Video game explosions are actually a lie

Video game explosions are actually a lie

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Pat dives deep into the world of particle effects, examining how they're used to create elaborate illusions and help tell stories Gotta say, I dont actually like the way this video depicts entertainment as a lie. It kind of minimizes the evil of a real lie, like the lies that get us into wars in the middle east. Those lies are worse then murdering a man, but they arent treated as such, partly because videos like this one make people feel like lies are not evil, which they are. Theyre an attack on the person who hears them. Particle effects arent lies, theyre replicas, like a plastic sword used in sparring. They dont use real explosions because they cant and because a real explosion would kill you.\r\n

Feedback to the Polygon team: instead of a negative connotative title like -it's a lie- it'll be more better sounding to put a positive spin on it, eg. -How video game explosions are made to come alive on screen- etc. The video content (including multiple interviews) was good, but the title is a bit of a turn off. Just saying.

Great video. Now I'm wondering what happens in multiplayer particle physics. If someone throws a grenade in Call of Duty and everyone stares at it, would they see the same image being rotated to look flat from the individual's perspective? Wouldn't that be more computationally intense than just rendering the explosion itself?
reply

Control uses your environment to create the explosion effect, so it-s kinda not a lie
I said kinda because it's pretty much behave like screen space reflection; it relays only on what is shown on your screen
make the explosion go half out and back in screen and you will notice a sharp cut has been made into the effect

Yeah I noticed this alot, especially in Ubisoft games. But in games like GTA 4 would have what looked like volumetric explosions. I can't confirm that but it's something I wish more games did, have more volumetric smoke and fire in these explosions.
I thought this generation was supposed to be good for that

Would really feel better about this video if it weren't sponsored content breaking down practically out-of-date effects. I mean, his descriptions could use work too. Sounds like he's describing Doom decal effects, not a modern game's volumetric shading, physics, and all around technically masterful effects work.

since they're illutions people should try to find ways of making them not as heavy as they are
explosions in games are almost always very heavy and can make things slow dow
explosions are very poorly optimized in most games for some reason
there should be a way of making it not as heavy

Great video, but calling the explosions an illusion raises an interesting question: isn't the whole game an illusion? It's all an elaborate trick to convince you that flashing dots in your metal box are actually a contiguous image. So are the explosions in particular any more of a lie?

Most old games in the 1990s used sprites instead of particle effects but games that used the quake and build engines from 1996 and onwards did have particle effects even though the build engine didn-t have fully 3D models used like how the quake engine did

Mad max had awesome scenes and the integrated foto thingy was useful too. I made screens for every chapter of gameplay and the graphics helpe alot to overcome the quite typical game design. A good game 10/10 would eat maggots and drink sweat again.

I wonder if in 10 or 30 years there will be a particle effects renaissance, where after decades of fully 3d live rendered fluid simulations in games, some indie game devs are like, let's use particle's effects like those old games.
reply

This reminds me of how enemies and many solid objects in the Doom era were just 2D sprites always facing the camera.
Imagine particle effects evolving in the same way. Real particles.

I've been literally thinking about particles for the first time in my life (and about whether explosions are 2D effects, or actually 3D) This video gets suggested, and I feel creeped out.

Drink everytime polygon shows scenes from control in their vids -
love that game and this crew! It was interesting to see the development of how the explosions happen over time

Polygon, trying their hardest to produce engaging content that doesn't rely on fake social justice outrage: -HeY yOu GuYs, dId YoU KnOW tHaT ViDeO gAmE eXpLoSiOns ArEn't ReAl? -
reply

Literally the point of this title is -did you know when you make something explode in a game it doesn-t actually detonate a bomb in your home? Crazy right? -
reply

Actually, everything in a video game is a lie.
I'm a VFX artist myself and you wouldn't believe how much of what you see are complete hacks.

Pretty interesting video.
If you liked this, decino's video on Quake 2's particle effects delves into the science of them as well

reply

If particle explosions are a lie then video games as a whole are a lie. Isn't that the point? Experiencing a world that doesn't exist.
reply

I have always known this. lol
Source: played games since a time when particle effects were shit and it was obvious what they were.

Before I watch the video. its all rendered in one dimension (just for the viewer) to save time but also processing power and frames
reply

How does this work in MMO's or games where there will be multiple angles of the same event seen from different players?
reply

Animation(or video) is a lie, is just a series of images put one after the other at just the right speed to simulate motion.
reply

everything is a lie one way or another in video games but the various ways things are faked is very interesting.
reply

Hey Polygon, Thank you for the video. Did you guy finish from the laptop. I actually like it and want to take it. -
reply

I thought that he was gonna talk about how the explosions in games don't make sense in real life. Lol.
