Shit is about to get real so please bear and stick with me.
Dean confirms in an interview that Hiccup, as well as his kids, are never meant to go back for Toothless after the meeting on the boat. I can attach this quote from Dean in a reply if needed.
(Because the film was already made at that point and his comment is not backed/supported by the film, some people consider this comment as mere head canon like any other fan. However, some people give film directors/ creators word of god status and so from this position, this comment is to be taken as full canon)
That being the case, the very intricate, hand made, viking age prosthetic tail Toothless relies on to survive will inevitably fall into disrepair and fail as it requires some amount of maintenance. It has required upkeep for the entire franchise and was a core part of Toothless's character and how he and Hiccup interacted and developed as a team but also as individual characters working and growing alone and being creative/ innovative when separated.
Metal that will rust, leather that warps, biodegradable saliva/scale coating, mere canvas, and many tiny hand made moving parts all do not handle exposure and wear very well. There's also chaffing, strap adjustment, infection, and necrosis/septicemia that all become serious realistic concerns as well.
Lasting for 10 years was a ridiculous stretch but this is an animated film about dragons after all so we can give a slight pass. That grace period absolutely has an end point though.
The impending disfunction of the tail will ultimately ground Toothless, leading to his premature miserable death as he'd be crippled/ severely handicapped while out in the wild.
He'd lose his position as alpha so no other dragons would be committed nor obligated to listen to nor care for him. As a final departing and truly selfless command as the alpha, and also as a chance to redeem himself given his deplorable decisions and leadership skills in the final film, Toothless would have likely forbid any dragon from getting a human to help him as his life is not worth jeopardizing the secret of the hidden world and the lives of all of the dragons within.
The Light Fury would also eventually leave him for a viable mate after caring for him was no longer practical nor sustainable.
It would only be a matter of time before Toothless succumbs to dehydration, starvation, predation, infection, exposure etc etc
Nature is a cruel mistress and affords no creature a humane comfortable death.
Also, there are many Light Furies, just no more Night Furies (albeit a single person wiping them out is a lazy reason and extremely unrealistic, and so finding another mate/ the continuation of the Light Fury species is no problem.
Sorry this is dark but I work will domesticated and non domesticated animals for a living and know first hand how these types of situations work.
Toothless would not be a candidate for full release given his servere handicap as he would assuredly die without some degree of supervision/intervention.
Since Dean states that none of that is afforded to Toothless, his awful and undignified offscreen death is essentially and tragically confirmed.
Needless to say, this was a terrible way to handle such a significant and beloved character.
I love realism and can absolutely support the realistic and emotionally gripping premise and outcome of Toothless dying if Dean insists (unless he breaks story consistency/character integrity yet again and says the tail is suddenly magically indestructible. Plus, what a disrespectful/insensitive slap in the face to disabled people if he now chooses to competely disregard and refuses to acknowledge and accept Toothless's very real/relatable and serious handicap/disability) but good gods, not like this! This type of offscreen death is so unmeaningful and such a wasted opportunity to do something significant and beautiful with this character and the culmination of his story arc.
Even in death, Toothless deserved better.

The question I asked was why did it appear that Toothless didn't recognize Hiccup and I believe it's actually very simple Toothless never saw Hiccup with a beard last time Toothless saw Hiccup he was clean shaven and 10 years have passed but when the dragons came back on Homecoming he still never physically look at Hiccup he knew Hiccup was in that costume because of his smell he never forgot Hiccup smell so he knew Hiccup sent as for his daughter Hiccup's daughter she was still afraid of Hiccup just like if you have a young child and a friend of yours has a huge dog the kid might have seen the dog the kid might have gotten close to the dog but the kid never touched the dog so there's a difference when a little child sees a giant animal that somebody else has control of and making physical contact with that animal so when Hiccup and Astrid went to see Toothless and his mate that was her and her brother's first time to make physical contact with the dragons in the easiest way to understand the statement I'm making is to watch The Hidden World up until you get to right after Astrid and Hiccup get married ended there then watch Homecoming from the beginning same thing almost to the end and after Astrid says we should go visit them go back to the Hidden World and then watch the ending and the whole movie the two movies together will make sense of why Toothless didn't recognize Hiccup and why Astrid and Hiccups children were afraid of Topthless

I started crying when i saw that on the internet that was the end of Toothless and Hiccup but while watching this I cried even more with joy
Edit: I think that secretly Hiccup and Astrid go to the Hidden World once he passes his leadership onto someone else like all the Dragon Riders go to get their dragons and fly very far away so they find a different world! And maybe since Toothless is the only left of his kind his mate dies protecting Toothless and the babies, like Clownfish and Maybe Furies live just as long as their trainer! Or when Dragons bond with a person their cells or whatever keeps them to age changes as to their trainers age thing they die together. thatll be so amazing if that was real!

!! ! SPOILERS! ! ) It was a sad ending but the director can't make infinite movies. Atleast they made a spinoff as Dragons: The Nine Realms. As the season 2 of it's ending I have a theory of the world that was at the end of season 2 is the real entrance for the Hidden world that we saw on HTTY 3. I think that the new dragon which I think is in the family tree of Toothless or the Light fury. Also I think the main character Tom Kullersen (The main character of TNR) is in the family tree of Hiccup. Reminder this is just a theory of some people so don't take this too serious.

I love the first theory because it says the world becomes peaceful and the dragons come back and thoothless and his family comes back and stay with hiccup and stay in berk forever and Id love for them to visit each other all the time so that they wont forget each other or if they loved to the hidden world with thoothless Id love thoes endings plus after the ending where thoothless and hiccup reunite I feel like they stay together to they will always be together and will visit each other and wont forget each other

even if dragons could be scared of humans again, i doubt they'd go for the kill unless theyre holding weapons, we know that Valkas dragon didnt know her at all but sensed that shes a good person and took her to the nest of the alpha
the same for toothless, he saw that hiccup spared him, and returned same favor
plus, Toothless recognized hiccup not by how he looks, but his scent

reply

The ending was really sad.
And now there is a world without dragons in one of the last seens hiccup said that when the is volcanic activity dragons are just letting us know the are there
Let's hope one day someone finds the hidden world and the world can live in piece with them. I would love to have a night fury of my own

reply

Oh yeah, Toothless had problems recognising Hiccup after 10 whole years as his face changed a lot. Hiccup knew right away cuz Toothless is the last night fury, so if he sees one, that's definitely Toothless. But Toothless also knew the moment he got a scent. As an animal his smell sense work better than remembering a face.
reply

I had a theory that when hiccup and his mom pass on and the next generation lives because they arent exposed to dragons they begin to hate them all over trying to kill them and the dragon war rehappens until someone like hiccup befriends them and its just a loop over and over.
reply

Can you fricking focus on the screen at 5: 40 too while you rant about Light fury being the last of her specie when you can literally see a mum and a child light fury there? She's not the last light fury
