I hate dogs (in Elden Ring)

Elden Ring's dogs are some of the most annoying enemies for me to wrap my head around in a fight. Even hundreds of hours into the game, one tiny mistake in a fight against a dog threatens to send me spiraling into despair and lost runes. I wanted to figure out what it was about FromSoft's dog-type enemies that made them so obnoxious to fight. So I put away my weapons and put up my fists to every dog in the Lands Between - including the Monstrous Dogs and the Red Wolf of Radagon - until I figured out why dogs are a pain in my butt

Some other tips!
Small dogs get flinched by everything I've tried against them, dual thrusting swords (or even one in your off hand) are fast and have enough range to effectively stunlock them, backsteps are always useful against them, takes you out of their range and a light attack consistently lets you get a hit back with less risk
Against multiple, I like using ashes of war like double slash, spells like scouring black flame and melee like dual scythe and halberds, as all have wide sweeping attacks in front of you
Against doggosaurus rex and angry crows, try to roll into their attacks because they don't have much that can hit under them, run to the sides of the bulldoze and flying stomp attacks, rolling when they get close and it should put you beside or behind them, allowing for a quick poke with a thrusting sword (or shot from the frozen needle rapier if you charge and tap backstep)
Against multiple rexes and crows, just run and pray
As for red wolf, try to bait out the orange/red curved sword and land heavy jumping attacks, or you can use a slow spell like a moon or the flame of the fell god after they do the magic knife summon attack, because they do tend to charge in right after putting down those signs

Fun fact, and Zullie The Witch did a video on this, at least some of the dogs in the game hit a lot harder than they should because they're actually bugged.
Basically when hit boxes collide it counts as a hit, damage is dealt, and there's a code that counts that stops then waits for the next box collision.
The bugged dogs are missing that -stop after box collision- part and counts every frame that the hit boxes are collided in as a new hit, which cranks up the damage output.

The dogs attack with this Jeet Kun Doesq broken rhythm. Since timing is their main advantage You best options to fight them tend to include spacing and speed. Quick attacks, executed as they attack, can stun lock them mid attack, preventing them from landing a hit on you and making it easier to land a hit on them. Long range attacks should be pretty self explanatory but it is important to fully dodge beyond where you know they can still hit you, before you even attempt to swing.

Dogs in Elden Ring are really scary, especially in some of the areas where they get additional status effects like Bleed or Rot, since that becomes another point of anxiety: -Oh no, I got hit again, and I'm close to getting a bleed proc! -. Good enemies!
Imps also fall in that category, but I find them a bit more frustrating because they blend too well into their natural environments for my eyes.

Is this a popular opinion? I personally can read the dogs better than most enemies, and dealt with the Red Wolf of Radagon what felt like very quickly by my standards (which is to say I mostly suck at this game and it took me just a few tries. Does it say something about you as an Elden Ring player which enemy types give you the most/least trouble?
reply

A lot of weapon types (anything with -great- in its name alongside scythes and a few others I think) Have hyperarmor when 2-handed so you can trade with one of these things and get an easy kill without thinking too much. Heavy attacks or especially charged heavy attacks or weapon arts with poise are especially helpful here.

I also read that they have the largest sidestep by angle in the game in a physically impossible way. When they dodge sideways, they can fly over 90 in an arc around you. This both make counteracting hard, as many attacks whiff, while allowing the dogs to remain very close to maintain a constant barrage of attacks.

I hate dogs. Period. I can see that there are use-cases in resuce, police and civil duty applications, but overall they are unpredictable, including the -tame- ones. I hate the fact that some dog owners just brush concerns with -he's a good boy- aside. I got bitten, I will never trust a dog again.

there's something about FromSoft enemy design where they know the specific thing that will creep you the f out.
like the big T-rex dogs seem bad, but then they unhinge their jaw and run at you with a too-wide mouth and it freaks me out every time.

reply

Every single TRex dog is 100 times harder than Radagon's Red Wolf, I first tried that guy. Actually as a whole, the noble wolves of this games are all much easier to handle than any of the rabid dogs. you'd I'd be the other way around.
reply

to be fair dogs should dip noticeably before lunging and have very readable behaviour thats why most of the time when you see wolves attacking a bison or something they surround it and feint while the ones behind it attack
reply

You don't need a shield to block and guard counter, you can do it with any weapon you're two-handing. It won't fully negate damage, but it'll keep you from being staggered by every bite and guard counters are quite strong.
reply

The red wolf that appears near the area where you beat Ranni's quest is probably in my top three hated enemies in elden ring, after dying too many times I just ran past him, got the itens and ran away forever
reply

Using the counterattack on the dogs works pretty much every time!
just wait for the dog to attack you wile you block and then use strong attack, it will either one-shot them or stagger:

In case anyone still has trouble with these boys get the beast repellent torch, they will never attack unless you attack first, it also works with rats, basilisks, and the giant t-rex dogs
reply

I think it's so interesting that the canine AI prefers to flank, as canids in real life also prefer to attack their prey from behind to hit the flanks/belly/back legs during a chase.
reply

I-m so glad to see Simone out here echoing the lesson I-ve been forced to learn and live by the hard way in the Lands Between
Dogs are always, ALWAYS kill-on-sight.

reply

So is no one else here going to mention the Beast Repellent Torch, the one item that basically makes it to where you don't even have to fight the dogs anymore?
reply

Pls make a video about dogd/wolves in games in general. From The Witcher Wild Hunt to Bloodborne, they're always the most annoying enemy type
reply

You don't need a shield, just block them with your weapon. They do negligable poise damage, and have a long recovery after being blocked.
reply

Yes, dogs can be annoying. But, personally, I never really saw them as a menace. Probably because my first FromSoft game was Sekiro.
reply

i would consider that im pretty good at fighting dogs in souls games but its only because i always treat them as a major enemy.
reply

Matching your eyeshadow to the Red Dogs of Radagon? You don't have the right!
(I love it, it's such a great touch)

reply

Its so wild they have like a 1million subs while never actually playing any games. This is other peoples gameplay.
reply

lost me on Elden ring is a rhythm game there is a rhythm but it's missing everything else that defines that genre
reply

As far as fodder enemies go dogs are definitely rough. Royal Revenants are still the absolute worst, for my money
reply

I'm good with the normal dogs, wolves and rotting dogs - but the DinoDoggos are the absolute bane of my existence
reply

Why are all the dogs in this game hideous monstrosities, but the wolves look normal and like actual wolves
reply

The Gustav interlude had me absolutely dying. Sidenote: your look in this video was incredible Simone.
