The real story about Disney's Dumbo you won't believe was turned in a children's movie. There are so many great films in the Disney vault, and its hard not to be excited when one of them gets a remake. But many eyebrows have been raised by the fact that Tim Burton is directing a new Dumbo movie. We loved the movie just as much child, but theres no denying that it hasnt aged well. Theres the whole crow issue, and the fact that the premise of the story is pretty dark and disturbing. Well talk about the true story of the real Jumbo, and how tragic and brief his life was in the circus. If you think about it, the whole baby elephant being separated from his mother thing is unbelievably tragic, and its sort of baffling that it ever got made into a childrens movie in the first place. Are you excited for the remake, or do you think Dumbo is best left in the past? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section, and then hit subscribe to get more videos from TheThings. The crows were based on stereotypes for sure but are the way they are betrayed as racist as this video suggests?
I would argue not! The crows were fiercely independent, virtuous, nice, helpful and intelligent. They strolled at the best of their drum unlike the slave circus animals. Had they been portrayed with negative traits then I would argue they were racist elements.
The only problematic part about the crow act was the name Jim Crow but its not because of the Jim Crow Laws but rather Jim Crow was an actual minstrels show act. At the time they must have thought the pun was acceptable (crow / Jim crow) and a reference to the ministral show rather than the much more evil laws if segregation.
Besides that I found the cows a net positive and at the time possibly even progressive by showing the only characters who were free, intelligent and independent. African Americans at the time may have even felt a sense of pride with such representations.

I feel very bad for jumbo and I hope that the live version of dumbo will show how not just elephants, but all animal in the circus are being treated with disrespected. My Parents told me when I was little that the circus owner would rip out a lions teeth and nails so they can hurt anyone is so sad. I when to the circus ones went I was five and I dont remember anything about thankfully. Ps, I never know that kids were sent to a circus if they have some kind of disorders or are not like other people. I hate circus peoples. Thank you showing me this have a good day.

I always think it's important to draw attention to culturally sanctioned cruelty. Not because it's something to condone through normalization, but because it awakens the sense of compassion for other sentient beings. Despite any differences. We all identify with some part of the Dumbo story, because it speaks to our sense of what is wrong with with cultural normalization of treating the 'other' like something less than the status quo. (This isn't the most eloquently worded, but I hope you understand my perspective.

Damn, you snowflakes are offended by EVERYTHING! How about this, stop over analyzing shit and live your life? You will be delighted to find, that there is plenty of good out there, you simply have to open your eyes and stop relying on the media to provide you a terrifying and hateful representation!

I think this is very sad. The real Jumo(nicknamed Dumbo) had a very torturous life. I think it is in bad taste to make a movie about Jumbo. They are giving false reality to the plight of elephant's today. Shame on you Disney!

You can be forgiven for not knowing what they movie would actually be like, since it turned out basically to be an animal rights movie. I won't give out spoilers here, I encourage every body to go and see for themselves.

The end of this video is retarded of course they're gonna change some things about the remake. Disney doesn't do stuff like that anymore and don't you dare even diss the original!

I appreciate how historically accurate the original Dumbo is. According to my dad even the Pink Elephants thing was a historical reference.

The thumbnail is very fake you cannot fool me. Thats actually a man with a syndrome that used to be a freak in the circus.
reply

I think dumbo portrayed a good message of cruelty to animals so that the audience would know how horrific the circus treated them
