount it because its not as complex as some AAA 3D game. the right tool for the job is always going to be the way to go.
I really hope that Griffin continues to work on building games, and would love to see this become a recurring feature from Polygon. Maybe something where Pat or other video staff suggest a feature to add and Griffin works on it and then explains how he did it?\r\n

god. it's been a stressful few months, I could download that shit, hyperfixate, completely flake on all my responsibilities and make GAMES. what an idea. what a world we live in, where going and creating neat video games for the next month while doing literally nothing else is a thing that is easily accessible.
my own delight aside, that looks like an AWESOME game. I like the. whatever that gem game is called, and combining it with the RPG stuff? that's really neat. also pat, please, please get on that wrasslin 2D game. do it for us.
also you're right -- although I do have like, minimal experience with the if/then sort of thing, like, it looks really easy. this is cool.
definitely can't download it though, free or not. no no no. nope.

I have tried to watch this video four times now, and each time I have fallen asleep. I do not know why this is, as the topic is very interesting to me and I do enjoy both pat and griffin. Whatever it may be, I would like to thank polygon dot com for making the most powerful, non medical sediditive I-ve ever come across.

I write software for a living and it-s really fun to watch somebody discover the magic of making a thing they imagined real, and then poking it to see what happens.
Doing something and then poking it in various ways to see what changes is a big part of programming in real life, too. :)

I'm really impressed, your puzzle RPG is far more ambitious than what I'd recommend for someone's second-ever game! And yeah, GMS is a pretty good tool for dipping your toe into game dev, and it looks like they've improved it a lot since I last used it.

Everytime I watch videoes and they start talking about coding I get really happy and try to remember what all the rules were from when I took ap computer science. I was never good at coding, but I still love it

Holy shit, Gemstone Heroes actually looks better than 80% of mobile games. If Griffin really polishes it (or atleast gets rid of all the copyright infringing stuff) he could probably sell it.

My dad has been pushing me to learn about coding since I was maybe 10, but it had never really clicked with me until this moment. Griffin is honestly the driving force of my life lmao

Shaun Spalding made this game a year ago as a tutorial series to help people learn GM. Did you guys collaborate with him, learn it from the same source or use his tutorial?

God I wish Griffin and I were friends. We have so much in common. I spent weeks building mechanics and levels in the LittleBigPlanet 2 editor.

The wild thing about this is how many concepts are actually recognizable and understandable for me. That's actually a pretty cool feeling.

Holy crap, that's an actual game. Not just a tutorial demo or an experiment with the software, but an actual playable game. Kudos.
