Cosmic Spider-man didn't retire he simply felt it was 'beneath' him dealing with the little things as the persona of the Uni-power began messing with his mind, hence why Venom gave up on because the symbiote could barely detect any of the original Peter's personality and became a decidedly more violent 'defender of the weak' than Peter was. Then he gave up his powers including the cosmic ones using the Doombot's device to briefly link all of humanity together through the uni-power. However his daughter fathered during that time inherited the cosmic mantle.
Left off the best part of the number one there as well, in all three universes Peter Parker had recovered the spider that empowered the Betty, Flash and John Jameson of his universe and created a serum to willingly become Spider-man. Especially good for him in the one universe as JJJ devotes himself to doing the opposite of his 616-counterpart and helping defend and support super-heroes in the memory of his son.

One of my favorite Spidey What Ifs was Spidey vs Wolverine, where Spidey remains in East Germany instead of returning home, and he eventually becomes a black ops agent with Wolverine. Kinda cool and really shows that Spider-Man never truly lived up to his potential because of his own neuroses. Deprived of this, Spidey is extraordinary.

One thing that I know is that if Spider-Man saved Gwen Stacy. We would have never had that evil scene with Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn.
