These details are fascinating. When the story was going around r/AssassinsCreed is was that Ubisoft made Norte Dame by making an accurate selekton, changing it for gameplay purposes, and then texturing it. The thing Ubisoft was donating to the restoration project wasn't the in-game model, but the basic model they have in the archives. But it seems like there have been academic projects that did that more accurately first. Still, it was super interesting to learn the changes Norte Dame underwent for its gamification. I only knew the removal of the Chantery and the presence of parkour related objects.
Also everyone should give Unity another chance. It's been patched magnificently. It was my first AC game and I had no idea about its reputation. I found none of the much ridiculed bugs when I played. The story DLC is also free as compensation for the base game being broken at first

This video leaves out such a major point in why the AC unity model can't be used to restore the cathedral. All the stuff in this video about the missing red door, altered glass and statues, etc. make for an interesting video on architecture, copyright and game design but are entirely irrelevant to the restoration of the real life cathedral because those aren't the bits being restored. A big reason why the Unity model isn't particularly helpful for the real world restoration is because of the fact that the wooden inner structure of the roof, the rebuilding of which makes up such a huge part of the restoration, isn't an accessible area in the game and wasn't modeled in Unity in the first place. Kinda weird that it wasn't mentioned at all in the video

If you are interested in the philosophy behind restoration, consider the Ise Jingu. It's the holiest Shinto shrine in Japan. The shrine, actually a series of related shrines, has been there for over a thousand years at least. But. they knock it down and rebuild it every 20 years. As a symbol of the cycle of death and birth, they tear down and rebuild several of the main shrines in generational increments. As far as we know, they've been using the same plans each time but it's been a thousand years. It's easy to imagine that things have evolved over time. The main two shrines were recently rebuilt in 2013. So. are they modern or ancient?

there's one major flaw with this entire video, Noone claimed they would use the ingame assets to help the reconstruction, these are obviously heavily edited as mentioned in the ill informed video.
the implication was that they would provide the terabytes of point cloud data they gathered from scans performed over several months that accurately represent the cathedral to the nearest millimetre. As you mentioned the cathedral has been scanned already, and ubisoft did their own scans which have been offered to help fill any gaps or missing data since scanning techniques differ.

the thing i'm wondering about is that while the GAME version of the cathedral might be inaccurate the people working on creating the models and elements for it must have done a ton of research, made scans and reference photos that will accurately depict it in a raw version that is not game ready from a legal and poly count standpoint. i'd be surprised if they didn't have a pretty good replica or would be able to do one from their reference data which is the actually interesting dataset.

The assassin's Creed series is such a sad story to me, the first two were among my favorite games of that period. A large part of what I loved was the historical settings, and atmosphere that appears to still be what the games get right. Everything they've stacked on top of it since then has basically ruined my ability to enjoy the series. Not everything works as a service, and an atmospheric sandbox might be the least compatible thing I can imagine.

Yes I agree, it would certainly suck to go up and down and up and down and have the shitty controls launch you all the way to the ground only to have to climb back up because it is still somehow faster to do so but have to struggle to get back up because of the aforementioned controls made of SHIT. I would hate for anyone to have to go through that totally unrealistic scenario.

I think Mr. Violett-Le-Duc was onto something with the rain gutters, and I think you are with the sprinklers, too lol. Our modern improvement to the cathedral can be better firefighting, cause it might've stood for 700ish years, but who knows. maybe it would've stood for just one more, if it could put out fires.

Really wished they went for a freen or glass modern roof! I love the combination of old and new architecture! That would've added to the monument's history, made it unique! Instead of erasing it in a vain hope to return to its previous state. God I hate conservatism.

Fun Fact: For reasons similar reasons to the copyright on Notre Dame preventing completely accurate reproduction, the Eiffel Tower is still technically under copyright; but only with the lights on, as they were installed at a later date.

This is a great tech insight but I feel it skips out on a huge point. They wouldn-t use the models from the game, they would use the enormous amount of source material, the same sort of stuff the scans mentioned later in the video.

-Why Assassin-s Creed Unity can-t rebuild Notre Dame cathedral-
-Well, to answer that question we should realize that videogames are in fact, not human, thus cannot make executive construction decisisons. -

AC: U's Notre Dame was overall pretty accurate. I just wish it had been depicted with feathers, as shown in the fossil record, rather than the outdated scaly, lizard-like Notre Dames we see in Hollywood movies

No no, finish the reason why the french revolutionaries beheaded the Biblical kings. It's cause those boobs thought they were Kings of France and they had more Guillotine than heads they wanted to chop off.

Well; it-s a religious building so let the money grubbing cult that owns it pay for it. The cult doesn-t pay taxes, so screw them for thinking taxpayer money should be wasted on it.

Architecture is one of two artforms that are based exclusively on how people interact with spaces. The other one is video games.
This video is like a thematic match made in. Paris.

AC Unity is one of the best looking games ever. A lot of it's jankieness at release has since been fixed and I would say it's worth picking up to experience its beauty.

Great video! Reminded me a little of the restoration work they completed on Notre Dame de Chartres a few years back, which was not without its controversies.

Of all the videos, this one was the easiest for the -guess which member of the video team made this based on the title and thumbnail- game. By a long shot.

Fascinating how game design has to compromise on the accuracy of architecture as complex as this and still manages to capture the essence so recognisably

So, uh. if I am a mechanical engineer who reads lots and lots of history, what do I go to grad school for to get a job doing stuff like this?

I believe Durham Cathedral was voted the greatest Cathedral in the world back in the 1980-s. Notre Dame is nice and a one in Barca
