The history of practical effects in Hollywood goes way back to the early days of performing on stage, especially when it comes to makeup and character transformations. Since then, weve developed technology that allows professionals to pull off some pretty realistic prosthetics like burnt skin, evil clowns, and fakes noses. These prosthetics can completely change how someone looks or even create mythical creatures like Drax or Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy. It can be surreal to see a before and after picture of an actor when their role requires a major transformation. However, have you ever wondered what really goes into the process of transforming someone like Ryan Reynolds into Deadpool or Bill Skarsgard into Pennywise? The short answer? A lot. Including hours in the makeup chair before and after shooting and months of prepping and practice even before they get to set. While the transformations may look epic in the end, the process is gruesome, and sometimes even acting in character with prosthetics and makeup is a challenge in itself. There are some actors who describe it as trying to show emotions through pieces of gluedon plastic. Sometimes the transformations are more subtle like Margot Robbies character of Elizabeth in Mary, Queen of Scots. Nevertheless, theyre just as shocking and just as timeconsuming and really showcase the talent of the many Hollywood makeup artists and special effects professionals. Ready to find out what goes into these major Hollywood transformations? Make sure to tell us which before and after you were most shocked to see unravel in the comment section below

Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire should have been on this list, Tim Curry as The Darkness from the film Legend (or Robert Piccardo as Meg Mucklebones, also from Legend) Angelica Houston and her 5 HOUR makeup into the Grand High Witch from the film The Witches, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique in the X-Men films (Her first transformation was 7 hours) these are bigger more extreme examples of makeup changes in terms of application / removal times and visual appearance upon completion.

Sometimes these transformations are done for the purpose of adapting a non-human character to the screen, sometimes theyre done to help an A-list movie star disappear into a dramatic role, and sometimes theyre done for purely comedic effect. In any case, the success of these transformations relies on the believability of the makeup effects, as well as the ability of the actor to adapt their mannerisms and persona to completely become someone else.

Eddie Murphy has made a film career out of unrecognizable makeup, Coming to America, he broke new ground, playing four different characters. Impressive makeup and costuming effects, as well as his talent for character creating, resulted in four hilarious, diverse performances.
Murphy continued the trend with the little-seen Vampire in Brooklyn, and more famously in The Nutty Professor I and II.
