In 2017, we finally had the chance to see the first openly gay character in a Disney movie, followed by the first storyline about a homosexual teenager on Disney Channel. It is a big step forward, but queer characters have actually been part of Disneys films since the beginning, and things changed a lot over the years. This is why we are showing you Disneys Long Complicated History with Gay Characters. It all started with Ferdinand the Bull in 1938. While this feminine character was not necessarily gay, he was clearly part of the LGBT community. Unfortunately, with the Hays Code, people that could be associated with gay stereotypes had to be portrayed as villains, like Captain Hook in Peter Pan. But we still had the chance to see a little bit of queerness as Ursula in The Little Mermaid was inspired by a drag queen. Its in Disney Channels Good Luck Charlie that we got the chance to see a lesbian couple. Disney even made sure that it was appropriate for children by contacting experts. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed with this decision and some people complained that they shouldnt show this kind of thing in a kids show. It just got worse when Disney featured a gay character in Beauty and the Beast. Stay tuned to hear more about movies and TV shows that are part of Disneys long complicated history with gay characters in films and TV shows like Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, WreckIt Ralph, Zootopia, Frozen, Good Luck Charlie, Beauty and the Beast, and Andi Mack. How would you like to see more diversity on screen? Make sure you answer in the comments section down below. We love to hear what you think!

Just because a bull or dragon in a cartoon representing liking flowers and not fighting means that they are not Conforming to the normal Masculinity of the time does NOT mean they are Gay. I'm a 36yr old Male that loves riding dirt bikes. NEVER ONCE have gotten into a fight. Loves drawing, sculpting, and claymation/ Stopmotion. Hate watching MMA, MTV, AND REALITY TV shows. LOVE TRUECRIME and HATE Hollywood as of lately. There's a difference between escapism/ Entertainment and forcefully shoving something in a film that has ZERO to do with the plot or story at hand. back in the day that was called good old propaganda, and all you have to do is watch 10 seconds of the latest Oscar's to see how far detached Hollywood has become compared to us normal people (or as Hollywood says, WhiteTrash FemiNazi's that hate women as leads in movies) which is HUH-LAYER-E-US, Considering Alien and Aliens are some of my favorite films ever and I think Sigourney Weaver would disagree that females have never been portrayed correctly until Captain Marvel and Ghostbusters 2016. Wow I went off on a tangent, sorry for writing a mini-novel just now. Hollywood just really REALLY passes me off as of lately. -2021-

I just want to see myself onscreen without being a global controversy. I'm tired. I don't want to stand out. I don't want to be hated. I want to live. Peacefully. I'm not a sinner. I'm sick of gayness being equated to perversion. Disney is far from perfect when it comes to representation, I'm not going to over-flatter them. It's hard to not hate myself when I'm told on a daily basis that people across the world hate me. I wish love and happiness to every gay person, trans person, pan person, ace person, bi person, questioning person & anyone who doesn't fit into societal norms for just being themself. We will get representation one day, hopefully in our lifetime. If not, it's for the future queer kids. I hope they won't have to be so worn down and tired as many of us have been over the years. Being gay is exhausting. Being trans so incredibly exhausting. One day, it'll be easier. I sincerely hope.

I think a lot of people in the comment section took what was said in the video the wrong way. Shes not saying that every man who is feminine is gay but shes highlighting the portrayal of characters who dont act in a heteronormative way. Its also worth pointing out how effeminate male characters are portrayed before and after the enforcement of the Hays code. After the Hays code, almost every effeminate male was a villain. Its not just Disney that have done this either. Its done to make a character seem off or abnormal, as stated in the video, while enforcing the stereotype that being LGBTQ+ is linked to being immoral. If youve only just learned about this, and youre offended by it, take that energy to the movies that portray these negative stereotypes and not at an educational video thats pointing it out.

Dude The two antelopes in Zootopia could have been brothers or cousins with the same last name. I dont understand how people take one thing and run with it.
